V: Villanelle
An enchantingly deadly paradise
White foam, multiple hues of blue,
Mini sand dunes of bleached ochre brown,
In the wind, microscopic sand blew.
On sunlit green leaves lies morning dew,
Ragged rocks adorn the sea like a crown,
White foam, multiple hues of blue.
By this seashore, a little girl grew,
Viewing this scenery, there'd be no frown,
In the wind, microscopic sand blew.
Sky blended into a single hue,
Sea so frighteningly fierce- one may drown,
White foam, multiple hues of blue.
Clear waters now full with the waste you threw,
Nature isn't your zoo, it isn't your clown,
In the wind, microscopic sand blew.
This is no joke, you know it's true,
It isn't long before we go down,
White foam, multiple hues of blue,
In the wind, microscopic sand blew.
▪WHAT IS A VILLANELLE?▪
The villanelle, like the other French forms, does have many of the same properties: plenty of rhyme and repetition. This French form was actually adapted from Italian folk songs (villanella) about rural life.
The villanelle consists of five tercets and a quatrain with line lengths of 8-10 syllables. The first and third lines of the first stanza become refrains that repeat throughout the poem. It looks like this:
