#39 Snow Blind

Jay POV

After Frost's attack about a couple weeks back, I have been rigorous on the the patrols, especially the night ones.

The air was crisp, and full of scents. No Frost.

Behind me was my sister Violet,  Stripes and Raven.  We walked along the perimeter of our territory. Our eyes and ears alert for any trouble.

After we were done and made our way back I heard a low moan.
I told  them to stop.
" What is it Jay? Is it Frost?" Violet asked. I sniffed the air.
"No not Frost." I sniffed again. That sweet scent, it smells familar.
I followed the sound to a dumpster where I found a ball of white fur.
Her pelt wasn't brilliantly white any more but rather grey and covered in slime and grit. It was no longer glossy and fluffy but all spiky. It took a quick moment to recognize the she cat.

"Snowflake?" I said in astonishment.
Snowflake opened her eyes at me. They were full of pain and fatigue.
" You were right all along." She muttered. "Frost is a monster."
I felt sorry for her.
" I'm sorry you had to see it." I said.
"But what are you doing out here? Shouldn't you be at home?" I wondered. Snowflake looked away.
"I was kicked out."
" What for?"
"I'm carrying kits." She admitted. It was Violet's turn to speak. "Isn't that a good thing?"
Snowflake eyes sharpened. " Not when the father is Frost."
We stared  at her in disbelief.

" We should kill her." Stripes growled.
I spun around and faced  the young cat. "What?" I exclaimed. Snowflake eyes widdened in fear. "Please don't! I-I can help you! I know where he hides, I can take you there!" She said.
I looked at her then I glared at Stripes. "Why on Earth would you suggest that?"
"She carrying that murderer's kits! He should suffer!"
"I agree. He had taken away a lot, he should feel what it is like to loose." Raven agreed. Violet snarled. "What's wrong with you two? No, that's not how we do things here! If we did that  we would be no worse than Frost!"
I noded in agreement.
"Snowflake made a mistake, she didn't know better. She should not suffer for that! Besides, she's carrying kits."
"Frost's kits!"  Stripes argued. My fur bristled.
"I do not care if they are his, they are still kits who deserve to live regardless what their father has done. " I growled. Snowflake spoke up.

" So you'll let me live?" She  asked. I looked at Violet who noded. I turned to the white cat. "Yes, we'll take you with us, that is what you are saying is true." Snowflake noded.
"I can show you where he lives. He took me there a couple times at night." She said.

I gave her a smile.
" Well, let's take you home. You must be starving." I said. She smiled.
"Thanks Jay."

We came back to the shelter and I will say not every one was keen on the idea. But I managed to convince them.
After  I gave her some water and food, I watched her fall asleep.

"That was nice of you to do that  Jay."  It was Peper. Nutmeg's mother sat beside me and we watched the poor newfound mother sleep peacefully.
"I just couldn't leave her." I say.
"Of course. She had gone through a lot. She needs someone to take care of her now. Raising kits on your own isn't an easy task, believe me."
Yeah. The corner of Snowflake's mouth curled up into a smile. She was dreaming. I could not help let out a small purr.
" I'll look after her." I said.
Peper gave me amused look.
"Goodnight Jay."
"Night Peper." Once the grey she cat left, I noticed Snowflake shiver. I settled beside her and pulled her close, warming her up. Eventually the shivers subsided and I stayed up watching over her while she dreamed.
