Chapter Seven

After Caleb leaves, I hang out with Allaya. I want to take her somewhere, but I don't have a stroller or any way to transport her safely. I don't have a car, I still take the train that I used when I was in Dauntless. They kept it running so that other people without cars still have transportation, and it is a symbol of the experiment.

I need to buy Allaya more stuff. What Cara got isn't enough. I still need a stroller, a couple more outfits, more baby food, a high chair, etc. I sigh, how will I take her with me? Walking to the nearest store would take hours, but by the train it would take twenty minutes. I suppose I can take Allaya on the train, just this once.

I'm still in my pajamas that I slipped into before I went to bed last night, so I have to change. I take Allaya into my bedroom and lay her down on the bed. I need to take a shower as well, but it has to be a short one. I don't feel comfortable leaving Allaya alone for long.

I grab a new outfit of regular blue jeans and a black shirt. It still feels weird seeing the colors from different factions together, but I've gotten used to it.

Allaya is asleep, so I go into the bathroom, take a quick shower, and get dressed. I open the bathroom door so I can see Allaya as I do my hair and get ready to leave. She sleeps the entire time I get ready, which is nice. She woke up only once last night, so I take that as a good sign.

She only begins to fuss when I'm completely done getting ready. Her diaper is wet, so she needs to be changed. I pull her outfit off and set her dirty diaper to the side. I wiper her and replace the old diaper with a new one. She seems to like my window. I lay her blanket down inside the window, and lay her on top of it. She watches the sky and the clouds as they pass by. She doesn't bother looking down, only up. Just like her mother...

Allaya lays there for a while, and I let her. She seems to like it, and I don't want to disturb her. It's already 11:45, and I'm hungry again. She's safe in here, so I walk into the kitchen and pull out the fixings to make a sandwich. I always have cake, so I pull that out too.

I make the sandwich, and put it as well as the cake on a plate. I take it into my bedroom to watch Allaya. Her eyes are still wide, and she continues to watch the sky. I wonder if that's what Tris did when she was a baby, watch the sky.

Allaya makes a bunch of baby noises, but they're coming from her, so they're cute. If Zeke or Matthew was making them, I would flip on them. They know I hate mouth noises, I always have.

I decide that I should go, I don't want to be too late to the store, I don't know when they close. I put my dishes in the sink, making a reminder to wash them later, and go to get Allaya. I don't want to make her come with me, but I have too. I can't leave her alone. Besides, she might like the train ride.

I put on a loose jacket, and pick Allaya up. She doesn't mind, so I don't feel as bad. I grab my phone and wallet, and head out the door. The train will pass by the stop in fifteen minutes, but it only takes ten minutes to get there.

The walk is short, but I like it. I've always liked being outdoors. I work for the police department, and I train people so they can join. (I know that in the book, he says he does politics, but this fits better for the story plot. Thanks for understanding!)

When we arrive at the station, I lean against a pole and wait for the train. It doesn't take long before I hear the familiar honking and feel the vibrations in the floor boards. I watch as the train grows nearer, slowing down so I have an opportunity to get on.

I put Allaya inside my jacket, so she takes up the loose space inside. She fits perfectly, and is secure. I still keep a hand underneath her, just in case. The first car passes and I begin running. I am up to speed with the third car, so I decide to get on that one. I reach out and grab the handle, pulling myself inside with ease.

The car is empty, as expected. Not many people still take the train. It's still a 'Dauntless' thing. The store is a twenty minute trip, so I settle down on the floor, keeping an eye outside so we don't miss the stop.

The air is cool and is strong. Luckily, Allaya is protected by my jacket, so she is most likely warm and fast asleep. I can't see her face, since it's facing down.

The city passes by in a blur, and I can't make everything out clearly.

The train slows down, signaling that it's time to get off. I stand up and wait till I see the patch of green grass. Here is the tricky part. When I jump, I can't let Allaya get hurt. I will have to stay upright.

I jump, the world stopping all at once, everything fitting into it's rightful place. My feet hit the floor, sending a prick of pain through my entire body. I stumble forward for a few steps, before regaining my balance.

I glance down at Allaya, and see that she's still asleep. Maybe she will be like Tris, sleep deeply, but awake when she needs to. Or maybe she will sleep like me, restless.

I begin the fifteen minute walk that leads to the store that I will buy baby supplies. I need to get a lot of things. I just now realize, how will I get all of these things home? Maybe I can ask someone to pick me up. Matthew is the only one I know that has a car, that lives near by.

When I reach the baby store, I poke around for a while. I didn't ask Christina to come for a reason: She would spend way too much money, and I would be here forever. It's better that I came alone.

I decide on getting a three-wheeled stroller, a couple outfits, more diapers, more baby food, and a couple of other things.

I pull out my phone and call Matthew. He picks up after one ring. (Underlined is Tobias, plain is Matthew.)

What do you need?

Can you pick me up?

Sure, where are you?

The baby place on Main Street.

Why are you there? Never mind, I'll be there in ten.

Matthew hangs up, leaving the world silent. I walk up the cashier. She doesn't seem too happy, because she glares at me when she sees me. She doesn't say anything as she scans the stuff I put on the side table. I pay with my credit card, and she asks, "Credit or Debit?" It's the only thing she says to me, and it sounds as if she doesn't care about the world. She probably doesn't.

"Credit." I say, not bothering to smile. She doesn't seem like the type of person who wants to be cheered up. She seems content on the way she is, so I don't bother her. She bags my stuff and puts them in my cart. I push the stuff outside and wait for Matthew to show up. I know I'm going to have to answer quiet a few questions from him as well. Great, now three people will know. I suppose everyone will know tomorrow, so it doesn't matter.

Everyone will know that Tris is alive, and Allaya is her child.

It pains me to even think about it, to think that Tris is out there, out of my reach.
