Chapter 9
"I'm so sorry." Hisham said for a trillionth time as Sheronica worked her power to a guy's shoulder who flinched a few times with only a touch.
"No problem. Although, I must admit, it hurt like an arse." He replied, and struggled under Sheronica's touch.
A slap landed on his chest.
"Be still. She can't do her job when you're wriggling like a worm." A girl that looked a lot like Sheronica grumbled.
Sheronica chuckled. "I'm almost done." She said, and a few seconds later she raised her palm from the wound. It was fully healed without any scratches.
"There. Good as new." Sheronica helped him to sit down.
"Thank you, Sher." He said, and she smiled cheekily.
They turned to face the others in the Living room. Apart from Farra, Aieyn, Izz, and Hisham, it was the first time she saw her friends for almost a week.
"Hello everyone." she greeted, "meet my friends.. this is Lissa, Alex, and" she pointed to the other guy who stood near the entrance. "Dylan."
"They helped me escape the Number fortress."
"Hi," the girl with shoulder length brown hair smiled. "My name is Miezza."
Lissa smiled. "Wind, isn't it?" Miezza's eyes widened, and she turned to look at Farra who simply grinned at her.
"I told you." Farra said, shrugging.
"I think I know everyone here.." Lissa tapped on her chin and pointed at a tall short haired girl. "Lily, Light."
She turned to another girl beside Lily, who was hugging herself. Her soft brown hair was wavy and set on one shoulder, her doe eyes were filled with anticipation.
"Jyra, Sand. I've met Aieyn and Hisham, who is Fire, and Arrow." She turned to Farra and smiled. "You are the Leader, so you have all of their powers."
Farra returned her smile and nodded.
"And that gorgeous guy over there," she batted her eyelashes at the blue eyed guy who stood beside Sheronica. "Is Izzudin. You have Clones, and you can read old transcripts."
Izz raised one brow and Lissa blushed furiously. "You're even hotter up close." She muttered and fake coughed simultaneously earning a chuckle from Sheronica.
"Now, where were we? Oh, Danish, Laser Eyes. Noorizan, Plants." Lissa tapped on her chin, a habit when she was thinking.
"Zulfikar." And she chuckled.
"What about me?" Zul asked, face distorted in confusion.
"Ice, and you need to work something out." Lissa said, and added the last sentence, glancing between him and Sheronica who looked oblivious.
Zul's face turned red, as his friends snickered at him. Except for Sheronica of course.
"Unbelievable." He grumbled.
"You are Lissa. I don't know what your number is, but you're a Seer." Farra voiced out. This time it was Lissa who look surprised.
"Are you a Seer too?" Lissa asked.
"No, not quite." Farra grinned. "Now let's get you settled in."
***
"So you're from the Number's huh." Jyra asked. Lissa smiled softly and nodded her head, looking out to the practise field that was busy with the guys training.
It was sunny that morning. Farra and Aieyn had gone to the practise field early, tugging along Noorizan, Danish, Hisham, and Zulfikar for a hand in hand combat. The Numbers, Dylan and Alex joined too.
They decided to show each others what they were capable of and the leaders thought it was a good idea. Since Alphabets were a clan of powers, the Numbers were the exact opposite. Alex and Dylan excelled in weaponry, and like Hisham they could make a weapon out of air. It was their speciality. Alex even showed Noorizan the almost transparent bomb he used to destroy Noorizan's wall.
The girls decided they would just hang out at the patio, watching as the guys strangle each others, which was funny. They weren't used to fighting without no powers before so they were basically beginners. Except for Noorizan who aced boxing in college.
"Can I ask something?" Jyra asked, earning a laugh from Lissa. She was so cheerful, almost like Sheronica.
"You already are."
Jyra smiled briefly, and her face returned to serious.
"What makes you decide that you want to help us? As far as I know, Alphabets and Numbers aren't buddy buddy."
"Well," Lissa tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. "Perhaps, but it doesn't mean I agree on the war that happens between our clans. It's been so long.
And I was never welcomed either." She said softly.
"Why?" Miezza butted in. "Aren't you part of them too?"
"I am." Lissa took a deep breath.
Alex once said to her, she had to let go. That she doesn't have to bear everything on her own. That's what she was going to do.
She looked at each faces, each one of them had the same expressions, they were curious. She could handle curiosity, but not pity.
"You see, I'm not the like them." She nodded at Dylan and Alex who battled each others. "Yes, I am born as a Number, but I don't have number. Does that make any sense?"
Her new friends shook their heads.
She fixed her sitting position so that she will face them. She looked at Lily, Jyra and Miezza before slowly telling them about her old life.
"Okay, I was anointed, so basically I am a Number, but unlike them," she pointed a thumb to Dylan and Alex. "I'm not exactly important."
"Them?" Lily asked, the corner of her mouth fell. She literally thought Dylan hated her. He have been giving her the stink eye since yesterday.
"They are the elites."
"Elites." Miezza echoed and Lissa nodded.
"Supposed you don't have them?" Lissa asked, and the three girls shared looks. It was Miezza who answered, since she was the first one founded by Farra and Aieyn.
"Not that I know of."
"Okay. You know number is uncountable. There are infinity of us. But only a few are important. The Elders are the first, then came the Elites. But even Elites are established by the Elders. In my place, only those numbered zero to nine are important."
She pointed to Alex who kicked Dylan's chin, sending the guy flying five feet in the air before landing on top of Noorizan who was busy dodging Hisham's attack.
"He's Five."
She moved to Dylan. "And he's Nine."
"Great. Now I have to deal with a cocky first class hero." Lily muttered under her breath.
"How about you? What is your number?" Miezza asked.
"I told you, I don't have one. I am unnumbered. But I am still a Number. I bear the crest." She pushed aside her black hair to reveal a big tattoo-like symbol on her neck.
"Ouch, that must hurt." Jyra cringed.
Lissa shrugged. "Sometimes."
"At least they are with me, so I feel a bit safe." Lissa added softly, smiling at the sight of her friends. "They are the only one who believe in me when everyone thinks I'm crazy. My father is Number Two, but after mother died, he was.. distant."
She felt a hand on her shoulder and turned to see Lily smiling at her.
"We're here for you now."
Her own lips twitched into a grin. Maybe coming there wasn't a bad idea after all.
Jyra rubbed her chin. "I have one more question."
Lissa smiled. "Shoot."
All heads turned to Jyra who kept asking questions. She was acting like a reporter.
"You are a Seer, and you specialises in seeing the future, no?" Jyra asked and Lissa nodded, yes.
"So if you are a Seer, what are they?" Jyra pointed to the Alex who fought with Dylan. "Do they specialises in something too?"
"We are not like Alphabets." Lissa shook her head and stared into the other girls eyes. "Sure I'm a Seer, but being good in one power only means you're lacking in Number clan. That's why I'm not... important. But if you must know, all of the Elites specialised in technology. They can make something with their bare hands. We call them, building magic."
"Wow, like some freak show." Miezza blurted and surprisingly Lissa nodded, agree.
"Freak, yes. Sort of. Your powers are of nature elements. Primary. But we, the Numbers manipulate those and make it something new, something.. worldly. It even existed since thousands of years ago before the human even know what technology is."
"Scary, if you ask me." Jyra muttered and Miezza glared at her.
"What, you can call them freak but I can't be scared? Come on." Jyra whined.
"They are Elites for a reason. They each need to fight with the same number as them, the old ones, as we call it. After the Anointing, the Elders will settle a number to each members, and in Elite's case, if you have that same number as someone before you, you have to challenge them into a fight and kill them in order to have that number to yourself. It's either kill, or being killed. Because there is never two of the same number."
"Brutal." Lily muttered and Miezza nodded.
"So each of them killed the number before them?" Miezza asked and Lissa nodded.
"The Elders are a bunch of intelligent and hard people, you see. They will not just assign anyone to be in the same number after you." Lissa heaved a breath. She stopped talking briefly and bit on her bottom lip.
"The last Number Five was a good man, and it was really hard for Alex to take over the title. But he had to live. The last Number Five was Alex's uncle."
"How about Number Nine?" Lily asked, she was really curious about Dylan's past. Maybe it will explain why he acted like an ass.
Lissa shot Lily a small smile. "The last Number Nine was Dylan's sister."

"You lost weight." Izz said, and Sheronica chuckled.
"I'm only away for a week, Izz." She laughed, putting meat into the sizzling pan.
Izz tsked. "That is very cheap of them. Did they feed you enough carb, protein? How can you grow up healthily if you don't eat more of those? You shrunk."
Sheronica gasped and she tossed a piece of half cooked meat to Izz who caught it expertly with his mouth.
"Goal!" He pumped his hand into the air.
"Jerk." She muttered and Izz winked at her.
"You love me anyway."
There was a brief silent, a comfortable one, as Sheronica continued to cook and Izzudin filled his mouth with peanut.
"How did you know I was coming back?" She asked, and Izz stopped munching.
"We didn't. It was Farra. She dreamt of you. Turned out she had the Vision power, that way we knew you're alive and well, and we just waited, I guess."
"Oh."
Izz watched the girl as she moved swiftly to the cabinets and pulled out a clean plate and placed the meat on top of it. After that, she moved to the pot and stirred her soup.
"We missed you. We really do." He said slowly and she stopped doing her job. When she turned to him, her eyes were glassy.
"We have to stop this Izz. I can't stand this anymore." She ran a palm across her cheek.
"W-when I was taken, they were doing some sort of experiment on me." She shuddered. "They took my blood a-and.. I thought I was going to die."
Izz moved away from his chair and embraced her.
"You know I wouldn't let them do that. You're as important to me as this Clan."
She pulled away and returned to do her work.
"That's not what I mean, Izz." She sniffled. "They are planning something bad, really bad."
She turned to face him, and stared into his eyes.
"We have to stop this war, Izz. Once and for all."
