Chapter 3: Festival
Note: Both groups of the Ultra Recon Squad will appear in Alola throughout the story and their goals have been combined into one, finding a way to both stop and utilize Necromza's power. All four members will reappear before the climax of the story in Ultra Megapolis (Basically I'll be splitting up their encounters for each consecutive appearance for the most part)
"Well guys today's the festival, so are you ready to go?" Selene said to her team, standing outside of her house. Toriel had already left to go help Hala set up.
Bwark!
....
Pearl bounced around while Zero just glanced, he was nervous.
"It's ok Zero." Selene reassured him "On the way, I'm sure we'll catch some new Pokémon and battle some trainers, besides, the festival isn't until later today. How does that sound?"
Zero seemed to relax a little knowing Selene would be there for him.
"Pearl wants to walk. How about you?"
Zero nodded.
"I take that as a yes. Now let's get going you two."
And with that, Selene was off. Followed by her two Pokémon they reached Route 1 ready to explore and finally kick off her journey for real.
—-
Selene tripped on a hole in the ground while walking.
"Woah...."
Luckily she caught herself before she could fall. She'd been too caught up in searching for Pokémon.
"Pearl, Zero, see anything?"
Pichu?
Selene looked down to see a little Pichu hugging her leg. She smiled at the little thing.
"Do you want to battle with me?"
Pichu!
Detaching itself from her leg, the wild Pichu readied for battle as Selene commanded her starter.
*A Wild Pichu Appeared
"Go Pearl!"
The popplio jumped onto the battlefield, ready to battle.
"Use bubble!"
Pichu dodged, retaliating with a Thunder shock. It was super effective on the Popplio.
"Hang on Pearl! Use Tackle!"
Pearl tackled the baby Pokémon. Weakening it enough that her trainer could catch it.
"Go Pokeball!"
Selene tossed an empty pokeball to the Pichu.
Shake..
Shake....
Shake....
....
Click!
Pichu was caught!
Selene smiled as she picked up the pokeball. Pearl made a chirp of joy.
"Welcome to the team Pichu. I hope we can be friends."
The pokeball shook as if Pichu accepted it.
"Let's go do some training in the meantime."
—-
The grass around Iki Town were the perfect training ground for Selene and her Pokémon. They spent most of the day battling trainers and wild Pokémon. When the sun hung about midway in the sky was when they decided it would be time to head on up.
As Selene approached the steps leading up to the town, she noticed a group of strangers talking amongst themselves. They appeared to be wearing spacesuits. Zero let out a warning growl at the people, hiding behind Selene's leg.
"Tourists likely...." She shrugged. Alola gets a lot of strange characters even of the monster variety. Just a few days ago, Selene and Toriel had run into these very odd group of what looked like to be Boss Monsters while shopping.
- flashback -
The odd thing about them was the fact they looked like shadows, only their eyes were visible while their bodies were cloaked in some magical type of darkness and then there was their clothes. Old looking garments with a small star-like symbol on some of them, kinda like the Deltarune.
Toriel wasn't watching where she was going and ran into them, apologizing like crazy and asking if they were ok. One of them, whom had been eating a roll of toilet paper, bowed down and spoke.
"Forgive me Lightner, it was I who was in your way to your destination."
Toriel giggled, thinking they were a group of confused monsters who weren't too acquainted with human customs. Explaining that toilet paper isn't something you eat while Selene was left confused by the whole ordeal. Especially the fact that these weirdos kept calling them "Lightners" and these humans were defiantly reminding her of those weird monsters.
- - -
They hadn't seemed to notice her yet as they spoke. Two of them remained silent.
"Measuring the aura reading here.... the numbers seem to be a bit high. What do you think, Captain?"
The man wasn't paying attention
"Hm!? What was that? Did you say something? I was... well, I was certainly not distracted by the foolish display of a festival. So there are aura readings in this place.... Perhaps it may be the effects of the presence of these Monsters or the one they call the island kahuna. It's so bright here in Alola.... It's been so long since we have been here that I'm still not used to the light."
"The last time we had come to Alola was after the Blinding One. The day it...."
"A terrible sight it was indeed. To be that young as well... The Blinding One's rage has caused it to do terrible things...."
The two who had been talking turned around, noticing Selene, while the other two went up to Iki town. She got a better look at them then. These "humans" had really pale blue skin and purplish hair.
What were these things? Are they even humans? She pondered but deep down she had a feeling. Her SOUL sensed the Determination in them. They had the same kind of Souls as every other human yet it didn't feel right, like they were from another world of such. It had been the same gut feeling she had with the weird monsters too.
"You!" The lady spoke up
You are native to Alola here are you?"
Selene nodded, she had lived in Alola for as long as she remembered.
They looked at her funny as if she had just told a lie.
"You seem to have come from far away....."
And with that, they departed. Leaving behind a confused Selene.
In the deepest depths of her mind something cried out. Memories of a far away mountainous region, two sisters and a happy family, a shipwreck in the midst of a bad storm as a girl called out for her, the cold air as she opened her eyes on the Alolan shoreline, and finally her sobs for those she had lost as she sat under a tree.
Selene shook her head, looking down at Zero who seemed concerned.
"Well let's get going. Can't leave mom and the others waiting."
And with that, Selene and her Pokémon made their way up the stairs to meet with Toriel for the Festival.
—-
Toriel was in the middle of helping set up a table when she heard Selene's voice.
"Mom!"
The goat women beamed, placing down the Pie onto the table and scooping Selene up in a big Ursarang Hug.
"Oh my child. I was beginning to worry that you got lost."
Selene chuckled "Oh mom...."
"We are almost done setting up for the Festival so why don't you go talk to Hala?"
Selene nodded, going to look for the kahuna.
- - -
The children of the village, both human and monster ran about playing while their parents helped set up or just talked.
"Hey Makani watch this!" A young fish monster called out to their human friend as they conjured magic.
The human watched in amazement as his friend conjured up a small orb of water. It only managed to remain in place for a few seconds before vanishing.
"I'm still working on it.... At least it's not my cousin Baxter, he can't use magic for the likes of him. So my aunt sent him off to get a job at Aether." He blushed awkwardly. The human child only gave his friend an encouraging smile.
"It's ok Finn, you'll get better at it."
Finn smiled, taking his friend's advice to heart.
"You're right Makani. I need to practice more and maybe I'll be as strong as Trial Captain Undyne someday."
Both kids giggle as they run off. Hala chuckles at their goofy antics when he feels a tap on his shoulder.
"Hm?"
He glances over to see Selene standing there, her pokemon by her side.
"There you are Selene. Maybe I should explain to you what these festivals are about."
She nods
"Well then.... As you know, Alola is divided into four main island, each with their own guardian deity. Our festival today is held to express our things to these great Pokemon guardian deities for always remaining by our sides. Well, we may call it a festival, but it's just this little thing you see here. There may not be many of us, but at least every last one of us here goes all out." He explains as the two walk towards the center of town where Hau awaits with his Litten.
"Hey Selene! We though you'd never make it! Litten and I have been waiting for ages! Wait...."
Selene raised an eyebrow.
"Didn't someone explain to you what was going to happen tonight?"
She shook her head "I've never really been to one of these before cause mom and I usually just catered for the event."
Hau patted Selene on the shoulder and flashed her a bright smile. "Don't worry, you'll enjoy it. I'm sure Professor Kukui will happily explain what you'll be doing. He's just up ahead."
Taking Hau's hand, he guides Selene up towards Kukui and Lillie. Kukui waves at the two.
"Right on time!"
Lillie looks at Kukui
"But to what exactly?"
Pew!
Nebby seems to be excited. Lillie pats her back to calm it down.
"A full power festival of Pokémon battling! We battle in the name of Tapu Koko, pitting our best moves against one another in friendly competition to please our guardian, woo!"
"So that's what I'll be doing?" Sleep whispered to Hau whom nodded. "Yep!".
Lillie turned to face Selene and Hau
"So you two will be taking part in a battle?"
The two nod. Lillie looked uneasy.
"I-I don't like watching Pokémon battle each other because they get hurt but I'll be sure to watch you two."
Hala and Toriel join the group, coming in from behind Selene and Hau. Hala clears his throat.
"Well then, it's about time that we start. Selene, are you ready to battle?"
She looked down at Pearl and Zero. Pearl barked while Zero nodded. "That's a yes!"
"Before you two begin. Allow me to heal your Pokémon, dear." Toriel added. Selene retuned her team to their pokeballs and allowed her mom to do so. The boss monster held the three Pokeballs in her hand as a green aura surrounded them before returning them to their owner. Hau stared at Toriel's act with amazement.
"How did you do that!" He exclaimed.
"Oh Hau. That's just some simple healing magic. It's much faster than running to a Pokémon center." She chuckled.
"Now then, let's get started shall we?"
- - -
The villagers gathered around the small wooden arena as Selene and Hau stepped up. Toriel waved to Selene from the concession stand as Hala gave his speech.
"For the life of all the islands.... and for those who undertake the island challenge with joy in their hearts... we pray for your protection... for them and all Melemele. May this Pokémon battle be an offing to our island's guardian deity - Tapu Koko!"
"Before you stands Hau - grandson to the kahuna."
Hau walks up onto the platform as the villagers cheer. He gives them all a smile before turning to his partner.
"Let's have fun with this, Litten!"
Meorw!
"Before him stands Selene - one who has met with Tapu Koko and daughter of Toriel Dreemurr.
Selene steps up onto the platform as the crowd cheers for her as well.
"You two be careful now! I don't want to see my little Selene getting hurt." Toriel calls out. Selene chuckles nervously, embarrassed by Toriel's actions. "Mom.... I'm not the one doing battle."
"As long as we both have a good time, then I think we can it a great battle, eh?"
Selene nods as she reaches for her first pokemon, Zero. "May the best trainer win!".
"Selene! Hau! Bring forth the power of your Pokémon!"
You were challenged by Pokemon Trainer Hau
Hau sent out Pichu
"Go Zero!"
She tossed the Ultra Ball as the Chimera Pokemon made it's entrance onto the battlefield.
"Pichu use Charm!"
The little Pichu did a cute little dance at Zero. The Chimera becoming a little less willing to battle.
"Zero Tackle!"
....
"Zero?"
The null was hesitant to battle, scared that it would mame the little Pichu. Looking over at Selene with sad eyes as Pichu went for a Thunder Shock.
Neither Hau nor Selene knew hoe to react when Zero was hit. It's dementor changed almost instantly. A growl filled the arena as the Pokémon's eyes landed on the Pichu. Lowering it's head, Zero charged full speed at the Baby Pokémon, ramming it with it's control mask, knocking it out.
The crowd went silent as all eyes were now on Zero. As it came to it's senses, it began to panic know that it had lost control. Zero ran behind it's trainer, whimpering. Hau recalled Pichu and looked to Selene with worry.
"Is something wrong?"
"It's fine. For now let's continue the battle."
Selene recalled Zero as her and Hau sent out their starters.
"Go Pearl/Litten!"
"Hit them with Bubble!"
"Light them up with an Ember!"
The two moves connected, causing a mini poof as the battlers were thrown back.
"Pearl! Go for a Pound!"
"Litten, use scratch!"
Pearl missed as the Kitten Pokemon raked it's claws across her. Selene noticed how close her partner was getting to fainting.
A glint of determination lit up her eyes as she got an idea.
"Pearl! Give them all you've got!"
The Popplio charged at Litten with everything as water surrounded it's body. Litten had no time to react as it was brought down with aqua jet, securing Selene as the victor. The crowd went wild.
Hau recalled his Pokémon and rubbed his head. "What? It's already over?!"
- - -
The two shook hands with each other.
"That was a fun battle! You have the skill as a trainer Selene but what was with Zero? He just sort of... snapped after Pichu's attack hit him...."
Selene shrugged. "He was acting reluctant to fight."
Hau nodded. "Well whatever he is. He's quite a powerful Pokémon. But still, I had a blast battling."
"It was a good battle. With this, even Tapu Koko..."
Ko-ko-koo!
The Pokémon's cry rang from the night sky. Hala and everyone looked up.
"Ho! You hard it yourself! Tapu Koko's song of approval."
The crowd cheered.
"Oh, I nearly forgot!"
"What is it Kahuna Hala?" Selene asked as he approached.
"I think it's time you take this."
He hands her a bracelet. Selene takes a minute to examine the item before slipping it onto her wrist. The crowd filled gasps and awes at the sight of it.
"This is a Z-Power Ring. A mysterious armband that can draw out the power that lies deep within Pokémon... We kahunas can make these using Sparking Stones like the one you received from Tapu Koko. Though you will need to undergo the Island Challenge if you wish to draw forth Pokemon's Z Power!" He explained.
"Well, looks like your all set now to begin your island challenge, cousin! You ready Selene?"
"Yes!" She calls out, raising her band to the sky. Pearl barks.
"That's my cuz! Ready to get out there and show the world what your capable of." Kukui exclaimed, patting Selene on the back.
"Now before you go. I have something to give to you."
Hala hands Selene a little keychain that she hangs on her bag.
"Doing the island challenge is the best way to get to know all of Alola."
Everyone makes their way off of the stage. Selene runs over towards Toriel at the now mostly empty concession table.
"What an excellent performance Selene. You and your Pokémon did wonderful."
- - -
Selene, Pearl, and Zero make their way to leave as the crowd disperses. She is stopped by Lillie.
"Tapu Koko is amazing, isn't it? I hope I can meet it again someday to thank it for saving Nebby..."
Pew!
Selene smiles.
"Me too..."
"It saved you as well, didn't it? And left you that sparkling stone..."
"Selene!" Toriel waved.
"Oh, gotta go. Bye Lillie. Bye Hau."
"Bye Selene!"
"See you later."
Selene and her Pokémon leave Lillie and Nebby to themselves as the group races to catch up with Toriel. Looking down at Nebby, Lillie begins to speak.
"Isn't it amazing Nebby? Alola is just filled with wonders..."
- - -
Two of the strangers from earlier walked down from Iki town. One of them with orange hair appearing to be around the same age as some of the older children in the village whilst the other appeared to be a young man. One of them had a plate in hand with a half eaten piece of Toriel's famous butterscotch-cinnamon pie that she had made for the festival.
"That was a most mysterious event... A festival to celebrate drawing forth one's full power...." The older one mumbled.
"You looked like you were enjoying the show. Did you want to take part in the battles, too?" The younger one teased. A slight purplish blush of embarrassment creeping over the face of her companion.
"Don't be silly Zossie. We are here to investigate and learn." He turns to face her. "Even with all of our technology, we cannot control the Blinding One.... Thus we are left with no choice but to stop it by force! And yet it seems that the residents of this Alola can wield powerful auras.... and also strangely, really good food." He mumbles, taking another bite from his already half-eaten slice.
"Yeah, what'd they call that thing your eating again? A Z-Power Ring?"
"This would be a pie."
"Ohh... But the other thing. It's aura readings were off the charts! Do you think that's why they can control auras like that?"
"I believe so. Truely, Alola is quite a fascinating place. We should report back to the Captain in Hau'oil City. I'm sure he would like to try this... pie stuff."
"That's if you don't eat all of it before we get there."
The two vanish.
