Chapter Sixteen

Maya glanced back and forth between the mother and son down to their suitcase back up at them. "Come in," she told them after a dreadful moment of silence between the three adults and young child, shocking her husband.

Josh looked over at his wife, questioning her, as Sophie and Hunter entered their home. Maya giving him a simple little shrug and slight smile. "I'll get it," he told Sophie before he grabbed her suitcase and shut the door behind them

"I'm sorry to just show up-"

"Don't worry about it," Maya cut Sophie off as she led them to the living room. "Are you guys hungry we can order pizza or do you want anything to drink?" she asked.

"I think we are fine," Sophie answered, glancing down at her son to see it was the right answer who just nod staring up at his mother. "We stopped for burgers, fries and a chocolate milkshake before coming over."

Hearing a chocolate milkshake made Maya's mouth water, but she pushed aside her craving before it became all she could think about and try to stay on track with what was happening. She looked over at Hunter and knew she needed to get him settled in for the night. It was starting to get late. "Josh, why don't you show Hunter to the guest bedroom and maybe hook up one your game systems so he has something to play with before he goes to bed."

Josh frowned, not liking the thought of leaving his wife alone with Sophie. He kept his eyes on his wife until she gave him slight nod and a small reassuring smile that she would be fine. "Yeah, come on, buddy."

The two women watched them leave before Maya looked back over at Sophie. The two remained quiet before Maya finally decided to break the silence again.

"We only have one guest bedroom you guys can stay in. It only has full size bed in it and I put fresh sheets-"

"Its fine," Sophie smiled.

Maya nodded, swallowing, as she glanced around her living room.

"I'm really sorry to show up like this," Sophie apologized again.

Maya shrugged, "It's okay. You don't have to keep apologizing."

Sophie sighed. "I just can't believe this is happening."

Maya bit her lip as she looked over at the other woman. Sophie looked sad but not devastated. "Do you want to talk about it?"

Sophie shrugged, taking in a deep breath before letting it out slowly. "I don't know what happened. I don't know why Lucas had this big change of heart. Everything was great between us."

Maya pressed her lips together, listening to Sophie's words. She glanced up at Josh who had entered back in the room in time to hear Sophie's answer, both gave a knowing look to each other. They knew what or they should say who changed Lucas's heart.

"I'm sure whatever is happening you'll figure it all out," Maya said, quietly as Josh took a seat next to Maya.

Sophie gave them a small smile. "I think I want to call it a night. It's been a long day."

Maya nodded, before letting Josh help her up. The three walked to up the stairs with her and Josh showing Sophie where the bathroom was and to the guest room. Josh and Maya both said a quick goodnight to Hunter and Sophie before entering in their own bedroom.

Once their bedroom door was closed. Josh stopped Maya and bent down to be eye level with her, "Are you sure you're okay with this?"

Maya looked into her husband's eye glancing away for a second before looking back into his eyes.

"Are you sure you're okay?" he asked again.

Maya swallowed before nodding, "I'm fine. I'm not going to leave Hunter and Sophie out on the streets."

Josh nodded, taking Maya's hand into his and leading her to their bed. "I just want to make sure you are okay," he told her gently, once the two were comfortable in their bed.

Maya gave him a small reassuring smile as she laid her head on her husband's chest. "It's not ideal but we both know why."

Josh nodded again, playing with Maya's hair. "I say we stay out of this as much as we can. I don't want in on Riley and Lucas and Sophie's mess."

Maya nodded in agreement, she glanced up at her husband. "Hopefully she will only be here for a couple of days and her and Lucas can figure it out or she can figure out what she wants to do next."

"Yeah," Josh agreed, taking one of her hand into his. "I just want to make sure you are okay if it's too much tell me. There are hotels Sophie can stay in and figure things out."

Maya smiled, knowing her husband wanted her to be happy and okay. "I'm fine and if she outstays her welcome you'll be the first to know."

Josh returned her smile, placing a quick kiss on her lips.

"You know?"

Josh raised an eyebrow.

"I really want a chocolate milkshake."

Josh chuckled, "Don't worry, I already placed a door dashed order for one."

Maya's mouth dropped opened, "No you didn't."

"I did," Josh smirked as he reached over to show his phone with the dasher's map on it.

A huge smile came to Maya's face.

"I know my wife and I knew when you heard chocolate shake you were going to want one."

The smile stayed on Maya's face as her eyes stayed on the phone until she looked up at her husband. "I love you."

Josh chuckled, "I love you more."

Maya sat alone in the kitchen the next morning grading papers when she looked up to see a hesitant Hunter standing in the doorway. She gave him a small smile. "Hey," she greeted.

"Hey," he greeted back, quietly. "My mom is still asleep."

Maya nodded, "That's okay. Are you hungry? Do want some cereal for breakfast?"

The small boy nodded as his answer before walking fully into the kitchen taking a seat at the table as Maya stood up to fix the young boy breakfast. She knew this wasn't the healthiest breakfast but it would do as she held up the two cereal options they had making him point to the one. She smiled putting the other box back before putting a piece of bread in the toaster and grabbing a bowl, milk and banana to make his quick breakfast. Once everything was finished she put the bowl of cereal, toast with light butter and banana in front of Hunter causing him to instantly start to digging in. Maya smiled, making him a glass of orange juice and her a cup of decaf coffee before joining him.

"So any big plans today with your friends today?" she asked as she sat back down across from him, knowing the little boy loved spending time with his friends.

Hunter shrugged, "Probably not. They are all going to the batting cage with their dads and then getting their costumes for Halloween," he answered as he took a bite of his cereal.

Maya felt the pain of her childhood hitting her like bricks at Hunter's answerer. Her heart broke for him remembering her childhood and how she felt left out before Shawn came along.

"Lucas usually comes but he can't so Momma said she'll take me to get my costume later."

Maya nodded as her eyes stayed on the innocent boy eating his cereal. "If you want maybe Josh can go with you to the batting cage and costume shopping?"

He looked up at Maya with wide happy eyes. "Do you think Coach will?"

Maya gave him a small smile, "I think he would love to."

The young boy nodded, smiling as he went back to eating his cereal and Maya went back to grading.

"When's your baby coming?"

Maya looked up into his curious eyes. "She is coming around Christmas."

Hunter raised his eyebrows and his eyes went wide, "She better come before Christmas if she wants Santa to bring her presents."

Maya chuckled, nodding, "You're right or maybe she'll wait and let Santa will bring her."

Hunter shook his head, "Santa doesn't bring babies."

It was Maya's turns to raise her eyebrow. "No?"

"No," he confirmed. "I asked for a baby sister and I couldn't get one because Santa doesn't bring babies but Momma said maybe one day I'll have one."

Maya felt her heart warm up and a small smile come to her face.

"Do you think she will play baseball?"

"Maybe," she answered, swallowing, as much as she tried to stop herself she still felt a pang of disappointment of not giving Josh a boy start to creep back up.

"I think she will," Hunter said, proudly. "Coach will teach her and I bet she is going to be really good."

Maya felt another small smile come to her face and the disappointment start to disappear. Maya watched the little boy dig back into his cereal reminding herself it wasn't this little boy's fault what was happening in their worlds. He deserves a father in his in life.

Maya sat against her headboard, not able to stop the tears rolling down her cheeks at the thought of her conversation with Hunter from this morning. Hunter deserved a loving father. He deserves someone like Josh in his life like she got with Shawn. She glanced down at her belly, resting her hand as she felt her daughter's slight kick. "You're so lucky baby girl."

Josh walked into their bedroom catching his wife in tears. He held up his pointer finger, "Hormones or did I do something wrong and I need to figure it out what I did?"

Maya chuckled, shaking her head. "I feel so bad."

Josh frowned, taking a seat next to his wife. "Okay so this hormones?"

Maya shook her head, "No. This is about Hunter."

Josh raised an eyebrow, surprised to hear his wife mention Hunter.

"You should have heard him this morning. My heart broke and I went back to my childhood before I had Shawn and then he was talking about wanting a little sister."

Josh took Maya's hand into his as Maya stared into his eyes.

"We have to put a stop this Josh. He deserves to have a father or father figure in his life. It's not fair to him and our baby is going to be here soon and it's not going to be fair to her if this is still going on and affecting our worlds. I would like to know before she comes. I need to the truth. This is has been going on for too long and Sophie hasn't made one step in telling Hunter or making arrangements to get you into his life. It's not fair. We need to go talk to a lawyer and see what we can do. We don't even have to tell Sophie right now but we can start taking steps on our own to start moving this along. We have to for Hunter and Violet."
