Chapter Six
Maya sat at the kitchen tabled dressed in her comfy pajamas and plush robe with house slippers on her feet. By the way she was dressed you would think it was a cold winter morning instead of a hot summer one but because she blast the air making her house a chill one it felt like a cold winter morning which she loved. She sat in silence, drinking her decaf coffee as she listened to the birds chirping outside her kitchen's window. There was something about sitting in silence besides the sound of the birds and drinking a warm cup of coffee that soothed her.
She made sure to wake up extra early to beat everyone up to get downstairs and make her coffee before her in-laws picked up on her not drinking any coffee. She thanked the lucky stars that her morning sickness didn't hold her back today. She made her cup to her liking before making a pot of the good stuff. She couldn't wait to get this baby out of her to go back to drinking regular coffee but until then she enjoyed her decaf. She knew today was going to be a crazy day with Sophie, Lucas and Hunter coming over for a grill out. She prayed everything would go over well and they would just come and go. She sat in silence for a few more minutes before her smiling mother-in-law joined her. Maya returned her mother-in-law's smile as she came into the kitchen.
"You'll have to tell your parents we are sorry we missed them this weekend," Amy said, making conversation after the two greet each other as she started to make herself a cup of coffee.
Maya nodded, "I will," she told her but deep down thankful her parents were out of town this weekend. She hasn't really talked to or stepped into her parents house since walking out on them after hearing her mother's words that still stung and hurt. She knew her mother was wrong and Josh loved her just as much as she loved Josh. She shook the memory off and her thoughts because the last thing she needed was to have an emotional breakdown in front of her mother-in-law.
"Since it is just the two of us what is really going on with Josh and this Sophie mess?" Amy asked, getting straight to the point as she refilled Maya cup of coffee before taking a seat across from Maya.
Maya looked down at her cup of coffee kissing her good cup of coffee away but thanked her mother-in-law anyway and found herself praying she could keep her hormones in check and her tears at bay. She shrugged, shaking her head. "He just goes a long with whatever Sophie says."
"What about you? What are you saying?"
Maya bit her lip, not wanting to cry. "I can't really say anything," she admitted, softly. "When I do it causes an argument and I don't want to argue."
Amy nodded, understanding. "Well, I think my son is being an idiot," she told her, getting a small smile out of Maya. "I think we need answers. I understand Sophie wanting a father for her child. Every mother wants the best for their child. It's something you'll understand when you become a mother. There is a connection you feel with your child that will make you do anything for it."
Maya pressed her lips together, hearing more words about how she will feel once she becomes a mother.
"But I don't believe he is my grandson and if Josh had half of a brain he would want proof," she continued, bringing her coffee cup up to take a drink.
The two dropped their conversation as Josh made his appearance.
"Morning," he greeted, instantly going over and kissing Maya's cheek. He would touch her stomach to greet his baby but knew it would give it away and cause unwanted attention. Maya was clear she didn't want to tell anyone just yet.
"Speaking of the idiot," Amy muttered getting a giggle out of Maya and a confused glare out of Josh.
"We were just talking," she shrugged.
"Only good things I hope."
"Of course," she gave her son a huge fake smile.
Josh rolled his eyes before going and making his own cup of coffee.
"By the look on your face you know what we are talkin-"
"Ma!" Josh cut off his mother not wanting to hear it, and taking a huge drink of his coffee before sitting down next to Maya. "We got it under control."
Amy shrugged her shoulder again, not convinced, "If you say so."
"We do!"
Maya swallowed at Josh's words as she looked back and forth between the two.
"Look Ma, we can't do anything to upset Sophie," Josh continued, taking Maya's hand into his. "She is the one in control right now. She can take off and I'll never get to see him again. I've already missed out on too much of his life. We have to take Sophie's lead."
"So how long are you going to let her lead?"
Josh swallowed, "Until I know it's time."

"We will have to do this again."
Maya gave her usual fake friendly smile she always gave Sophie at her words as her and Josh walked the three out. She was exhausted and happy to see the three go. She was ready to get in her pajamas and curl up in a warm blanket and cuddle with her husband. Today went as she planned. Lucas, Sophie and Hunter came over, the guys played baseball in the backyard as the women watched on, they ate dinner, hung out a little more before Amy and Alan called it a night. Everyone stayed on their best behavior even Amy and Sophie and now Maya was happily seeing them on their way out. "Yea-" she began but stopped at the sound of the door bell. She frowned looking over at Josh, wondering who would be at their house so late.
Josh shrugged, answering the door.
"Guess who?"
Maya's mouth dropped opened before she ran over and hugged her best friend. "What are you doing here?"
"I had to come and surprise you," Riley said, when she pulled away. She went to hug her uncle and was surprised to see the three weren't alone.
"Hi," she greeted the others.
"Riley."
"Lucas."
The two shared a look. "Hmm, this is my fiancé, Sophie, and this Hunter," Lucas introduced, knowing Riley already most likely knew the details from Maya and felt no need to go into further.
"Hi, it's nice to meet you guys."
"You too," Sophie smiled.
The five adults went in to an awkward silence.
"Why don't you three go out?" Lucas suggested, nodding between the three women. "I'll keep Hunter," he offered, making a huge smile come to Sophie's face. He knew this was the perfect opportunity for Sophie to make friends. "Sophie has been wanting to make new friends."
Maya knew if looks could kill Lucas would be dead at the look Josh was giving him. She was thankful he was behind everyone and no one could see the look he was giving.
"Yeah, it will be so much fun," Sophie exclaimed. "Lucas took me to this little hole in the wall bar we can go to."
Riley's eyes lit up at the suggestion as Maya looked like a deer caught in a headlight.
"Actually Maya has work in the morning and my parents are here," Josh answered, walking over to stand next to his wife, knowing the last place his pregnant wife needed to be was at a bar.
"Oh come on!" Riley whined. "I'm in town, and Grandma and Grandpa won't mind! Maya's a school teacher and it's summer."
Maya looked over at Riley, "I'm teaching an art summer class."
Riley pouted her lips out, looking like she was about to have tantrum a two year old would have, "Why are you teaching summer school? And I'm in town for only a short time," she continued to whine.
Maya sighed. She didn't want to say she was teaching summer school because she planned to only work a semester this school year and planned on not returning to teaching until the next school year after that because of the baby. She looked at Riley's begging eyes and pleading face. "Fine," she finally agreed, causing Riley to cheer as Josh went to object but Maya stopped him by placing a hand on his shoulder. "But only for a bit and I'll be the designated driver. I have to get up early tomorrow," she told them, before leading Josh away from everyone.
"Are you crazy?" Josh whispered, harshly.
"Josh, it's okay," Maya smiled. "I'll be fine. I'll let them have a couple of drinks then be home."
Josh still didn't look happy.
"I'll be fine," she eased.
Josh sighed, looking down at his wife. "Fine."

"At least Lucas's is good in bed," Riley shrugged.
Sophie's eyes went wide as Maya winces and face palmed at Riley's admission. Both Sophie and Riley were already feeling the affects of their alcohol and Maya had no clue how they got on this conversation.
"Sorry. One time. Teenage drunken sex."
Sophie shook her head, "I can't believe I'm getting drunk with two girls who both have been with my fiancé."
Maya shook her head, "I've never been with Lucas in that way. We kissed and had heated make out sessions but we never had sex."
Sophie's eyes went wide again, "Wait but didn't you cheat on Lucas with Josh?"
Maya sighed, wondering what exactly Lucas told Sophie about the past. "Lucas believes I cheated on him with Josh but I didn't. I broke up with Lucas before anything happened between Josh and I."
"So if you got with Josh in high school then Josh is the only guy you've been with?"
Maya nodded, taking a sip of her lemon water.
Sophie raised her eyebrows, "So...never any wild nights in college?"
Maya shook her head. "I was with Josh."
"I can't imagine being with only one guy," she said, taking another shot before chasing it down with her beer.
"Yeah," Riley agreed, making Maya roll her eyes never in million years did she think she would be outcast with her best friend at her side.
"Just so you know Josh was good in bed."
Maya's stomach turned as Riley scrunched her face up "Eww that's my uncle."
Sophie laughed, "Sorry I forgot about the connection between you and Josh."
"What about you?" Riley asked. "Any wild nights?"
"I had my wild ones before Hunter. Hunter calmed me down."
Riley nodded, "I bet having a baby young made you calm down."
"It does. You want to know what is crazy?" Sophie asked, taking a huge gulp of her beer as she looked over at Maya.
"I don't know what?" Maya answered, not really caring but pretending she did and hoping it wasn't something she didn't want to hear.
"When you and Josh got together I was pregnant with his kid."
Once again Maya felt sick to her stomach.
"Have you two talked kids?"
"Of course they have," Riley answered for Maya before she could answer herself, sucking on the lime after downing her shot of tequila. "Maya and Josh are planners and stick to their plans. If I remember correctly, you and Josh were planning on getting pregnant this year? I bet that's now changed, huh?" she said, nodding her head towards Sophie.
Maya could feel Sophie's eyes on her waiting for her to answer. "We haven't really talked about it," she shrugged, playing with her straw in her drink.
"Why not?"
Maya stopped looking over at her best friend. She never wanted to kill her best friend more than she did at that exact moment.
"I think it's a good thing if you two changed your plans," Sophie put in her two cents. "Josh has Hunter now. He needs to focus on him and not a new baby. It would be a bit much."
"That's true," Riley agreed. "You and Josh shouldn't add a baby into the mix right now."
Maya felt the tears forming. She slowly nodded, "Yeah," she bit her lip, "I'm going to go to the bathroom. I'll be back," she told them, but both girls were too busy being served their drinks to notice. She dapped her tears before they could fall as she stared at herself in the small bathroom's mirror. She couldn't stop herself from pulling out her cellphone and didn't even realize she had until she heard his voice greeting her.
"Hey."
"What's wrong?"
Maya closed her eyes, hating he instantly could tell something was wrong with her just at the sound of her voice. She bit her lip, and fought back tears. "I should have came up with an excuse and not have came out tonight."
"What happened? Do you need me to come and get you?"
Maya smiled at the concern in Josh's voice and could hear him standing up and ready to get out the door as soon as she gave him the go ahead. "Josh I'm the designated driver."
"So? They can find their own way home."
Maya chuckled, "No, it's okay. You can sit back down and relax. Hearing your voice made me feel better."
"Are you sure? I'm standing at the door."
Maya smiled again, "I know you are. Go back and relax. I'll be home in a bit."
"I'm only turning around if you are sure."
"I'm sure."
She listened to him sigh, but could hear he was back on the couch.
"I miss you."
Maya pressed her lips together, trying to stop her smile from becoming wider. "I miss you too, but I'll be home soon."
"Good. I don't want to go to bed without you."
Maya rolled her eyes, smiling. "I'm sure you don't."
"Well can you blame me?"
"No," she said, honestly. She hated the few nights she had gone to bed without Josh.
"I like you safe in my arms."
Maya's heart melted at his words. "Me too."
"I love you."
Maya's heart melted even more at the tone of his voice. "I love you too."
"Now get back out there and end your night so you can get back home."
Maya chuckled. "Okay. I'll be home soon."
"Good. I'll see you soon. Love you."
"Love you too."
Maya hung up her phone before walking out of the bathroom back to the table with the two drunk girls ready to make them call it a night so she could get back home to the comfort with her husband. She heard the two cracking up laughing as she took her seat.
"You want to know what is so funny?" Riley asked, cracking up and having a hard time breathing let alone getting her words out.
"What?" Maya asked, softly, once again not really caring but having to pretend to and annoyed both girls were drunk but also happy because it perfect timing to call it a night.
"Sophie thinks your pregnant."
Maya's stomach dropped as Sophie grinned shrugging as she drank her beer.
"Don't worry!" Riley tried to ease Maya's worries. "We know you're not! I said there is no way because you would tell me as soon as you peed on a stick."
Maya nodded, she could feel Sophie's eyes on her as Riley laughed so hard she rested her head on the table.
"I think it's time to call it a night."
