| CHAPTER I |
Fleur's smile stretched to her eyes as she saw the material before her.
Soft linen cloth and new ribbons, she smiled running her hands through her new clothes and looking up Marie who smiled down at her.
"Thank you so much, Marie. I cannot be any happier."
Marie laughed shaking her head and keeping up with her work of arranging the flowers for her room in a pot.
"You can do as you please with it Fleur, I thought you might need a new dress and I love your hair and ribbons would look so pretty, but of course you can use the rest for your dress as well, after all, you never ask for anything."
Fleur smiled down at the cloth and the ribbons unable to stop herself from hugging them. She was fond of ribbons. The pink ones especially, John, Marie's husband once bought her a ribbon and she wore it every day, tying her waist-long black hair put and leaving a bow.
And that Fleur ran to Marie and John, hugging them both together watching them smile. She grabbed her gifts running up the stairs of their small cottage and into her personal room. She set down the cloth meant to be for her new dress and unleashed the lace from its strings watching the ribbon fall down on the ground.
When she brought her hand up to her head, the ribbon lifted and its end hovered right near her ankles. It was the perfect gift she wished for.
She looked into her mirror, her desk filled with flowers and papers as she began to undo her hair and keep her previous ribbon on her desk. She then proceeded to tie her hair in a simple pony with her new rose pink ribbon.
Happy with the bow she tied at last she spins around in delight watching her hair fly in the air.
"Fleur, it is time for supper dear"
She turned to the voice of Marie, come from down the stairs, and gasp remembering she helped Marie.
"I am so sorry I did not help," Fleur said grabbing the plates from Marie's hand and taking them to their dinner table.
"It is quite alright. You were busy with garden today"
Fleur smiled at the sight of warm tomato soup and her fresh bread. Serving John and Marie before taking some for herself.
"I made tomato soup today. Just the way you like it, eat up"
Fleur nodded giving her aunt a sweet smile before digging in and in no time she was done. Very much delighted with the meal she had as she slumped across her chair and watch her aunt and uncle argue about the flowers in their backyard.
"Daffodils are far better" Marie state patting her lips with her table cloth as John shook in denial.
"Daffodils? absolutely not! Petunias are beautiful"
Marie gasped at her husband's suggestion, "Petunias? They will do before the first snow hits our soil. They cannot survive the cold"
"And you think daffodils will?"
With that, the argument stopped and both of them realized their hopeless statements made no sense. Rolling her eyes art John, Marie turned to Fleur for advice.
"What do you think Fleur?"
Fleur stopped washing the dishes and turned to them, one thing she knew perfectly about the couple was the other would get jealous if she chose one's side. Therefore, she always had to go with a different answer so as to avoid them both glaring at each other through the next day.
"How about I plant something you have never seen in the backyard? A surprise ? Till they bloom"
And as she predicts, Marie and Joh were delighted with her answer. There was never from Fleur an answer which disappointed the couple, they loved her and cherished her dearly.
And with that, Fleur set out to buy the seedlings for their backyard. They lived in an isolated village near a vast forest, many homes and families dwelling within the beautiful forest which contained rivers, ponds, herbs, and beautiful land of flowers. The town across them was the Greenhills town, with a population of about 400 people who were very hospitable. They welcomed people from various villages for trade making it convenient for John to make money by selling various herbs from the forest land near them.
Fleur was only a child when her aunt Marie took her in as her child, her parents perished in a house fire years ago with an unknown cause, she was traumatized till Marie brought her back to life. Fleur promised to always care for those who cared for her and save her from killing herself.
It was now nine years later, Fleur had grown up to care for her Aunt and Uncle like her parents and she couldn't have it any other way, she smiled twisting the curls of her hair around her fingers and walked further into the forest while she lifted her dress at every step ascending up a small mountain. She thought about her new dress while she walked through the trees.
Marie had given it to the local dressmaker, someone Fleur knew since her childhood. She had grown to treat all the villagers as her own family by occasionally planting new flowers in their yards or making their meals as a thank you for protecting the village from the wolves.
The wolves of the mountains terrorized many villages for ages, Although wolves were the one animal they worship and never killed, the villagers set multiple fences to protect their houses from those wolves. Fleur never understood why the villagers respected the wolves, why they never killed one. There was an understanding between them, there was never a man or woman killed by the wolves only wounded. There were multiple unanswered questions that grew in her mind about these stories and particles, but her Aunt and Uncle never answered them.
Fleur smiled letting go of her dress and breathing the fresh air at the clearing of the mountain top. The land was filled with flowers and herbs, including those she loved. Winter heath was the type of flowers she found alluring. It bloomed under trees giving such pleasant color to look upon. She set her basket down running her hand through the flowers and looking up to the clear sky. She cut some roses for her vase and then the small seedling growing by the trees of winter heath. She didn't know if they would survive her aunt's backyard but there was no harm in trying.
"After all, you will get enough sun and food"
She whispered putting the seedlings in her basket and standing up. She gasped softly feeling a sudden shiver run down her whole body. There was no breeze, the sun was out giving all a bright morning, she gulped looking around in a frown as she clutched her basket closer to her chest. Fluer felt eyes on her, somewhere from the treeline in front causing her to stumble back in fear and retreat to her house.
She set the basket down on the dinner table, the house was empty, Marie was visiting the neighbors and John was out of town. Fleur could feel her heart beating faster, she was breathing heavy after the run back to her home, a place she knew would keep her safe but her mind kept flashing back to the feeling at the mountains. It was obvious some wolves made those mountains their home with many other animals however she has never seen a wolf when the sun was out giving them light.
Putting the fear at the back of her mind, she grabbed her roses arranging them the vase next to the staircase and grabbed her basket walking out to the back yard. She began plating her seedlings and harvesting vegetables for supper. It was long till Marie walked back to the house and called for Fleur.
"Fleur dear! Miss Beth baked us some biscuits"
Fleur opened the back door at her aunt's voice and smiled seeing the freshly baked biscuits in the basket.
"That is so sweet of Miss Beth" She said grabbing one and breaking it half and biting through the half biscuit. She closed her eyes smiling at the delightful taste.
"Yes, it is. I help her baked some. How was your day, was I gone fo too long?"
Fleur shook her head having some milk before pouring it in a glass, "No, not at all. I walked to the mountains and got some flowers and seedlings" she stopped thinking about the unusual aura that surrounded the clearing.
"And? what is wrong?" her aunt gestured with her hand before tapping Fleur's shoulder getting her out of her bubble.
"Well, I felt weird today. Like someone was watching me"
Fleur notice that slight change in her aunt's posture and eyes as a happy smile softly faded away but not completely to mask something under. Fleur frowned feeling her aunt worry about it and looked at the biscuit in her hand.
"It must be a deer, or a wolf perhaps. I didn't stay long, I ran back as soon as I felt it"
Her aunt only nodded, a reassuring smile broke on her lips as she patted Fleur on her head but that wasn't enough to make Fleur feel better, inturn it made her feel scared. Her aunt was never the one to worry too much about such things. She was jolly even as the wolves were howling right behind their houses. Althought the urge to question her aunt was irrefutable she stopped herself.
"Why don't you cut up some carrots for tonight? I will go cut some fire wood, it might be colder now that winter is approaching"
Fluer nodded with no questions and went on with her work with a heavy feeling in her chest. That night she heard Marie mention it to John, Fleur kneeled on the floor upstairs peeping through the staircase railing and listening to them but they wasn't must she could gather ecept for John's response on the news. He stayed quite for a while before telling Marie to close the doors properly as their might me wolves lurking in the tree line of those mountains.
***
Fleur opened her eyes and felt her body shiver at the cold air surrounding her room. She gave a sigh pulling her covers uptp her chin and turning her head towards the windows. Her curtained stayed withdrawn and the sunlight peeked through the foggy glass.
"Fleur!" She sat up with her sheets still to her neck as Marie knocked on her door.
"Yes?"
Marie opened the door peaking in and smiling walking in, in her hand was something wrapped in scrap white cloth. Fluer rose her eyebrows staring at Marie's hand.
"I have your dress!"
Fleur stood up letting the covers fall off her body and she ran to Marie grabbing her dress and opening the folded cloth and holding it to her body. She stared at the dress in disbelief. It was a beautiful dress but she frowned turning it around and staring at it.
"It is stitched different and -"
"Yes, it does because it had a laced up front and -" with a pause Marie grabbed her dress and held her to Fluer's front. " It is time for you to wear something s bit different than a child now. You are grown up." Marie continued squeezing Fleur's right cheek.
"Its too pretty for me to wear all day Marie" Fluer stated staring at the beautiful gown. Maidens wore such dresses and she always found them pretty, she looked the one she owned currently but it was very simple and without the need to lace up her bust.
"Oh my sweet, I will have this one fixed for you as well so don't you care about that"
Fleur chuckled nodding.
"I have something else you need to know. We will be away for a few weeks, its the week of night festival at my home town and your cousin, Lily is getting married."
Fluer remembered Lily, she was the sweetest girl. They met only twice but she could never forget the tasty cookies her mother made.
"Lily? Lily is getting married?" Marie nodded sitting on Fluer's bed.
"You need to fill somethings up for the occasion Fleur. We will get you a new dress just for the wedding"
Fleur shook her head, John and Marie had done so much she couldn't accept anymore of it.
"No! I can wear my new dress, it's okay"
Marie laugh at her.
"A wedding isn't just a wedding in my town Fleur. I would understand since you have never been to one. But you will know soon"
Marie chuckled and Fleur stared back at her in confusion.
