I stare blankly at him. Whoever he is.
He glances back at the road, paying attention to where he was driving for a second. But I couldn't help looking at him, letting the words process in my brain.
"Jasper is dead," I say clearly, more to myself then him. I wanted to hear the words so I could understand them, believe them.
He shakes his head slowly. "I was dead, but not anymore."
Out of everything that has happened today-with my boyfriend trying to kill me and my father disappearing-this just passes through me with ease. Perhaps I am just numb to everything right now with all the stress...
"Many years ago, my father cursed me," he tells me, his words pronounced as he tries to get me to understand. "He turned me into a Phantom Wolf out of jealously. My own father did not want me to become Alpha, and as a way to not arise suspicion, he told everyone I had committed suicide, when really I was sent to be a Phantom with many others in the Pack."
I just sat their, patiently listening.
"I am sure you understand what a Phantom Wolf is. A wolf half dead. A wolf that can walk as normal, but who's heart does not beat," he explained to me.
He glances at me, as if he is looking for permission to continue. I just stared at the rain hitting the windshield, trying to make sense of what he is telling me. And for whatever reason, I am taking it better than I would expect myself to.
"Recently a few people helped me...That is a story for another time, but I want you to know that I have been waiting to meet you for a very long time," he continued.
I decide to finally voice my opinion. "The asylum workers didn't do a very good job at keeping you locked up, did they?"
Violet eyes chuckles. That is my new name for him since I can't help but think he isn't the centuries old Alpha who supposedly died of suicide. Sure he looks strikingly similar to the Alpha, but that could just be a coincidence, right?
"I know it is hard to believe, but I need you to open your mind up to this," he says, casting me a wary look. "Because I would hate to intervene with..."
"With what? What could you do to me that I already haven't considered?" I growl. I know he probably is a mass murderer who read about Alpha Jasper and then finally decided he is him. And if my likelihood of surviving by jumping out the car was higher, I would have done it by now.
He smiled, a feline smile that suggested something I did not dare question.
"I am capable of many things," he tells me. "But if I tell you, I am sure you will not believe me. So I will show you."
My eyes widen at his words. Is he going to show me his murdering tendencies? Will he sling me from a tree like those innocent people that were my age? Is that his way of showing me?
"I have nothing to do with the murder of those people, I promise," he murmurs, making my eyes widen.
Did he just...?
"Like I said, it is hard to believe, but the assumption you think is totally wild is actually very true," violet eyes says casually. "Reading minds is something I have perfected over the years, and now I would like to think I am pretty good at infiltrating someones mind."
"I don't believe you," I say quickly, heat reaching my cheeks, as I am hasty to push away what I think is unrealistic.
Because if he can read my mind...No he can't, there is no way.
"If I couldn't, then how would I know that you don't believe that I am who I am because you don't believe in Phantom Wolves. Because you don't want anything abnormal to happen to you, after your mother was found dead in the Phantom Forest, with the cause of death unknown."
My heart stops completely for a good second, and the fact that I didn't go into cardiac arrest is a miracle.
The man, who I am slowly becoming more aware of, places his large hand on my thigh, the warmth spreading through my damp jeans. It may not have been skin on skin contact, but it almost made me calmer, like something had spread from his hand, and flooded through my veins.
Everything almost seemed to fit in place, like my mind was opening to every idea he had presented. Jasper had presented.
"Like I said before, there are many things I am capable of, and a calming touch is very small in the arsenal of tricks I have up my sleeve," he told me, taking his hand away, leaving me feeling as if I had drunk three too many drinks.
"Like magic?" I ask, wondering if that would freak me out; break through the numbness that has shrouded my brain. But when he nods, I feel nothing.
It just seems to make sense.
"It took me many years to perfect a calming touch," he tells me. "But I can safely say my touch does a lot more to you than you think."
I frown. "What does that mean?"
He shrugs, and I can tell that no amount of harassing is going to get him to spill anything.
"I feel drunk," I slur. "Does that mean your touch is supposed to calm me down? To make me understand that you are into some voodoo magic? And are some half dead beast that is said to kill innocent people? Or maybe you made me feel like this so it would be easier to lure me-"
"Stop. I am not trying to manipulate you, I am trying to help you understand how far my powers stretch. I also don't want you to feel violated when I tell you that I have been reading your mind for quite some time now. Actually, ever since I met you..."
Despite whatever magic had been forced into my veins, I was still mildly offended.
"So you're telling me that everything I thought was right there for you to sift through for your own enjoyment?" I question, but his answering smile was enough. I frown at him, resting my head back on the seat with my arms crossed over my chest.
"Are you mad?"
"No," I admit. "Whatever magic you poured into me is doing its job."
Jasper chuckles. It feels strange, even in the mind that I know now is currently being violated, to hear the name Jasper, that people haven't spoken for many years.
"Let me make it up to you. Let me answer your questions, in all seriousness and what not," Jasper promises.
I think for a moment. "Tell me exactly why they wanted to kill me, and why you decided to save me."
"Well, they technically wanted to sacrifice you. Your entire town happens to be cursed, with every resident there being a Phantom Wolf. Each and everyone of them once were alive, but died with a vendetta, like you know. Although, you and your mother were the only ones to not be Phantoms."
I stay silent, not wanting to say a word until he had finished explaining himself.
"Your mother visited your town, meeting your father, who was already a Phantom, over 100 years old. They had you, and soon after, your mother was sacrificed, like they planned to do to you," Jasper informs me.
"Why?" I whisper.
"There are two kinds of Phantom Wolves. Those turned by what they once did, while others were cursed. I was cursed, as was Luca, and your friend June," he continues. "Their parents decided to turn their children to save them from sacrifice. Your father, on the other hand, planned to sacrifice you since you were born."
Again, I wanted to ask why, but the words wouldn't come out. He can read my mind anyway.
"The Phantoms within your town believe that the Moon will grant them their souls back, and their beating hearts if they sacrifice enough of the innocent," Jasper tells me, looking as if this was paining him to say, as much as it pained me to hear.
"Did June want me dead?" I ask, my voice sounding raspy, as the emotions he had quelled still threatened at the edge of the haze.
Biting his lip, he nods solemnly. My heart falls.
"But she spent so much time trying to convince me Phantom Wolves existed, when I believed they truly didn't," I inform him, although he probably already knew.
"I'm sorry," Jasper says. "I mean that. But you are safer with me. I will make sure they never get their hands on you again."
I had so many more questions. So many. But everything I wanted to know could not be voiced.
"Will all this hit me like a ton of bricks when the magic wears off?"I decide to ask. Simple enough.
Jasper shakes his head. "No. Once you sleep, your mind would have processed the information."
That is a relief. I close for my eyes for a moment, wishing I could think of anything but what had just happened, or what I have just found out. But the numbness is uncomfortable, and a constant reminder of everything.
"We were going to mate," I breathe. "Luca and I."
When I open my eyes, Jasper looks uncomfortable by what I had just said. He even sighs deeply.
"You can't force the mate bond. Your mate will find you," he tells me. I have honestly given up on finding whoever my mate might be. But could he find me? Will he possibly grace me with his presence in the near future.
"Yes," Jasper murmurs, making me jump. He knows. He can read my mind.
Silence stretches between us for a few moments. It gives me time to think about who my future mate might be. What he might look like, and even how he will treat me. And as I let these thoughts fill my mind, I don't miss Luca in the slightest.
"Can I demonstrate another power of mine?" Jasper asks. I nod, probably not having a choice.
"It is time manipulation. I am able to bend time to suit me, ceasing whoever I am with for as long as I want, letting time pass before I let their mind go," he says, stunning me for a good second.
I have to force my mouth to close. "Wait.."
"I could hold your mind still, and let hours pass. While it would feel long for myself, it would feel like less than a second for you."
Before I could say anything, I only blinked and I knew he had used his strange power. The sky had darkened, doused with different shades of blue and purple, signifying the evening. The storm had passed, and no longer were we driving. We were parked outside a massive wall, that scaled higher than I had ever seen.
We are at another Pack.
"Holy shit," I breathe.
Not only did it dawn on me further that he had used a power only hours ago I would have ridiculed. I would have said that it was far from the realm of possibility for existence.
I turn, catching Jasper's gaze. He smiled slyly.
"Welcome to the Love Pack. Our home for the next few days."
