Chapter one
Fiercestar looked for his friends. They didn't seem to be around. There had been cats running around saying that cats had kicked them out of certain sections of the alleyways.
"Broadneck!" I shouted.
"What?" A deep voice called out.
A brown cat with white spots stepped out of the shadows.
"Broadneck, have you heard about what the cats are doing?"
"Yes."
"We need to claim some if we are going to have a home." I was starting to get worried.
"I don't know. It doesn't feel right. Us cats have always shared the alleyways."
"Well now we don't."
"I'll think about it."
I was exasperated "There might not be time!"
I was to late. He was gone and I was shouting to a brick wall covered in graffiti. I sighed. The city was loud at night. Cars traveled on roads honking loudly and a siren was blaring probably all the time from all the police cars that were driving. The night sky was brightened up from all the neon light and signs. People shouted all night and sometimes they ran down the alleyways. Usually when they came down here they walked funny and wobbled around. One time they ended up killing a cat by throwing a glass bottle.
The sounds of cats screeching as they were kicked out was starting to get louder. Somehow I knew that by morning this alleyway would be taken up.
"Psst Fiercestar, over here."
I cautiously walked towards the voice. The dark shape of a cats was hidden in the shadow. They stepped out and the light revealed them. It was Broadneck, Smokepelt, Darkclaw, Sharptooth, Braveheart and Birchpelt.
Braveheart spoke "We are leaving to go to a different alleyway. We came to see if you would join us then we will go whether or not you come."
I realized that if I didn't go I would be left alone. They turned to go.
"Wait guys." they turned back "I am going to come. There is no other future for me."
Their eyes lite up as I joined their group. We started down the alleyway. Dodging garbage, Sewer puddles and other cats. Just as we left the tunnel we had been in we heard a cry of a group claiming it. We jumped into a large drainage pipe and continued. We were getting closer to the entrance and the condition of the alleyway started to get better. Soon we stepped unto the sidewalk.
The bright neon light blinded me for a second. People rushed by with their arms full of bags. There were cars whizzing by on the street. Doors to stores opened constantly adding more and more people to the sidewalk. We stuck close to the sides of buildings hoping that the humans wouldn't notice us. As we were walking past a Hair Salon called Curl up and Dye the window right above us shattered. We jumped as a man leaped out and ran down the street.
"That was weird." Birchpelt commented.
Broadneck shook himself "There is glass in my fur." He complained.
I shook my head. I missed the alleyway. I felt so exposed to the human world. One look around could tell me that they didn't take care of their environment. Us cats had to live in the alleyways and they looked better than the human trash world.
The air was terrible. I smelled smoke. I looked up. there was a man with a cigarette. The smoke floated right down to us. He took it out of his mouth and threw it down. The end was still red and burning. Braveheart hurried over and stomped on it. The man had long gone
"Why don't they put it in the garbage?" He asked pointing his head at the garbage right there.
"I don't know." I answered. I found the human world disgusting.
"The humans have so much and they take little notice of it all." Sharptooth growled.
We continued down the sidewalk. Soon it came to an end. Right in front of us was a busy street filled with cars. I wondered how we would cross. A couple humans wandered over and pushed a button on the side of a lamppost. There was a beeping noise and soon the flow of cars stopped and the group of people walked across. We followed them. One girl aimed a kick at us as we stepped right in front of her.
"Stupid cats." she muttered.
Sharptooth growled at her but she took no notice. When we reached the other side. It didn't seem as busy. There were mostly apartments and not many shops.
"Don't these people ever sleep?" Braveheart wondered.
"It doesn't look like it." Birchpelt answered.
I looked up. She was right. All the tall human houses had lights in every window. Maybe they slept during the day. Humans were hard to understand. It was starting to get pink on the horizon. Soon the edge of the sun was peeking over. One by one the light turned off and soon the city looked gray and lifeless.
"We should find a place to sleep." I said
"OK." Sharptooth said
We wandered around until we found an opening in the wall. We all curled up in it and soon we were asleep. I dreamed of huge, mean looking cats chasing us through alleyways. One of the lunged and put their paws at my throat. I gasped and sat up. The sun was in the middle of the sky. Dark clouds floated overhead. I was the only one up.
I looked around and saw a garbage can. I walked over to it. As I got close a sickly smell filled my nose making me choke. I jumped unto the rim of the can and started to snoop around. Soon I found a half eaten burger. I picked it up and brought if over to our group. They were just starting to wake up. Once they saw I had food they came over.
"I found us breakfast." I mumbled past the food.
I lay it down and let them eat. Sharptooth went to the garbage to find his own breakfast. He was soon back with a bag of crumbs. I took a couple bites of the burger. A sweet flavor spread into my mouth. A double decker bus rumbled past filling the small space with gassy smells. We all started coughing. The air slowly cleared up and soon it was not as bad.
"We should move on." I said.
I was eager to get going. We had to reach the big wall. That was a wall that separated the alleyways. It was randomly sitting between the buildings and it blocked the paths. Lots of cats complained about it. It made where they lived smaller. I hoped that the cats on the other side didn't claim their own tunnels.
We stepped out unto the sidewalk. Not many people were walking by. They were probably sleeping. I hoped that we weren't gonna have any trouble.
