Chapter 13

"Clarence, can I ask you something?" I asked.

"Whatever Belson said, I did NOT hit the teacher. He just ran into my fist." Clarence said.

"I never was going to ask that," I muttered. "I wanted to see you know anything about someone named Kimby and Emilio?"

"Every pack does. They are rogue wolves. Born from one of their parents cheating on their partner. Pretty bad, Jeff."

"Can rogue wolves have packs?"

"Yeah!"

"Are they dangerous?"

Clarence shrugged, "Dunno. Belson doesn't want me anywhere near rogue wolves."

"Why?"

"A mate thing. You'll do anything to keep each other safe. Belson says that I am a wandering wolf and needs to look out where I am going. Something about how I am going to get hurt if I don't start paying attention." Clarence sighed. "It's sweet, yeah?"

I looked away. So, they do live in packs but what does that mean for me? I have no Native American blood in me or have any wolf shape-shifting abilities. I could very easily die! I should bring Sumo along but . . . he could get hurt. I have to do this on my own.

Clarence tapped my shoulder. I looked over to see that he is worried.

"You know, Sumo is going to be fine," Clarence said.

"Huh?" I asked, confused.

"Usually with human mates, they are always worried if their wolf mate is in life-threatening danger. Which is sometimes true but Sumo. Sumo is a fighter! He has never lost a fight and he won't be starting today."

I pressed my lips together, "Then why does this Joshua guy keeps trying to kill him?"

"That's a little bit more complicated."

"Then explain it to me. I'm in honor classes, Clarence."

"Okay, Mister Showoff. If you must know, Sumo great great grandfather was the last hereditary chief of our tribe. By default, Sumo should be the Alpha of our pack. Joshua's family line one came from mighty warriors as Chad says." Clarence looked at me with a serious expression. "Joshua knows that the moment Sumo wants the Alpha position then he has to step down. He would lose his position as leader."

"Why didn't Sumo take it in the first place?"

"Have you met, Sumo? He's basically a lone wolf. Which is strange because he hasn't left our pack."

"Sumo once told me that a reason why he is Beta is that Joshua is afraid that he would attack him."

"Oh yeah, Joshua paranoia is real, you know? The first day you moved here, Joshua said something about you. Sumo attacked first as a human than as a wolf. He caused Joshua to have a scar." Clarence frowned. "Then Sumo got hurt."

"Hurt?" I asked, feeling my chest tightening.

"Yeah, hurt. As punishment for attacking the Alpha as a Beta. He was forced to stand in front of the tribe as the Alpha strike him in wolf form. Sumo was shirtless and wasn't allowed to shift so he could heal faster. Sumo was in pain for three hours before he could shift."

I looked away. The mark I saw two nights ago was caused by me. Sumo got hurt because of me. How could he stand being near me? I am the reason why he couldn't heal fast enough. He was forced to suffer because of me.

I sighed. Clarence reaches out to reassure me but loud barks of laughter caused us to jump. Belson was insulting someone, calling them a poser as Sumo laughed. Sumo looked over at me with his intense green eyes. He winked towards me.

Sumo and Belson walked over. Belson sat next to Clarence, who wrapped him into a hug. Belson was turning red in the face. Sumo sat next to me with his usual smirk. I couldn't help but look to where the claw mark was two days ago. Sumo bumps his shoulder again mine.

"What's up, Jeffery?" Sumo asked.

"Nothing." I lied.

"Yeah, sure. Anyways, I was wondering if you wanted to do something with me tonight."

"Tonight?"

Sumo smirked, "Yeah, you know like a date."

"A date?"

"Are you just going to question everything I say, Jeffrey?"

I nodded.

He laughed, "Well, yes. I mean an actual date. Would you want to?"

"Yeah. Yes." I coughed. "Yes, I would like to go."

"Great, be ready at eight. 'Kay?"

---

Needless to say that I am losing my mind over tonight. I have no idea what to wear or say! I settle on the simple but decent look clothing. A pair of blue skinny jeans, mostly to show off my bum he stares at, and a white t-shirt. I grabbed a brown jacket because tonight will be cold.

I looked at myself in the mirror. I look decent enough. But do I look good enough for a date? When I started looking in the mirror, I can't help but notice all my flaws. How my teeth aren't perfectly white, or how my hair isn't staying down, or how, today of all days, my face is starting to break out.

Should I go? I look horrible already. I started to take off my shirt when someone knocked on my door. I looked over when it opened. There stood both of my mothers with wide smiles. That told me that Sumo is here waiting for me.

I took in a deep breathe as I walked out. They started to tell me the rules when I should come back home. And the most embarrassing, they told me to use protection. As if we will be doing that! I made sure to cover up the hickey with makeup. So, there is no way they saw it.

Then I knew why they said that. The moment my eyes landed Sumo. I wouldn't mind if we did do anything naughty by the end of the night. He is wearing a pair of black ripped skinny jeans, black combat boots, a white t-shirt with a leather jacket. His blonde mohawk is spiked up. He gave me his usual smirk as if he knew what I am thinking.

"Ready Jeffrey?" Sumo asked.

I nodded. Not trusting my voice right now.

I waved to my mothers as we walked out. Sumo has brought his car, so he could show off to my mothers no doubt. He opened the door for me. I looked at him with a small smile. Sumo rushed over to his driver's side. Sumo drove off slowly but when he got enough distance from my house he pressed his foot on the gas pedal.

He pulled up near an opening near the woods. I looked over at him with my eyebrow raised. Did I get dressed up for the woods? Sumo laughed by my confusion.

"Trust me, this is our first stop. I just have to show you something." Sumo said.

"Show me something?" I asked.

"Yeah, come on."

I got out of the car. Sumo locked the car then tossed me on his back. I wanted to shout at him but I saw why. There is mud everywhere. I muttered a thank you. He laughed in response. Sumo walked along the mud trail humming to himself. The trail ended near the river.

Sumo let me get off his back. I found myself amazed looking around the area. The noise from the rushing river filled my ears. The warm breeze blew across my skin. Then you have Sumo. He is cupping some of the river water in his hand to take a small drink. He looked back over at me.

"I like the woods more than the city," Sumo said.

"They're alright," I said.

"What do you prefer more?"

"The beach."

Sumo laughed, "Oh, I see. You like the beach but you can't skinny dip in the river."

"Not this again."

"You thought I was going to let this go?"

I rolled my eyes, "To be honest, not really. I figured you were going to keep pushing this."

Sumo laughed as he sighed. I chewed on my bottom lip before racing forward crashing against him. Sumo gasped as we hit the ground. He looked at me with wide eyes. Sumo put his hands on my hips. I sat on his stomach staring down at him.

I blinked, "Sorry."

"What for?" Sumo asked.

His voice isn't as confident as before. It sounds nervous and shaken. I imagine it must be. I just tackled him to the ground out of nowhere. I never have done this before. Nor have I ever sat on him as if this is normal.

I leaned down till our noses touched. Sumo eyes widen but a smirk crossed his lips.

"Well, isn't someone being confident?" Sumo asked.

"I'm not apologizing," I said, quickly.

"Who said I wanted you too?"

"Good."

"You know, I do like you near me, Jeffrey. Even though I much rather be on top."

I felt my entire face turn red.

Sumo laughed, "What? Didn't like to hear that?"

He flipped us around so he was top with me on the bottom. He laughed again at my reaction. Without thinking, I wrapped my arms around his shoulders. Sumo just smiled by my movement.

"Sumo?" I asked.

He hummed in response.

"Why don't you be Alpha?" I asked.

He clicked his tongue, "Didn't think you were going to ask that, Jeffrey."

"Just answer the question."

"If you must know. I don't want to be."

"Why not?"

"'Cause it sucks! You have so many lives on your hands. If they break a rule you have to punish them. If they are hurt you have to fight. You have to meet with other packs. You have to meet with the tribe elders." Sumo sighed. "It sounds awful to me."

"But you rather let Joshua take it so he can basically abuse you?"

"Just 'cause the blood runs through me, Jeffrey doesn't mean I should be Alpha."

"So what! That doesn't mean you should get hurt because of me!"

Sumo blinked, "What?"

"That scar. It was because of me. That's why you flinched when I touch it, right?"

"How did you know about that?"

"Did you seriously think I wouldn't ask that?"

Sumo leaned down and pressed our foreheads together. He wiped away the tears I didn't know have fallen. He smiled. I closed my eyes finally feeling the tears. Sumo sighed.

"You know, Jeffrey. I would many more scars for you." Sumo whispered.

"But why?" I asked.

"It tells me that you are alive."

"I don't want you to get hurt because of me, Sumo."

"Then I won't."

"We both know that is a lie."

Sumo nodded, "Then let it be a beauiful lie."

"A beautiful lie?"

"Yeah."

I finally smiled, "Okay."
