Chapter Ten

Josh tossed his keys on the kitchen counter, and flopped down on the stool at the island. He sighed, running his hand over his face. His conversation with Sophie had his head spinning and he knew one wrong move could spin his world spiraling out of control. Josh felt a sense of calmness take over at the wooden picture frame lying on the island, he assumed was drying. Maya had painted the words "Love at first sight" in white. He smiled, carefully pick up the frame that held the sonogram.

"Hey," Maya smiled as she walking into the kitchen. "I thought I heard you."

Josh weakly returned her smile, his nerves shooting back up at the sight of his wife. He carefully put back down the picture frame.

Maya could instantly see something was wrong. He was hurting. "What happened? Did it go bad again?" she asked, gently.

Josh turned on his stool to face his wife and pulled her onto his lap. He rested his forehead in the crook of her neck as she wrapped her arms around his shoulder resting her head on top of his, running her hand up and down his back. The two sat there in silence not moving before Josh finally took in a deep breath, pressing a kiss on the side of her neck and finally looking up at his wife. He just stared at her for moment before resting his hand on her stomach.

Maya gave him a small smile, resting her hand on top of his. "How bad was it?" she asked, softly.

"I knew I missed a lot with Hunter like the day he was born, his first smile, laugh, tooth, crawling, walking, first time he hit a ball and his first day of school but I never realized all the little thing I missed out on too. How much I missed out on him growing his own personality, and the things he liked and didn't like and how he is when it comes to things and how much I don't know about him."

Maya remained quiet, listening to her husband. She couldn't understand how he was feeling because she was feeling another way, but she hated seeing him so torn up and down.

"I'm happy I get to experience everything with this little one." Josh glanced down at Maya's stomach and a slight smile reappearing on his face before he furrowed his eyebrows, "This may sound crazy but I swear you've popped out overnight since everyone found out."

Maya nodded. "I know, right?" she exclaimed, pulling back and rubbing her stomach as her own eyes fell down onto it. "It's like the baby knew it didn't have to hide anymore."

Josh chuckled. "I can't wait for this little one."

"Me too," Maya murmured.

The two quietly staring down at Maya growing stomach.

"We have to back down," Josh told Maya, quietly, knowing she would know exactly what he meant.

Maya looked back up into Josh's eyes. "Josh."

"I don't want to do anything that is going to push Sophie away and make her keep Hunter away from me. Baseball is pretty much over. She has no reason to let me see Hunter."

"But she does. If Hunter is your son then she has a reason to let him see you. You have the right to see him."

Josh took in a deep breath, letting it out slowly, "You're right," he agreed but Maya could see there was something else. "But I know this has been hard on you and I have to protect you," he continued, staring into her eyes causing Maya to swallow. "Both of you," he glance down to her stomach before looking back into Maya's eyes. "I've been letting you down and I'm not going to keep putting you through the ringer. I'm not going to go to war with Sophie with you being pregnant," he said, shaking his head, knowing how bad it could get. He cupped her cheeks between his hands. "I love you."

Maya stared into his eyes. "I love you too,"

"You have to trust me."

Maya slowly nodded. "I do trust you."

Josh nodded, "If she wants to call the shots then we let her call them. We will take the baby steps she wants to take. I'll get to spend time getting to know Hunter while I get to concentrate on you and our baby."

Maya pressed her lips together, still having a sinking feeling about all of this, but she nodded. "Okay," she quietly agreed.

"I'm still sad I'm not going to be in the room with you when you find out what you are having."

Josh rolled his eyes. "For the hundredth time we're not even finding out in the room. We are going to have the doctor write it down on a piece of paper and we want to find out together alone. Just the two of us."

Maya smiled as she listened to the two, excited for the moment to find out what her baby is.

"Why can't I be there," Riley whined.

"What part of alone don't you understand?"

"The part where it doesn't include me," Riley pouted.

"Riley."

"Fine," Riley sighed, looking back down at her list of baby names. "What about Mason?" she suggested, looking over at Maya. "You use to love that name."

Maya scrunched up her face. "I did until I had a student named Mason who was a pain in my ass. I can't say the name Mason without seeing his little face."

"And I don't know why you are suggesting any boy names. We already have a boy name picked out."

Maya looked over at Josh raising an eyebrow. "Do we?"

"Ugh yeah," Josh smirked, raising his own eyebrow. "Joshua Gabriel Matthews Jr," he continued as if it was the most obvious thing in the world.

Riley rolled her eyes, "And let me guess you want all of your children's names to start with a J like your favorite Duggar family?"

"That's not happening," Maya answered before Josh could.

"And that's Maya's favorite tv show, not mine," Josh added.

"Liar."

Both Maya and Riley said at the same time.

"Babe, that is your guilty pleasure. Not mine," Maya pointed out. "And wanting a baseball team filled of your children."

"It would be cool to have your own baseball team filled of your children playing out on the field," Josh said, dreamily.

Maya pouted her lips, shaking her head. "I'm not having that many kids and it would never work. Your oldest isn't going to play on the same baseball team as your youngest."

Josh put his pointer finger against Maya's lips, "Shh let a man dream."

Maya playfully rolled her eyes, smiling. "Just as long as the man knows that's all it is going to be."

Josh returned her smile, placing a quick kiss on her lips.

Maya cupped Josh's cheeks deepening the kiss.

"Okay you two," Riley snapped throwing a pillow at the couple.

Maya laughed, pulling away.

"We can't help it you and your boyfriend are boring," Josh said, throwing the pillow back.

Maya narrowed her eyes in on her best friend when she saw the confused look come across her face. She didn't say anything deciding to wait until the two were alone to bring it up but didn't expect their moment to come so soon when Josh announced he was going to go take a quick shower. The two watched him go before Maya looked back over at her best friend. "What is going?"

Riley frowned, "What do you mean?"

"I saw that look when Josh called you and your boyfriend boring."

Riley rolled her eyes, "I know me and my boyfriend aren't boring."

"Then what is it?" Maya pushed.

Riley bit her lip, knowing her best friend wasn't going to back down, "Okay," she breathed out, getting more comfortable. "When you and Josh moved to New York for college, did it change things between the two of you?"

Maya sat back in thought, "No," she answered, hesitantly, not wanting to upset her friend just incase it wasn't the answer she was hoping for.

"What about the summer apart before you moved to New York?"

Once again Maya answered the same way. "No, when he was in New York and I was here it just made me miss him like crazy."

Riley nodded, "I remember."

"Is something going on with you and Marcello."

Riley swallowed, "When we were in Italy I saw myself marrying him then I came home..."

"You feel different?"

Riley slowly nodded. "I don't know if I want to go back to Italy. Being back home made me realize how much I missed being here and you guys. This is the happiest I felt in a long time."

Maya gave her a small smile, "Then maybe you should have a conversation with him."

Riley nodded, "Speaking of conversations," she began changing the subject off of her. "How did the conversation go between Josh and Sophie? Did they get it all solved?"

Maya sighed. "No."

"No?"

"We are still in the same spot as we were before."

Riley raised an eyebrow. It was now Riley's turn to question, "What's going on? Are you okay?"

Maya took in a deep breath, before letting it out slow. "I can't shake this feeling and it is making me feel self-conscious," she admitted. "It's not that I don't know Josh loves me or isn't doing what he thinks is best because I do but I hate what Sophie is doing and I am scared she will ruin my marriage and family."

Maya swallowed, trying to pace her breathing because admitting her fears out loud didn't make the sinking feeling go away instead it just made it stronger.

I hope you enjoyed. Please leave me a review with your thoughts and predictions. I love them and they keep me wanting to write.
