Scene 13

Lea didn't make it home until late the next morning. The apartment was quiet and empty. Most of the people who lived in her building didn't have a job that they needed to get to in the morning and were most of the time too hungover from their activities the night before to make any noise. Her little sister Janalyn would be at school by now, so she would have until the afternoon to sleep off the hangover she had acquired the night before.

She walked into the kitchen and opened the refrigerator and saw that there was only a little bit of orange juice left in the jug. There wasn't enough even for one glass. "Damn it, Janalyn," Lea said the slammed the refrigerator door.

She decided to make some tea instead in the hopes that it would calm her nerves enough so she could get some sleep, but just as she filled up the teapot and put it on the stove when the house phone rang. She hardly got any calls on that phone and was thinking of canceling the service, but her sister used it mostly because Lea refused to get her a cell phone.

She assumed it was one of her sister's dumb friends and grabbed the phone almost ripping the base out of the wall. "What?!" she shouted into the receiver.

"Hello, Lea," a man's voice came through the line. She didn't recognize it and wondered how he knew her name.

"Who the hell is this?" she asked. She was annoyed that some strange guy would call, especially when she had a hangover and was about to crash into bed.

"I'm a friend of Drake's," he said. That just made her angry. "So where is he?"

"I don't know, and I don't care," she said and was about to hang up.

"You better know if you ever want to see your baby sister again," he said and gave a chuckle. "She's quite the little spitfire, even tried to use her powers on me."

"What the hell are you talking about?" Lea asked. No one knew about her powers or Janalyn's, unless... She thought for a moment. That little shit sister of hers must have slipped up and used them on someone or something. She was so dead when Lea got her hands on her.

"I know about you and your sister, and if you don't do exactly what I say she's dead and so are you," the man said.

"How do I know you even have her?" Lea asked, but inside she knew it was true.

"You don't, but my but my boys are looking after her," he said as her face had gone white. "She's under Ace and Mel's care for safe keeping. I believe you know them."

"Are you crazy?" Lea shouted into the phone. "Ace is a lunatic, and Mel is an idiot."

"Then you know them well," the man said. "I believe you knew Jed too, but unfortunately he is no longer with us."

"What the fuck do you want?" she asked visibly upset. True, she hated her sister, but at the same time she didn't want anything bad to happen to her.

"I want Drake, he said, "and you are going to bring him to me."

"I don't know where he is," she said, "and I don't fucking care."

"You better care or that little bitch sister of yours is as good as dead," he said and there was a snarl in his voice which made Lea cringe. "Find Drake now. You have until the end of the day. I want him by 8 o'clock tonight or little sister is going to have an accident."

At his last word the line went dead. Lea stood there for a few minutes just stunned, but then the phone rang again. She picked it up almost robotically. "Hello?" she said in a low voice.

"This is Miss Sellers, I'm looking for Lea Norton," she said.

"This is her," Lea said. She was still stunned but the news of her sister's alleged kidnapping, but she recognized the voice on the line. It belonged to the principal at Janalyn's school.

"Miss Norton, Janalyn didn't come to school today, and we were wondering if anything was wrong."

Lea had to think fast. If this woman suspected anything was wrong she would be the first to call the cops, and that was the last thing she needed. The only thing she could do now was lie. "Oh, no, she just has a cold," Lea said, trying to cover her nervousness. She was just trying to keep from getting hysterical, and if she was going to crack it wasn't going to be while talking to this annoying woman. "She'll be fine in a few days."

"Thank you so much," the woman said in an annoyingly pleasant voice. "Please inform us when she will be returning."

"Yes, I will, thank you," Lea said and hung up the phone. She realized that guy wasn't lying, because if Janalyn was one thing that was dependable. She wasn't the type to just disappear without telling anyone. She realized the only way to get her sister back was to find Drake, and that's what she intended to do even if it killed her.
