The Love Pack is one of the colder Pack's. In fact, the sky is significantly darker here, suggesting it might likely snow. I huddle closer into my seat as we begin our drive into the Pack.
"I wish you told me to bring something warmer with me," I note, gazing at the window.
The houses here are exquisite. The entire place looks like something out of a fairytale. Lawns and gardens are kept neatly trimmed from behind white picket fences, with the horizontal slides of the exterior painted to contrast the eaves. People even walk the quintessential sidewalks, bundled up in soft fur coats and gloves.
Everything here seems so cliche...Domestic.
"I'm sure we can find you something," Jasper tells me, glancing over at me while he drives. The speed limit here is tame, to match the pace everyone seems to be living at.
"This town is beautiful," I note, watching the people and places we pass by. "Their Alpha must be an amazing person."
To my surprise, Jasper chuckles, and when I cast a glance at him, he looks blatantly amused. I don't doubt that he has met all the Alpha's, unless none of them know he is still alive, like I didn't. If he does, whoever this Alpha of Love is-who I have never heard much of-must really be cause for laughter.
"Malik isn't as much of an angel as you might think," Jasper informs me with a slight chuckle. I meet the gazes of an elderly couple as we drive swiftly past. Such innocent happiness gleams in their eyes as they stroll through the cold weather, arms linked.
"What's the word for him...?" Jasper muses. "Mischievous, perhaps."
I couldn't imagine it. "Why?"
Jasper seems to think for a moment. In the meantime I enjoy what I am looking at. Precise uniform that is presented in such a delicate, enjoyable manner.
"No one really knows. He is very...passionate. He shelters his people, giving them a life like no other Pack can offer. Such a possessive man he is, wanting to protect his possessions with his life," Jasper imparts.
I would hate to imagine the Alpha of Passion, Desire and Love together. All Packs run of emotions and want, which I can imagine is a dangerous mix.
"It is," Jasper cuts through my thoughts with his words like a sharpened knife. I forgot he could read my mind. "The three of those Alpha's can be an extremely infuriating mix. Take it from myself, who has experienced many irritating people."
"Is he mated?" I ask, still wondering about the Alpha, Malik.
Jasper gives me his full attention for a moment. His lips quirk up, giving me a good look of the expression on his face that I am coming to like. Such an easy, laid back expression of playfulness.
"Why?" he asks coyly. "Interested."
I could see the game in his eyes, and I knew despite the situation, that he could make light of any moment.
I shrug. "Maybe."
"Well I know him personally. I am sure he would love you to accommodate his presence for the night," Jasper teases. Did he enjoy this? Messing with me? He seems to have been doing that the entire time I have known him. I mean, all that magic he has used on me...What about what he hasn't yet told me about?
Jasper manages to find a cute boutique on the street that was close to closing. Since I wasn't very well equipped for the chilling weather, I at least needed a coat of some sort. But despite the need, Jasper didn't look very pleased with the idea of coming in with me.
"No one is in there," I note. We stand outside the car, my hands rubbing up and down my arms in an attempt to keep myself somewhat warm.
"It's not that..." he drawls, glancing at the pretty store decorated in a rich shade of pink.
It is meant to attract the good willed people of this Pack, insisting they buy the soft shades of fabric apt for the winter climate they perpetually live in. Even if the clothing type in there isn't really my style, anything but the thin jacket I wore for rain would do.
"Come on," I sigh, narrowing my eyes at him. "Malik would come in there with me."
His jaw clenches, and I see the conflict stirring within him. "Fine, but the moment some else walks in there, I'm leaving."
I could have made a sarcastic comment to tease him, but he can read my mind. Instead I just roll my eyes and enter the small little shop, listening to the soft tinkle of the bell above the door. Jasper reluctantly follows.
The clerk at the front of the shop smiles pleasantly as we walk in. I notice her look twice at Jasper. I can't blame her...
I watch the Alpha smile knowingly from where he stands close to the door. My eyes narrow on his, as I realise his annoying abilities working in his favour. Violet eyes, I think, specifically so he would notice. Admittedly they are strange.
And I won't for a second admit, even through thought, any kind of attraction.
I end up picking out a thick coat I am sure will protect me against the elements.
"Good choice," the clerk says as she bags my item. "Looks like it's going to snow."
I follow her gaze to the sky, tainted with thick swirling cloud of intimidating darkness. I've never experienced snow before, living in a Pack where the weather is fairly tame. Aside from recently. I wonder for a fleeting moment whether or not Jasper had anything to do with it.
Suddenly the staff door opens from behind the girl currently serving us, a man emerging from it.
He looks like the epitome of a Love Pack member. The dark shade of hair, the eyes as cold and blue as ice. It's a mix that suggests so little about them, when really most of them only want one thing. Love.
The man catches my eye. His name tag reads Luke, which makes my heart jump a little. Luke, Luca. It can't be a coincidence...
"You don't look very familiar," the staff member named Luke notices. "Just moved here?"
All of a sudden, before I even had a chance to answer his question, I felt a warm hand land on my back, hand fisting my shirt. It was Jasper who had come up behind me, looming over me as he faces the other store person.
"Just visiting," he says, his tone as cool as the colour of Luke's eyes.
"Are you two together?" he asks curiously. Instantly I frowned, ready to shake my head no, and completely shut down his wild assumption, when Jasper cut in.
"Yes." His hand presses against my back tightly through my shirt, and in that moment I am grateful it isn't skin on skin contact. "We thought visiting the Love Pack would be good for our relationship."
I wanted to kill him. What kind of bullshit is he feeding Luke, and why? It seems as if the Love Pack member believes fully in what comes out of Jasper's mouth.
"That's a shame. Your girl is very beautiful," Luke says, before disappearing back into store room.
I take the coat with the bag, and stalk straight out the store. Jasper warily follows me, obviously knowing what I am mad about. But I don't even know if I am that mad about it. I think confused fits much better to what I am feeling right now.
"Care to explain?" I snap, turning around when Jasper exits the store with me. He has his hands shoved in his pockets, looking anything but sheepish, like I would expect.
He shrugs. "He was coming onto you."
"No he wasn't," I growl, remembering nothing about that man flirting with me. Jasper shakes his head as if I am the most ridiculous thing he has ever encountered. Sure, he may be magic and an Alpha, but I still don't appreciate it.
"I can read his mind," Jasper tells me. "Love Pack members are very passionate about their beliefs. He was thinking some wicked things about you, that I had to put a stop to."
I wanted to slap Jasper, but he would see it coming...No, hear it coming.
"Look, put your jacket on, and let's keep going. The person we are staying with lives deeper into the Pack. We need to get there before it starts snowing."
As much as I hated to admit it, he is right. Perhaps I would have been angrier if I wasn't still under his strange spell. So Instead of arguing, I slipped the coat on, and followed the Alpha of Devotion back to his car.
We drove for awhile longer. We were only ten minutes from the little shop, when ice crystals began to fall from the sky. Jasper seemed mildly irritated by it, while I was in awe.
"So who is this person that we are staying with?" I ask.
It had crossed my mind that maybe I should go off on my own. Jasper seems to have done a great job of making sure I didn't get into any trouble, but I am sure our partnership, or whatever it is, will have to come to an end eventually.
Right?
"Well, she doesn't actually know me," Jasper tells me warily. My eyes widen. "I needed to make sure we didn't leave a trail for your boyfriend or your father do follow. So I checked advertisements for someone offering a place in their home to stay."
I stare at him for a good few seconds, in complete and utter disbelief.
"First of all, Luca is not my boyfriend anymore," I tell him slowly. He smiles a little. "And second, we are staying with a complete stranger?"
He nods, giving me a playful smile that suggests a youthful part of him I don't see very often. "Ever heard of living on the edge?"
I close my eyes, falling back onto the car seat. Not only had I nearly been murdered by someone I thought I loved, but I have been dragged away from my Pack, to a completely different one with people who believe in strange things.
"I know it's hard," Jasper murmurs. "I promise everything will make sense soon."
I sigh, nodding as I keep my eyes close.
I don't know if I fell asleep throughout the drive, or if Jasper used his creepy time manipulation powers to pass time, but when I next opened my eyes, snow covered the ground, evening had set in, and we were parked outside a quaint little building.
"A home, for now," Jasper says, as he notices me come to again.
I force a slight smile onto my face. The future is uncertain, but hopefully I can trust Jasper to make it somewhat bearable.
