Chapter ix

Hendrix couldn't sleep that night. He's actually delighted that he found his uncle's daughter.

He never met him or any of his parents since he's just a baby when they all died, but he knows his contributions. Lilith and him still had a share of blood; even though she's a hybrid; he's sure that she'll be officially welcomed in the pack, now that she proved her innocence.

He's also quite glad that Aztect finally found his mate.

He's already forgiven his Beta of course, he can't bear to be mad at him for so long—without punishing him for keeping an important secret that is. It's not much of a punishment, though. The alpha just wanted to give him a vacation he deserves—so he'll be bedridden for awhile.

Hendrix just sighed as he stayed on the study room he's in.

He knows he shouldn't ignore what Lilith said. However, Helga is still his mate, so he's concerned about what might happen to his wolf if he does something to her. In certain situations, werewolves may lose their wolves when they no longer have a mate—just like what everyone thinks of what happened to Devon.

"I have to find out first who's behind her. . ." Hendrix mumbled to himself, clenching his fist. "Moon goddess really is harsh on me," he chuckled coldly as he drank liqour from his shot glass, although he couldn't get drunk. He doesn't even feel anything.

He then recalled a scenario from earlier—that time he met a mysterious woman at the waterfalls, outside the borders.

Although he didn't get a glimpse of her face, he felt an intense emotion similar to what he could feel towards Helga, that he meets on his dreams.

'It's strange. . .' he thought as he placed his hand on his chest. "That time, my heart raced. . ." he mumbled.

"Devon! Help me stand up!" He heard a loud voice outside. Upon peering out the window, he noticed Aztect, whom he had fought and injured earlier, struggling to walk.

Devon hissed, "You brought this upon yourself. I haven't slept in days, so I'll be taking a nap. You can go and fend for yourself."

"How heartless!" Aztect complained.

Devon just ignored his cousin, crawling into the ground and left.

Hendrix just shook his head while watching them from his office.

Hendrix was raised without his parents and, following their passing, his father's Beta took on the responsibility of caring for him in secrecy. As a result, when the Beta passed away, Hendrix entrusted Aztect and chose him as his own Beta.

He has raised Aztect and is familiar with him, to the extent that he is confident that Aztect is not lying about his discoveries on the mission, revealing Helga's ties to the Lunar council.

Hendrix could only feel disappointed while clenching his fist. He waited for his mate for so long, and now that he had found her, she's actually aiming for his downfall.

However, he can't act rashly. He had to keep her close to keep track of the council's plans.

He looked outside with no emotion that can be seen from his eyes as he decided to sprint as a way to ease what's troubling his mind. He wanted to run and distract himself for awhile.

Lilith's words kept repeating in his mind. He couldn't just ignore what his cousin had seen in her foresight about the fate that awaits his pack if he doesn't get rid of Helga.

"So you just gave me a mate to kill her myself, huh?" Hendrix stated in a frigid tone while gazing at the bright moon. "Do you loathe my blood that much? Do you want me to suffer more than I already did?!" He snarled, venting out at the moon goddess. "Then why don't you just kill me? It's been thousands of years! Why don't you just let me die?!" Hendrix added.

He feels numb and empty. He's alive, but he feels like he had no soul or heart left that he doesn't even feel a thing for his mate that he waited for so long.

Hendrix just continued running, with his mind filled with doubt and disappointment.

However, he suddenly halted when he recognized a familiar scent as soon as he stepped out of his territory.

He was at the foot of the mountain, but he couldn't resist the incredibly fragrant scent coming from whoever it was within it.

"Mate! Mate!" After a week of not talking, his wolf howled in excitement.

"Helga? Why is she outside the territory?" He mumbled as he shifted into his wolf form and followed the direction of that smell.

The scent is familiar, but unlike when he's with Helga, it's more intense and his heart races with so much excitement. He's filled with intense desire and longs to be with her.

The moment he arrived on top of the mountain, he shifted back into his mortal form and started walking to where that scent was coming from, only to see a woman with silver hair.

At first, he believed it was Helga, but upon closer look, he realized she was not the same person; rather she looks similar to the woman he had encountered before, at the waterfalls.

Curiosity piqued, he remained hidden and watched intently, wondering who this mysterious woman was and why his inner wolf was drawn to her as his potential mate, even though he already had Helga.

He felt a powerful desire to embrace her and was on the verge of doing so when he sensed another person approaching—Helga.

"Why did you run off here?" Helga asked, further adding to his confusion.

Despite Helga's presence, he paid her no attention and focused on the woman he had been observing before. However, she's no longer there. Hendrix only saw a glimpse of a very beautiful silver fur running towards the east.

"Hendrix—" Helga's words were interrupted when Hendrix suddenly ran off to chase after the silver wolf. He doesn't know why, but he feels like he can't let that woman go, no matter what.

However, as he ran around the forest, the silver wolf is already gone and not even one trace could be seen or smelled.

"What is happening?" He mumbled under his breath.

"Hendrix!" Helga who's running after him, yelled.

"Let's go back," Hendrix muttered frigidly while his attention is still at the last place he had seen the silver wolf in.

'Am I hallucinating? It seems so real. . .' he said at the back of his mind, longing to see the enigmatic woman he encountered.

Hendrix quickly returned to their territory, leaving Helga behind. He didn't bother looking back and went straight to his room in the mansion to rest.

When Hendrix opened his eyes, he knew exactly where he was. It was another dream, where he could meet his mate.

He find it strange that he could go into this place again. He thought it ended when he met Helga. He looked at his Luna who's not facing him and remained gazing at the moon.

For some reason, the intense feeling he has whenever he's meeting his Luna in his dreams is back, unlike whenever he's with Helga, personally.

"Helga," he called her name, but the woman didn't look at him.

"That's not my name," she mumbled, causing him to halt.

"What do you mean that's not your name?" He asked, confused. "I just met you, and you've been staying at my pack for a week now," he added.

"That's not possible Alpha," she chuckled, then looked at him intently. "Cause I never wanted to meet you, other than here," she voiced out.

Those words that his mate just said are like daggers that pierced through his heart.

"Why? I don't understand. . ." he mumbled under his breath.

"Who knows? Maybe the goddess knows that I can't meet you, so she already blessed you with another mate. Maybe she finally answered my wish," the woman uttered bitterly.

Hendrix shook his head, finally understanding the situation. "If it's not you, then I'd rather be mateless. You're the only one that I wanted," he stated in a pleading tone.

"I can''t. . . Even if I wanted to, I can't be carelessly happy," the woman said, tearing up.

"Luna. . ." Hendrix mumbled.

"I am not your Luna, Alpha. Please refrain from calling me that as the right mate for you might get hurt if she's hearing those words from your mouth," she smiled and turned her back on him.

Hendrix shook his head and was about to go after her when he ‌suddenly woke up.

***

Hendrix was forcefully pulled out of his dream when he felt a strange force lurking around Midnight Fangs, and he knew exactly whose power it was.

"Nimue," he mumbled as he immediately stood up.

"Hendrix, let's sleep more," Helga blurted out, sleepy.

She was upset last night. It's been weeks since she came, but Hendrix won't mark her. The Alpha wouldn't even touch her no matter how much she tries to seduce him and even seemed disgusted whenever she leans to kiss him.

"I have to go out, it's important," the Alpha said in a frigid manner as he started walking away.

"Hendrix!" she yelled, but it was fallen into deaf ears as Hendrix continued following the enigmatic presence inside the pack.

With a yearning for answers, he eagerly awaited the arrival of Nimue, the oldest witch, to his territory, determined not to let the chance slip by without questioning her.

"I said wai—" Helga froze when a mysterious woman draped in a dark cloak gracefully descended through the window.

"It's been a long time Alpha Hendrix. I heard you're looking for me," the oldest witch muttered with an enigmatic smile.

"I am," Hendrix confirmed. "You've been hiding for a millenium, everyone thought you're dead," he added, causing Nimue to giggle.

"Stubborn weeds can't be plucked easily, Hendrix. Aren't you also a proof of that?" She laughed, jokingly. "However, I am not here for a reunion, Alpha," she grinned, and in an instant, she teleported right in front of Helga, who about to run away.

Helga gasped and paled at the sight of Nimue.

"Where are you going darling? Don't you think you had to give back the thing you had stolen to its rightful owner?" Nimue muttered with a scheming smile.

"I don't know what you're talking about!" Helga snarled.

"What did you take from her?" Hendrix asked in a cold manner.

"I never took anything! This is the first time I saw this crazy lady!" She claimed as she started sprinting towards the forest, outside the mansion.

"Then why are you running?" Nimue, who teleported in front of her, asked.

Hendrix also followed them. "What did she take from you, Nimue?" Hendrix asked with a serious expression on his face.

"Why do you never side with me?! I am your Luna!" Helga exclaimed.

"I will side with you, if you are right," he responded, causing Helga to clench her fist.

"A month ago, while on a trip, this woman stole a ring from me. It's a powerful illusion ring that contains a drop of blood from a dear friend of mine," she chuckled. "Who knows? It might even deceive the reigning Alpha into thinking she's his mate," Nimue nonchalantly remarked.

Helga sharply gazed at Nimue. "Shut up! You lying old hag!" She snarled and shifted into her wolf form, ready to pounce on her.

"What is her fur like to you, Hendrix?" Nimue asked while restraining Helga through her magic.

"A beautiful silver wolf," he answered.

Nimue paused and looked at Hendrix for a few moments before laughing.

"What's funny?" Hendrix asked, annoyed.

Nimue giggled and shook her head. "Interesting. . . " She mumbled while nodding her head.

"Anyways, let's go back to business, sha'll we?" She grinned. "This woman's fur dark brown and ugly, actually," she chuckled. "I pressume you also doesn't feel anything towards her right? Not even the mate's bond?" Nimue clarified, earning a nod from Hendrix while clenching his fist.

"I could only distinguish her scent as my mate, but my wolf doesn't seem to recognize her," he voiced out.

"Then this woman is fake and merely deceiving you, Hendrix. I'm sure you already know that she's connected to the Lunar council. You should've been more careful," Nimue mocked.

Helga, who's now back to her mortal form, shook her head in fear. "No! Don't believe that witch Hendrix!" She yelled, trying to convince Hendrix, while being binded by Nimue's spell.

Hendrix could only look at her with disgust; his eyes ‌fuming with bloodlust. "Take off your ring, Helga," he commanded in a frigid tone.

The other warriors who heard the commotion were also sneaking in, spying on them with curiousity.

"Do I have to remove it myself?" He asked, his expression devoid of any emotion as he gazed at her.

"No! I won't! Why would I?! I should be the one you should believe in the first pla—"

Helga's words were interrupted, when in an instant, blood seeped into her ring finger, which was cut off, without even her noticing, revealing her true form to Hendrix.

"I took it off, mi lord," someone chuckled from behind—It is the emperor's ghost, Devon.

"You!" Helga squealed, looking at her detached ring finger, that Devon was holding.

He then gave it to Nimue casually. "thank you, handsome," she giggled.

"Now I understand," Hendrix blurted out, clenching his jaw.

Without the ring, she emitted a putrid and repulsive odor, and her appearance bore no resemblance to his mate's.

"The ring can only be used to deceive one person. It will show you what you desire to see and feel," Nimue explained before reluctantly taking the ring and throwing it away along with the severed finger.

Helga's eyes turned completely black as she angrily exclaimed, "You will all pay for this!"

"That line is cliche, we don't owe you anything," Devon shrugged.

"She's gonna go berserk," Nimue added.

"A demon wolf huh? So this is why you smell rotten," Hendrix grinned with a strong urge to kill Helga.

Hendrix was ready to slaughter her as she transformed to her demon wolf form, when suddenly, Devon stopped him.

"Let me be the one to kill her," Devon declared, coldly.

Devon sounded different. He seems to be in rage, exuding with a terrifying aura, which left Hendrix perplexed as Devon was usually composed.

"I'll be the one to collect her death and send her to hell, where she belongs," Devon added, fuming.

Alpha remarked, "It appears that you know her."

"I do," he confirmed while looking at Helga's direction.

"What are you saying? I don't know you!" Helga snarled, earning a cold chuckle from Devon.

"You'll know once you see my face, before you die," Devon uttered.

"Devon," Nimue called his name on a warning tone, but Devon ignored her.

"No one will find out if I kill her," Devon grinned as he walkd towards Helga's direction.

He is filled with rage while looking at Helga. Helga could feel bloodlust, Devon was emanating as he walked towards her, causing her to tremble. For some reason, she couldn't move at all.

Devon continues to approach Helga as he simultaneously removes the spell that envelops him—a spell that conceals his appearance.

After that, Devon's stature shrunk a bit and his previously masculine frame transformed into a delicate and shapely figure. Additionally, his short hair grew out and turned into long, curly locks of black.

'A woman? He—she's using a disguising magic? All this time? Why didn't I sense it?!' Confused, Hendrix asked himself.

"Who are you?" Helga asked.

Devon grinned as she held her mask and finally removed it, revealing her face in front of Helga.

"Long time no see, Helga," she said, without any emotions that can be seen in her clear silver eyes.

"Devon!" Aztect shouted, concerned.

"That woman. . . Devon is that woman?" Lilith who was also watching, asked as she looked at Devon—The same woman who gave her that gem, and the reason she recalled all her memories.

"You!—That face . . . " Shocked, Helga exclaimed while shaking, as if she saw a ghost.

The demon wolf, Helga, is growling angrily at her while stepping back, remembering her face—the face that bears significant resemblence to that woman . . .

"I just wanted to ask some questions, dear; chill," Devon chuckled coldly.

Devon's gaze shifted at Hendrix, who was in utter shock, but couldn't seem to remove his eyes from Devon—particularly those pair of silver eyes that seemed familiar to him.

"Do not interfere in my battle this time, Hendrix," she stated firmly.

Hendrix, who's still dumbfounded, could only nod.
