CHAPTER 5

Blood ran down my legs. There was no time to feel.

I remained perfectly still and listened for any other sounds of movement around the dark room. One little mistake has changed everything. The truth didn't set me free, but it didn't kill me either.

All this effort, just to let myself die. After all, I was never wanted or supposed to be here, living this life.

"She will be happy to see you."

I knew better than to disagree.

There are many things that I would like to forget.

Mother was one of them.

"You will stay here until she arrives."

Suddenly my head feels too light. It happened too fast.

Theon hit me. I could already feel a bruise coming. That moment it all became real. He grabbed me by the throat and the next thing I knew he had me on the bed. He was heavy.

"Elizabeth, what a pleasant surprise!"

The funny thing is that I managed to hear a soft laughter and steps.

I could feel some blood splashing down my lip. It wasn't my blood. It was his and it smelled just like home.

A woman with playful eyes gave me one odd look. Before I could even blink or complain she sank her teeth deep in Theon's neck. He screamed in agony while the flesh was sliding of his bones. Blood oozed out of his eyes, nose, ears and fingernails. His body fell apart on top of mine. The blood changed from a liquid to a gel. A solid, with jelly-like consistency.

"I am Elizabeth Bathory."

Bitch was still clean. With a larger than life smile, she bowed down to me. I seemed to be paralyzed.

"Since I am feeling sympathetic towards you I will explain some basic things about my kind."

I nodded and wrapped my arms around my knees. Maybe I wanted to protect myself.

"We all make mistakes, even the best of us."

Her eyes glazed over where Theon was on his last moment, which was all over me. I swallowed and licked my lips. What kind of answer was she expecting?

To avoid escalating the conversation to an argument, I continued to stare at her, like a dumb bitch.

"I'm not really sure what you want me to say."

Elizabeth took a deep breath and sat on the other side of the bed. She was a beautiful woman by any standard.

"I died in 1614. To all of you, I am the most vicious female serial killer in all recorded history."

She laughed and leaned toward me.

"When I was 11 I was betrothed to Nádasdy. Females had no right in 1575. We married when I turned 14. He despised how I outranked him."

She laughed again.

"I kept my name. It angered him, but he was also an ambitious soldier and was often away."

Elizabeth's life is not at all what she expected it to be.

"Very little of my bloodline remained. You are the last drop of my human blood."

Oh, crap. Very few things in the world could make me flinch.

History wasn't going to repeat itself. Mother was enough.

"As a human, you will not live long enough to understand much of anything."

Elizabeth's tight expression relaxed, replaced by pride. She met my eyes for a short second, then lowered her gaze and shook her head as if wondering if this was such a good idea.

"When you become a vampire nothing is wrong or right. You just are. You just exist."

She gave me a faint smile.

Long live the queen.
