#11 An Attack of Clarity

I stood frozen as time slowed.
" He is after Peper kits."
My siblings?

Do explain Jay." Shadow focused on him, annoyance left her expression, only concern.
"Well I started following the black cat we saw earlier-"
"You saw him Nutmeg? And did nothing?" Shadow scowled."
"How was I supposed to know he had bad intentions?" I found myself arguing.
"Anyway, I followed him into the tunnels, where we were last time. I saw Shard. She was speaking to a bunch of other cats about some plan about kidnapping Peter's kits." He informed us.
No one spoke a word.
Why would Frost want kittens? I wondered.
"Did you see Frost?" I asked
"No, he was probably somewhere else. " Relief and annoyance filled my chest. Why is he never there?

Shadow brought me back to Earth.
"Anyway we obviously need a plan.
Any suggestions Nutmeg? " I blinked in surprise.
"If they are after the kits tonight we need to move them. Put them in a safe place right now."
"And where is this so called safe place?" Another cat asked me.
"I'm not sure." I admitted. Shadow glared at me, as if I let her down.
You can't expect me to know Every thing!

Then an idea pops in to mind.
"I've got it. But you must trust me."
I have a house cat friend I trust, she could hide them for us until they leave." I suggested. Shadow smiles and give an apoved nod.
"I told you she could help you."
Raven's father scoffed.
You're agreeing to this Shadow? A true Alley Cat wouldn't involve house cats into their personal lives. "
"That may be true, for some of us Ash, but this is the plan we are going with, unless you have a better one?"
Ash grumbled under his breath.
"I didn't think so. Nutmeg we will go with yours. "

I gave a small purr.
"I also think we should split up the kits.
We don't want any of them who might be watching us become suspicious." I add.
"Good point. " I cat named Sasha agreed. "Also Peper shouldn't be one of the cats carying them. " She suggested. "She could be recognised and they could attack her."
"Agreed." Shadow meowed.
"Very well then, we need three volunteers."
"I go," Sasha offered. A Northern cat.
"So will I." A cat named Ruby said. Southern.
"Eh, I'll do it." Meowed Ash. I looked at him in surprise. He chuckled at my reaction. "I may not agree with most things but Peper has done me a solid, it will haunt me if anything did ever happen to those kits." He explained.
"Good, now let's get going, the sun is about to set in couple hours. " Shadow meowed.
Everyone split up into their groups, heading home. Those who volunteered stayed. I called Jay and Violet over. "I need you two to go over to Diana and ask if she can hide them."

"Where is it?" Violet asked. I quickly told them the address. Once they knew I sent them o there way. With Shadow's permission I left to find mom and tell her the news.

I can say she was not happy.

"I will not give up my kits!" She growled. I groaned. "Mama, look, Frost's cats are on their way tonight. If you don't give up your kits they will come in here and kidnap them, use them for a bargin or even kill them, whatever Frost has in mind for them will be bad." I tried to convince her.
"Why can't I just go with them?"
She asked softly, gentle as the breeze. Yet her green eyes were aflame. I sigh.
"If you stay here, they might not come back. If you go with them, their cats who might be watching the place will recognize you and attack you. Also if they realize you're missing they will tear this place apart and terrorize everyone here in the shelter. "
She frowned.
"So you admit it, you don't care. "
"What? Mama-"
"You don't care about me or my kits. You care about everyone else!"
I let out a frustrated sigh.
"I do care. "
"Then let me be with my kits. " She pleaded."

I opened my mouth to argue but Shadow who came over beat me to it. "Let her go Nutmeg. A mother with newborns will be stubborn, there is no point in arguing. Though I wish she could cooroperate." The black cat frowned at her sister.

I turned to leave when my mother stopped me. All that oer protetive fenzy vanished from her eyes. "I trust you." I blinked.

"You do?" Surprised by her sudden change. "It hurts them more if they do not even have a mother." Shadow gave her a reasuring lick. "Don't worry Pepper, we will protect your kits, even if we die trying."

Violet, came over and gave me a nod. "Diana says she can hide them."

"Great, call the vollenters over." I directed. Sasha, Ruby and Ash padded over and each picked up a kit.

"Alright, each of you will be paired with one of us" Pointiing at Jay and Violet. "We will be in front of you, not with you, to reduce any chances of Frost's cats figuring out what we are doing. We will be going after each other. Jay and Ruby, you go first, Violet and Ash second, Sasha you're with me last. Does everyone understand what they need to do?" Everyone nodded. "Great, lets move."

Frost POV:

Frost paced, slipping between light and shadow. His claws slide in and out, his tail twitches.
"He'll be here, just be patient Frost." Shard reminded her uncle. The silver striped cat sat at the side of of tunnel where the remaining of daylight streamed through the gratters. Frost glared at her, she stared back. steadying his icy gaze. Not willing to back down.

"Don't tell me what to do, princess." Shard widens her eyes then looked away. A sneer appears on his face satisfied that she was put back into her place, with no regard for her feelings.

He looked into the distance and that sneer grew into a sly grin.
"Klaw, at last." The red tom dipped his head in respect.
" They did just like you said. Nutmeg ordered the kits in hiding while leaving Peper behind."
"Perfect. Nutmeg is just too predictable. " He chuckled.
"Shard, lead an attack on the shelter.
Klaw, go and find where my gullible niece hid her siblings.
Leave Peper for me, it's about time we talked."

Nutmeg POV:
We watched the two pairs leave the shelter at their time, I notice my mother shiver.

"You need to hide too." I realize.

"Don't worry, I have that covered. Once those cats start appearing I am leading her out the rear window to a safe place." Shadow informed me. I walk over to the entrance and see the sky growing darker. I mention Sasha over. "Time to go." I say. She nods, with Scout sleeping soundly, hanging from his scruff, we start walking. I bound a few paces ahead and walk along the winding sidewalk. My ears are perked and alert, focusing on Sasha's quick pawsteps and my nose up, keeping alert for any sudden trace of fresh tangy cat scents. After a few turns we arrive.

"You made it! Thanks goodness! Come on in, my mother is out for the night so it won't be a poblem." Diana meowed. She takes a sleeping Scout and carry him upstairs to the cat room where the rest of the kittens slept in peace. In the room is Jay and Violet taking turns to keep the kits warm. While Ruby and Ash sat down on the carpet near the window. Diana's brother Rex loomed over the kits with a puzzled look. "Why are we doing this again?" Diana snorted. "How many times do I have to remind you Rex? Leave them in peace!" She hissed quietly.

"You didn't answer my question." He argued.

"You're doing this because if we don't they die." I told him, straight in the eye. Rex gave me a suprised, fearful look.

"Who would kill such innocent cute kits?" He wondered.

"That would be Frost." Jay infomed him. Scowling at the name.

"I'm heading back." I begin. "Are you guys staying?"
"It's better we do, you never know if one of the cats saw us." Violet reasoned. I nodded in approval. "Good idea," I turned. I'll take it that you want to stay Sasha?"
Sasha shook her head. "I'll join you. I like fighting, can't stand sitting around. "

So it was set.

Sasha and I left for the shelter and I went straight for the rear rooms.
Curled up in a ball, my mother looked at me.
"They are safe, Jay, Violet,Ruby and Ash are staying just in case." I informed her. My mother's tensed shoulders start to relax.
"I take it you're going to fight?"
She asked me. I shook my head and sat beside her. "I'm going to defend."

Night falls and everyone lay quiet. Claws all slide out at the first sign of trouble.
Within seconds the shelter transforms into a building of screaming cats, blood being splat against the white walls. Cats fight in the dark, fur turns into spikes, eyes grow wild.
About 12 well trained cats attack at the front. Try to work their way inside.
In the corner were the rest of the shelter's kits and their mothers looking at the entrance to the room with fear and determination.
I raise to my feet and turn to Shadow. "You need to take her out, now." I ordered.
Shadow lead my mother out the low open window just as one of Frost's cats run in.
It was the black cat I saw earlier. The muscular tom with blazing amber eyes stalked in. His claws out, dripping with blood, his fangs glinting in a sneer.
"Trying to go somewhere?"
"He glanced at my at my mother, half way out. She freezes at the sight of him. A smirk crept onto his face
"I didn't think so.

Violets POV:

I lay in a basket, with the kits sleeping soundly besisde me.
They are so cute ! I can't imagine why Frost wants them.

Pacing the room is my brother. There is this odd look of his blue eyes, the look of self inflicting pain. He had been looking that way everytime Nutmeg isn't there. Hiding from her I suppose. Every time though I ask him about it he just shrug it off.
How irritating.
By the window, Ash and Ruby look out the window, watching out for any danger.
Diana lay a few tail lengths beside me.
"What is Frost like?" Asks Diana's brother Rex.
The ginger tom was lying beside the scratch tower staring at us strangers.
"Frost is a revegeful killer, an outcast to us Alley Cats." I answered.
"Why is he like that?" The cat asked.
" He had a hard life as a kit. "I answer him.
"Yeah I get that but why? Why can't he just move on?" I let out an expressed sigh. Being annoyed by the young cat's questions.
"I don't know! Every story must have villain I guess."
"So are you guys heros? He asked us.
I look to my friends and brother. Are we noble cats? Cats to be considered heros? I think about all the blood we spill. Is that heroic?

Before I can reply to him Ruby and Ash jump to their feet, alarmed.
"There are a group of cats coming this way." Ruby informed us.
Saved by the bell.
My ears twich at the news.
"How many?" Jay demanded.
"Three."
"We can't have them inside. " Diana meowed in worry, glancing at the kits.
"Hide them somewhere else deeper in the house. "My brother ordered me and Diana.
"Ruby, Ash, we'll fight them outside. let's go. "
"What I about me?" Rex started. "I wanna fight!"
"No not you Rex, mom will be upset if she finds you covered in scars or worse. If you wanna help take a kit and follow me. "
Rex muttered under his breath as he picked up Rings, the black and white ring she cat hang by her scruff. Diana picked up Ginger while I had Scout. Diana led us up the 2nd floor into one of the bed rooms through a cat trap door. Once inside we pushed a box in front of it, preventing any of Frost's cats to attack us.
"We should be safe here." Diana reassured us.
Let's hope they don't come in.

Jay's POV

With Ash and Ruby flanking me we aproched the the cats. One of them I recognize. It was the red tom I spotted earlier today. Flanking him are two toirshells.
"Where are the kits?" He snaped.
I frown at him, claws sliding out.
"Why should I ever tell you?"
With a whip of his tail his cats attack.
"Because then I would have to kill you, and that wouldn't be pretty now would it?

Nutmeg's POV

I mention mama to leave and she slips through the window. Then I look back at the intruder.
He and I cricled the room, the rest of the mothers and their kits watching us from the corner in fear.
The intruder flash a grin at me.
"I don't think we met, I'm Blake. "
"I don't care." I growl.
"Your loss." Then his smile melted away into hatred.
Blake attacked and lashed out, I easily dogged them and raked his sides. I swipe his face, cutting his left eye.
Blake hissed in pain and shoved to to the ground and kicked me to the side. I let out a groan, my body aching all over. I spotted him leap through the window.
A screech fills me ears.
Mama.
I spring to my feet, fueled by raw fury.
I jump through the window, feeling the window rake my spine.
Landing on my feet on the other side.
Ahead of me is the park, illuminated by dim streetlights. Fighting in the grass is Aunt Shadow and Blake. Huddled behind a bench my mother watch with fear.
Behind her another cat creep behind her. Her silver fur is flat, green eyes peircing in the darkness of the shadows.
Shard.

Jay's POV

I battle the red tom, swiping at his ears. batting his head, kicking him, till he buckles and fall onto his back.
I stare into his amber eyes blazing.
With a hind claw I rake his soft exposed belly. He yowls in pain and bites my foreleg. I hiss, but don't even bother let go. I sink my claws into is shoulder , he winces. He throws his head back and bumps my lowered head with a head slam. Dizzy I loose my grip. He takes that opportunity to pink me down. Unable to move, I try to head but him but he jerks his head back but doesn't let go. I try to bite his leg but he pins his paws at my kneck. choking me.
My eyes grow blurry as I struggle to get the heavy cat off but he doesn't budge. A surge of panic fills me, my mind begins blanking out. I turn to my friends if they can aid me but they are pinned as well.
I look back at my opponent in fear. He glares me down and aplies more pressure.
I'm lightheaded and can't think straight.
I'm going to die. I realize.
I think about Violet and my mother how depressed they will be when they find my dead body.
Then I think about Nutmeg. How upset she will be. I picture her in my blanking mind. My heart breaks.
To be separated from her is unthinkable. Then I know what I need to do.
I stare back at my opponent.
"I- will- not, die!" I gasped for air. With the remaining strength I had I uses my paw that wasn't pinned and sliced at his chest, tilting. He lost his balance and grip. Took a deep breath and kicked him hard as I could. sending him to hit the sidewalk. I wtached as a car ran pass, it's front wheel crushing his tail. He screeched in pain and once free he ran away. His cats looked up at me and in seconds they ran away as well.
I helped Ash and Ruby up to their feet.
"We did it. " I panted. Ash grinned as our opponents ran way.
"I always knew they were weak ."
I chucked lightly. Watching their tails disapear from view.
Thanks Nut.

Nutmeg's POV

"Mama look out!" I yell.
Shard springs at her while I sprint over. Just as her claws brush mama's fur I leap at her, claws sinking into her shoulders and I knock her down into the grass. We roll around batting each other's faces.
Shard bite at my foreleg, I bite at her ear, ripping a nicked ear.
She screams in pain, getting the attention of Blake.
"Shard!" He jumps off of Shadow and starts attacking me, viciously. Swiping at my flanks, raking my cheeks. He pins me down and I am unable to defend myself from his raised paw.
Then he is knocked off from a kick from my mother. Blake, dazed rolls and hits the bench at the back of his head and slumps.
"Are you okay?" She askes me. Looking down. I weakly nod. My eyes widden as Shard springs at mama from behind. Before I can warn her Shadow shoves her sister out of the way, having Shard to snap her kneck instead.
"No!" I hear my mother shout. Out of rage mama rushes over to her dead sister. Burying her nose into her lifeless body. Staggering to my feet I stare at the scene, unable to process what I was seeing.
Shadow is dead?
My mother's cries echoes fill my ears, filling my head, unable to focus, or even pay attention to Blake or Shard as they slip away limping.
I silently walk over to my sobbing mother and pulled her close, allowing her to cry into my sore shoulder.
Looking pass my mother's grey pelt I stare into my aunt's empty diluted eyes.
She put so much faith in me and I failed, I let her down.
If more cats die because of me then how can I ever lead?

...

After the battle I led mama to Diana's home so she can nurse the kits while we search the place for any more Frost cats who might be hiding. After a good search we brought them back.
Everyone mourned the loss of Shadow. Even though we won this fight, the price made it less of a victory.
" You okay Nut?" Violet asked me.
We were on the roof, gazing at the night sky. ignoring the night sounds of the city, wishing it would go to sleep already and leave us in peace.
"No I am not. Shadow trusted me, everyone trusted me, my mother trusted me. Now I feel like. failed every one." Meowed sadly.
Violet thought for a moment.
"Let's see, Frost planned to kidnap the kits, your plan was to protect them and it did. How is that failure? "
I look at her.
"Because Shadow died because of my plan. I forgot to hide my mother so she took it upon herself to do it for me. Then she got herself killed.
She trust me with the planning.
I failed her. "
I felt Violets tail rest on my sore shoulders.
"I understand that Nut but I also understand she was protecting her sister. She died to protect her not died because of a plan. She risked her own life for her sister's sake. See? It's not your fault. "
She reassured me.
I rested my head on her shoulder.
"I know I just wish she was alive."

Pepper's POV

I sat outside, behind the shelter sobbing. At my feet was my sister. My sweet sister. Dead.
"First I lost Wallnut, my son and now my sister, how many cats can Frost take away from me?"

"A lot more."

I wirlled around and faced the white tom.
" Hi Pepper." Frost meowed sheepishly.
I slapped him. Hard.
Stunned he looked at me. "Well that I was not expecting."
"Well what we're you expecting Frost? You're the cat responsible for all my loss! Shadow, Patches and Wallnut.
All. Your. Fault. " I poked him in the chest for emphasis. Frost looked at her sharply.
"That may be true but if Wallnut didn't -"
"If Wallnut didn't what?" I snapped. "You still don't know how to let things go do you Frost? Wallnut had nothing do it with it."
A smirk crept onto his face.
"You're absolutly right, Wallut had nothing to do with it."
I frowned.
Frost continued. "I didn't have to kill him. Or chase your son out of town. I didn't have to do any of those things." He said stepping forward.

"What are you going at Frost?" I asked him, stepping back.
His eyes grow wild and he steps closer and closer pinning me to the the wall.
"Why do all of that when I could of gotten rid of the one cat that cost me pain and heartbreak, was the one that lead me to banishment?" He looked down at me mischievously.
My eyes widden.

He blinks then shakes his head and retreated, letting me go.
"No, I won't kill you. You don't deserve death, but suffering. And the best thing to do that is to take away everything from you love so that you will be alone. Just like me. So that you wish you said no. " He growled. With that he turned and left me. Just as a light rain shower began.
His words echoes in my ears.

You don't deserve death, but suffering. And the best thing to do that is to take away everything from you love.

Oh what am I going to do?

Authors Note

What are you going to do Peper?

Hi everyone! I hope you all had a good week. Mine was okay.
Writing this chapter surprisingly didn't take very long to write. Even though it was lonnngggggg!
I think I wrote like 4 or 5 pages. Anyway just wanted some more drama in their lives.

I think it was long because it has the most Points of view.

Did you guys like it? Which POV you liked the most?
Nutmeg?
Jay?
Violet?
Peper?
Frost?

I think this chapter really clears up and defines and advances the main characters.
some for the better others for the worse.

Anyway this has been too long so I'll end it with a
