Chapter Eleven
Tris P.O.V.
My friends. I see all of my friends, laying on beds, chained down. But they aren't just my friends, they're the ones that died, the ones that didn't live through the war. Uriah, Tori, Will, Al, Marlene, and Lynn. They are all here.
It can't be true. They all died trying to help us overthrow the government, all of them. Yet, I see them right here, right now. Their chests are slowly moving up and down, meaning that they are breathing. There is a wall in between each of them, and glass blocking my path in. I need to see them, I need to see my friends.
The doors open behind me, and several soldiers, with guns, pile into the room. Two of them grab me and pull me away, while the others crowd around, forming a barrier that I can't escape.
They wouldn't shoot me, they can't shoot me. If they kill me, they will have nobody to do their experiments on. The guns are for show, they're not going to actually use them, not on me at least.
Two of the soldiers hold onto both of my elbows. Their guns are in their holster, at the waist. I could easily grab it and break free.
Using both of my hands, I reach down and grab the handle of two guns, pulling them out of the holsters. I push them into the air, and hold my finger just above the trigger. All the soldiers with guns turn to me, their guns fixed at my head.
"Give us back the guns and we won't shoot." One of them says.
I can't help but scoff and say, "I'm not that stupid. These are real guns."
"And we will use them."
I continue, "No you won't, because if you do, if you shoot me, I will die. There will be nobody to use for the experiments, and it will be your fault. However, I can shoot you. There is no reason not to." I say, with a smirk on my face.
"Put the guns on the floor now. You are surrounded, and there is no way out. There is no point in shooting us, it will do you no good." A man says.
He has a point, if I shoot, they will just send more and more soldiers after me. I won't be able to make it out, not yet. I sigh, and set the guns on the floor.
"Now kick them away from you."
I do as he says, and kick them away from me, towards him. He bends down and picks them up, handing one to the other man so they each have a weapon.
All of the soldiers bring the guns down and continue to lead me to the testing room.
There is no escape here, I'm stuck her for a while. Maybe I can come up with a plan, maybe Tobias will come to save me. Maybe he won't. I don't know what to believe. Not anymore.
Tobias P.O.V.
We get up and rush out the building, heading for Matthew's truck. The lady at the front desk looks like she's about to ask something, but I rush away, not giving her time to speak. We hop in the car and Matthew starts it. It's only been five minutes since we saw the video, but it will take ten minutes to get back to my apartment. I don't know if we will make it in time.
I pick up my phone and call Caleb. It rings six times, but nobody picks up. Either he is stupid and left his phone somewhere, or we were beaten back to my apartment.
The entire car ride is uneventful, and frustrating. I need to get back to my apartment, and fast. Matthew is already driving 60 mph on a 25 mph road. I can't ask him to go much faster. The road is empty, so nobody will see us.
The city passes by in a blur. I see kids playing outside, parents laughing. I wish I could be like them, live a normal life. instead of fighting one war after another. Maybe, Allaya, Tris and I can be a family one day. Maybe it's destined, but maybe it's destined for failure.
We pull into the parking lot of my apartment complex, and I run inside, not waiting for Matthew. I head for the elevator when I realize something. In all the chaos of coming here, I left my wallet with the card that leads to my apartment at the security building. I clench my entire body with frustration.
I walk up to the man at the front desk. He is looking at a computer screen and says, "One moment please."
"No, I need the card to my apartment, now." I say. This gets his attention, and he looks up.
He pauses for a moment and then says, "Name please?"
"Tobias Eaton, apartment floor 3." His face lights up with recognition as he finds my name on the screen. He walks back into the back-room. I tap my feet impatiently as I wait for him to return. Matthew 'jogs' up beside me. It's not necessarily a jog, it's more like an odd speed walk.
The man returns and outstretches him arm, dropping a card into my hand. Without thanking him, I quickly walk to the elevator, with Matthew following close behind me. We step inside, and I hit the number three. The doors close, and I only feel one fear right now. This time, it's not dropping to ultimate death, it's my fear of losing Allaya. A fear of losing my daughter.
The elevator dings, signaling we're here. I slide the card, and wait. It pauses for a second, but finally dings again. The doors open, and I walk into my apartment.
