When the next wave of Heat cracks like a whip down my spine, I begin to whine frantically. Searchingly, I extend my arm out toward the other side of the mattress and come up empty. Immediately my eyes pop open in fear. The bed is cold on Mac's side. "Alpha?"
I sit up in bed, muscles straining with weakness. The room is blanketed in darkness, but I can see a faint light coming from under the drapes.
"Mac?" I slide to the edge of the bed, the silk sheet wrapped tightly around my naked form. "Mac?" I begin to whimper from the loss of my mate. Rapidly descending into depressed rejection. "What did I do?" I fall to my knees on the floor. The sting in my knees from hitting the stone floor barely registers in my mind. Was I not good enough? Desperately I whine for my Alpha, tears streaming down my flushed cheeks. "Mac..."
Too busy wallowing in sadness, the heavy clangs of metal and shouts don't reach my ears. Before I can react the door bursts open. "Princess!" Daniel stops at the threshold with a grimace, and Everest stands by his side.
"Hope..." Everest races toward me, falling to her knees a foot away. Eyes glazed, I shrink away from the other Omega. "Hope, it's me, Everest remember." Everest slowly reaches a hand out in my direction.
Once her own heated hand touches my skin I immediately wrap my arms around her and sob. "She left!"
Daniel turns back to the door, sword in hand. "Everest we have to go now."
She nods, "Hope we need to leave." The Omega lifts a black cloak, "Put this on."
I shake my head, "No. My Alpha."
"Mac is waiting for you." Everest smiles but it's strained. "We're going to meet her."
I lift my head up in hopefulness. "Really?"
"Yes, now put this on." I quickly throw the cloak on while Everest helps to slip boots onto my feet.
When I go to stand my legs tremble with the effort. Daniel is at my side, "Here Princess."
The Alpha easily picks me up into his arms. With a whine, I reach toward the bed where the scent of Mac and I is strongest. The thought of leaving our nest is heartbreaking. Soon I quiet down and allow Daniel to carry me. We leave Mac's chambers and enter the corridor. My eyes widen when I see the large mass of Northern soldiers armed and waiting at the front where the heavy wooden doors are.
"Where is Mac?" I tilt my head in confusion at seeing all the knights in one place.
Everest shushes me while Daniel walks through my open chamber door. The Northern Knights nod solemnly in our direction before shutting the door, two knights following in after us. The two Northern knights walk toward the door next to the fireplace. It's the one I could never open when I first arrived. I watch in surprise as the two knights work together to open the door.
The silence stretches between us. "Daniel?"
Instead of answering he sets me on the bed. "Wait here." Everest sits beside me, her hand finding mine. Daniel goes to the wardrobe in the corner of my room and starts to rifle through it. He pulls out the furs given to me by the Lycans. I tilt my head wondering why he's pulling them out. I look to Everest in confusion and then gape. She is wearing her furs from the Lycans. Daniel strides back to me and places the clothing on the bed. "Get dressed. Everest help her."
I notice that Daniel's sword is coated in red. I turn to Everest while pulling on my pants to ask why it's red when a terrible bang echoes outside. We all stiffen and turn toward my closed room door. Growls and enraged roars reverberate off the walls from outside. With a flurry of movements, Everest helps to throw the rest of my clothes on before strapping Mac's black cloak around my shoulders again. Daniel goes to join the knights in their endeavor to use their swords to cut away at the rock encrusted around the door. Finally, it gives way and opens with a creak.
"Go now!" One knight shoves Everest and me from the bed and toward Daniel.
Blinking in surprise, I look at Daniel. "What is happening?"
He shakes his head and picks me up again. "This leads to the forest?" Daniel asks the female Alpha standing guard at the door while the male knight draws his sword.
"Yes, once you reach the forest you're on your own." She lowers the guard on her helmet. "The Southerners won't follow you into the forest."
Again surprise flows through me. "What do you mean-" I'm cut off by the door slamming in our faces.
Everest trembles with a torch in her hand. "Daniel?"
He grunts and starts to briskly walk down the cold spiraling staircase. "Let's go."
I stare at Everest as she trails behind us. Fear leaking through her scent. "Everest?" I pout up at her. "It's okay."
She blinks away tears. "Thanks, Hope." Smoothing her hand down her face, Everest hurries her steps after us.
The steps become steeper but Daniel only tightens his hold on me and keeps his pace. At one point a bang resounds overhead and he swears. "Hurry!" Daniel practically runs down the slippery stairs, Everest right on his heels.
Footsteps and shouts echo from above.
Suddenly we come to a stop. Swearing again, Daniel sets me down and rams his shoulder into the door. He does this once more before the door gives way to the outside. Everest and I turn our heads from the sheer force of brightness. A fresh blanket of snow lines the ground. "Princesses this way." Daniel grabs my hand and runs outside.
The three of us race out into the woods, the hidden door closing behind us with a thud. I grip the black cloak to my chest with renewed vigor. Inside I know we're not meeting Mac. Inside I know what's happening.
The Summerland has attacked.
"I ca-can't..." Everest stumbles once again before tumbling to her knees. "I need to rest."
Daniel sets me on my feet, heavily panting he walks toward Everest. "Princess you must keep going." While the Alpha male continues to whisper to Everest, I lean against a nearby tree. Staring blankly at the black cloak that shields me from the cold elements of the North.
"Mac..." Fresh tears slide down my face. In the distance, I can hear the angered shouts of the Southern soldiers who followed us into the forest. "Father did this." Glancing up into the white abyss that we had just run from, I grip the black cloak tightly in my fist. "Daniel."
The Alpha turns to face me from his spot kneeling next to Everest. "Hope?"
"Let's go." I turn around and begin walking back toward the palace. "Father won't hurt me."
Daniel immediately stands and grasps my arm. "Princess you can't!"
"My Father will understand once I explain!" My arm twists from his grip. "Let me go."
Again Daniel grabs my arm and tugs me forcefully around. "No! Once you go to them they will kill you."
Everest comes to stand beside Daniel, "Listen to him, Hope."
"Why? Why would my own Father kill me?" Harshly, I rip my arm from his grip and take a step back.
"Because you're the mate to the Queen in the North." Everest searches my face with sadness in her gaze. "You are the only thing keeping the South from completely taking over the North." Everest and Daniel both take one of my arms. The two drag me behind them, as I begin to cry anew.
The three of us continue to travel in a straight line before reaching the familiar river that Everest and I had crossed with Magnus and his men only a few days ago. We must be too far down since there's no bridge connecting either side.
"We have to cross it." Daniel turns back, sniffing the air. "The Southern warriors won't cross this far."
Everest shoots a quick glance over her shoulder and then toward me. She extends her hand out. "Together?"
I nod, "Together!"
We cross the stream, freezing water rushing past my the tops of my boots and flooding them. Soon the water rises to my chest, chilling my insides with the freezing temperature. I glance over at Everest whose lips are blue. I know I must not look any better. Together Everest and I cross the stream and come out on the other side.
Behind us, Daniel stands with his sword drawn. Suddenly a howl pierces the air. "Daniel!" Everest calls out and beckons the Alpha in our direction.
My knees buckle underneath me. "Da-Daniel no." I go to cross the water with Everest right beside me.
The Alpha growls, his green eyes shining with an Alpha command. "Omegas." Instantly the two of us freeze in our advance. "Turn around."
Everest and I turn around to face the vast forest. "I want both of you to run." The sound of paws crunching on the snow and ice reaches our ears over the rushing water. "Do not turn back, no matter what you hear." Tears race down my and Everest's faces. We cling to each other as we are forced to follow his command. "Take care of each other!" Daniel shouts after us, "I believe in you."
While running away from Daniel the sound of a howl rings through the air again. Even though I want to glance back at Daniel, my body is forced to obey his command and push forward. We continue running before Everest suddenly trips, the two of us toppling over. In the midst of this struggle, my mind clears.
A series of victorious howls fill the early morning air.
I choke on my breath while Everest clutches at her chest. We each gaze backward. "Dan...Daniel." Everest gasps out while choking on pitiful lungfuls of air.
My hand finds hers. "Come on, we have to keep moving." When I go to stand Everest shakes her head.
"No, no they will find us!" She cries desperately while shaking her head back and forth frantically.
The exhaustion from my Heat begins to creep into my bones. Without the aid of an Alpha command or adrenaline, my body is beginning to quickly shut down. "Everest we can't stay here." I glance around for any form of shelter. All around us is pure white snow and a forest full of bare trees.
Everest cries harder. "They are going to find us. We're going to die, Hope!"
"Get ahold of yourself, woman!" I grip her shoulders and shake Everest. "Daniel sacrificed himself for us. Now we need to get as far away from here as we can." I touch our foreheads together as Everest continues to pitifully cry. "I know it hurts. I know. But we must keep moving, do it for Daniel." My legs threaten to give out underneath me. "E-Everest, please get up."
She stands up slowly, puffing out harsh breaths. "Okay." Her gloved hands wipe at her face. "We should find Magnus' clan. He will help us."
Through the haze of adrenaline burning through my insides and the water quickly freezing my soiled furs, I remember how brave Everest is. The Omega has faced many trials throughout life and this is another notch on the metaphorical bedpost.
It's been a few hours since we escaped from the Southern warriors. With no map, Everest and I have been silently walking in a random direction.
My hand goes to rub at my aching back. From all the stress my Heat had abruptly cut off from all the running. Every Omega is taught about Heats. That it is sacred to spend them with your Mate. If the Heat ends suddenly Omega's health will deteriorate. This will continue until the next full moon which will be the Omega's next chance at a successful Heat.
"Everest, come on." I groan for the third time in a row as Everest continues to stray too far behind.
The other Omega whines sadly in reply, her steps slowing even more. Stopping in my tracks, I turn to face Everest tiredly. "I know you are tired, but we have to keep going."
Everest's blue eyes blaze, "Do you not have a heart?"
My eyes widen at the sudden anger rolling off her in waves. "What?"
"Daniel is dead! Hope, you're acting like it never happened." Everest throws her hands up into the air while she continues to scream. "He risked his life to get you out of the palace!" When I go to speak Everest cuts me off. "You never should have come North, Hope. You should have stayed in the South because then none of this would have happened."
I blink in shock. "Excuse me?" My head tilts to the side. "It's my fault, that the two packs who have been at each other's throats for a century are now fighting?" She stutters but I growl, "Everest it's not my fault that the South decided to attack! Dad has always wanted to exact revenge on the North. Me being Mated to Mac only added fuel to the fire."
She rolls her eyes. "Oh please." Everest takes a step closer with her own angered growl. "You have always wanted to leave Summerland, you don't even like Mac."
"You know nothing!" My feet take a step forward.
"I know that your Dad never let you out of his sight in the last twenty-two years." Everest snaps, her eyes blazing a deep gold to further show her rising frustration. "I know that you needed a reason to escape from Summerland and at the first chance you jumped for it!"
"That's not true. I did it to help bring the two Kingdoms closer." My fists clench tightly, and the black cloak on my shoulders billows with the breeze.
She scoffs, "Whatever."
"You're not any better." I roll my eyes at the strawberry-blonde Omega. "You are always out chasing Alphas, always having spontaneous love affairs with random men."
"I'm not chasing them." Everest snarls.
"No...you're chasing the Father you never had," I smirk at her. "Everest, have you ever wondered why all the guys you fuck are similar to your Dad? It's because you're still searching for a father figure."
Another step and the two of us are nose to nose. "Shut. Up." Everest jabs her finger into my chest, her canines prominent.
"Why? Because it's true?" I laugh feeling slightly manic. "You were always jealous of the relationship I had with my Dad. Do you know why? Because you never had that. The reason you chase after all those men is that you want them to take care of you."
"Hope, stop it." Her fist wraps around the collar of my furs in warning.
With a smile, I open my mouth. "No one will ever care about you, Everest. You're broken."
The punch lands against my left cheek. With a scream I launch myself at the other girl, eyes clouded with anger and hate. We fall into a tangle of squirming limbs and snarls.
"Shut up!" I land a hit to her face, my fist comes back wet with blood. Everest growls, sinking her teeth into my thigh when I wrap my legs around her. Whining, I begin to tug on Everest's shining locks in a vain attempt at freeing my leg. "Get off!"
"You bitch!" Everest climbs off, kicking snow in my face. "I hate you!"
Now on my feet, I pant with a glare. "Fuck you, you fake ass."
The two of us let out banshee-like screams before throwing ourselves at each other again. She lunges through the air and we crash back down to the hard-packed icy ground. The ground shakes under us, and a loud creak snaps through the forest. Instead of falling, the two of us begin to slide backward down a slope.
My hands immediately grip Everest, "Everest!"
Arms wrap around me in an iron grip. "Hope!"
Snow surrounds us as the mini-avalanche continues and transforms into a landslide down the side of the mountain. Trees whip past our flailing forms as we drown in the sea of ice and snow. We slide down, branches and rocks scraping our arms and legs.
"H-Hope!" The arms holding me are ripped away.
I reach out frantically for Everest, my shout swallowed by the snow that overtakes me.
In the cold, darkness surrounds me.
