Previously in Xavier's POV

Dread filled my body. Evangeline is the target. But, who was that? I don't know the answer to it but I know one thing. Something big is going to happen. Something I won't be able to stop!

Xavier's POV

I grunted, running a hand over my face. How long had it been since I've been sitting here in my office? I looked up from my desk towards the floor to ceiling window on the right side of my office. Sun rays peeked through the curtains. I looked at the clock on the far wall. 7 am. I sighed.

I felt extremely tired. My eyes stung and I rubbed them to ease some pain. It was no doubt they were red because of the lack of sleep. Last night, I didn't sleep. I couldn't. How could I sleep when there was someone out there trying to steal mate from me? My beautiful little mate whom I found after so many years. When I had almost lost all hope of finding my mate.

This is what I feared. Of all the threats that would loom over her as soon as they found out that she's my mate. I had to do something. I shouldn't be worried. For all I know, it could be an empty threat.

But, what if it was a serious threat? What if she really is a target of someone? I couldn't shake off this feeling of dread.

My mind was exploding with these 'What Ifs'.

I got out of my chair and walked towards the attached bathroom. I washed my face and dried it using a towel from the rack. I exited the bathroom.

Picking my cell from the desk, I placed it in my pocket and walked out of my office. I headed towards the kitchen to get myself a glass of water. Grabbing a bottle from the fridge, I poured myself a glass of cool water. Placing myself on the high chair in front of the counter, I took a sip of the water.

My cell pinged in my pocket indicating a text from someone. I placed the glass on the counter and pulled my phone out of my back pocket.

Aiden: Hey, I found the location

of the number. I emailed you the details. Call me after you've seen them.

Aiden Reed, my roommate in Connecticut, was a tracker. In fact, one of the best you could find among the packs in America.

(A/N: In case you forgot, Xavier shared an apartment with him in Connecticut for two years.)

After receiving the call from the unknown number, the first thing I did was to call him. He said that he'd try his best.

I logged in to my account and saw his email on top of the list. Opening it, I read the details.

Number: 004568061476

Location: Unclaimed territory nearly 48 km from Oakmont.

Last active: 2: 15 am. on Thursday, August 12.

Today is Friday. It means the phone must have been disposed of immediately after calling me.

Unclaimed territory. It was a dangerous territory. No one was allowed to cross it because of the vile creatures that lived there. It was told that some rogues lived there. But, most of them stayed out of that territory. It was famous for the merciless killings by a demon that lived there. It was towards the North of our territory. A frown settled on my face.

Sh*t. This was serious. No sane person would cross the unclaimed territory for just a prank call. And they would never go that deep into the forest.

I tried to call Aiden but his phone would go straight to the voice message. My eyebrows furrowed as I tried to call him again but to no vail.

I heard light footsteps in the direction of the kitchen. I smelt her scent before I could saw her. Her presence was like a warm blanket wrapped around me. But, I didn't want to worry her. She would worry if she saw my' tired, red eyes.'

"Good morning," she greeted me.

"Morning," I replied without looking up.

Evangeline sat on a stool next to me. I kept looking at my phone so she won't see the tired look on my face.

"Are you okay? You didn't sleep in our room," I heard her worry-laced voice again.

"I was busy," I gave her a short reply and went back to calling Aiden.

I felt her staring at my face. A moment later, she sighed and got up. I sneaked a glance to see her gulping a glass of orange juice. I suppressed a smile. She was so cute. Warmth filled my body. She was all mine. My mate.

"Our. She is our mate, you jerk,"' I heard Alex grumble to me.'

He has been really quiet since the last night. He was really worried but, then he suddenly shut me out and didn't talk to me. I figured he needed some time. I was happy he was talking to me again because seriously, he is my wolf. I need to talk to him whenever I am anxious. He's the calm one. I am the one who gets panicked easily.

I focused my attention back on my phone only to see that there was a text from Aiden.

Aiden: Hey, give me a minute!

Okay...

"Um... Can you drop me off at school?" I heard my mate's sweet voice.

I couldn't go because I had to talk to Aiden.

I mind-linked Asher and he agreed to give her a ride to the school.

"Asher will take you to school. He is waiting for you at the front door," I said moments later, not meeting her eyes.

I looked down to see an incoming call from Aiden. I quickly got up and walked out of the kitchen to receive the call.

I picked the call and placed it near my ear.

"Hey, Aiden"

"Hey, Xav. Did you see the email?"

"Yeah. What I am worried about is the unknown territory".

"Yeah man. You are the only one who was called using that phone. The number became in-active immediately after calling you. I think it has been disposed of soon after calling you. But, I'll keep checking the number ".

"Thanks, man," I said, sighing.

"No problem. Call me if you need more help."

"I will. Bye"

"Take care"

Disconnecting the call, I placed my phone back in my pocket and went to my room to shower and change.

After taking the shower, I felt slightly better. The warm water eased the knots in my muscles. Grabbing a pair of washed jeans and a cotton button up shirt from my closet, I threw them on. I brushed my hair and left the room.

Reaching my office, I pushed open the door and sat in my chair. It was almost 9 o' clock.

"Theo, come to my office," I mind-linked my beta.

"Yes, Alpha," came his reply.

Five minutes later, Theodore was sitting in front of my desk.

"Theo, I want you to train Evangeline. Teach her the best techniques. Since she can't shift right now, teach her offense and defense tactics in human form," I told him in a serious tone.

He nodded and said," Can I start from today?"

"Yes, she'll be home at 2 o' clock. You can start the training at 4 pm," I told him, leaning back in my chair.

He nodded his head.

"Any update on the rogues?" I asked him, leaning towards the desk.

"No Alpha. It has been really peaceful on the borders," he replied.

I nodded then sighed.

"I also want to increase the security of the pack house".

His eyebrows furrowed as he looked at me.

"Hey, is there something wrong?" Theo asked.

"Yes. I received a call last night from an unknown number. Someone was threatening Evangeline's life. I asked a friend to track the number. The location was unclaimed territory," I explained.

Theodore's eyes widened. "The unclaimed territory. But, who could that be?" He asked.

"I don't know but it was not an empty threat. The number became inactive immediately after calling me," I told him running a hand over my face, frustrated.

"Then we can only wait. I'll increase the security of the pack house," Theo replied standing up.

He rounded the desk and came towards me.

"Don't worry man. You'll figure out something," he said, patting my back.

I nodded and gave him a grateful smile.

He was my best friend before anything. He has always been there for me.

He walked out of my office closing the door behind him. I sighed and started signing the paper work.

It was almost 5 pm when I was finished with all the work. Theodore must be training Evangeline. I got up and walked out of my office, locking it behind me.

Mom called me earlier today telling me that they were extending their trip for 3 more days. Asking if I was okay with them staying a little longer. I, obviously, told her yes. They were on a vacation and if they wanted to extend it, who was I to tell them no?

Anyways, she asked about Evangeline. I told her that she is doing fine. We said our goodbye and I disconnected the call.

Reaching the ground floor, I walked out of the front floor towards the forest. Reaching the edge of the forest, I saw Evangeline and Theodore. My mate was trying to throw punches at Theo but he was dodging them well. Pride filled my body at seeing her training so hard. My wolf felt the same.

Her head turned towards me and she stared at me. Suddenly, she blushed averting her gaze from me. I heard Theo tell her that they were done for today.

"Xavier!" I heard a voice behind me.

I turned around to see my childhood best friend Becca.

She leaped towards me and I caught her in my arms. It's been almost two years since I last saw her. She lives in South Africa and is the Alpha of her pack. She hadn't found her mate yet.

"I missed you so much," she said, her voice muffled against my shoulder.

"I missed you too Becca," I replied .

"Honestly, what are you doing here. You didn't tell me you were coming?" I asked placing her back on her feet.

"I thought I could always come to see you," she pouted.

"Of course, you can," I replied, flashing her a grin.

She went towards Theodore and greeted him.

"Who is she?" She asked, pointing towards Eva.

"That's my mate, Evangeline. Evangeline this is Rebecca, my childhood best friend. She moved to South Africa after high school," I spoke.

"I don't like her, Xavier," Alex growled in my mind.

I just ignored him. He is always like this whenever Becca comes to visit.

I focused my attention towards Becca. She was saying something to Eva but, I didn't catch it as I was talking to my grumpy wolf.

"Hey Becca, let's go inside," I said to her.

She turned around, looped her arm around mine and pulled me inside.
