Chapter Seven
A month.
A whole month has passed since her in-laws visit, the night out at the bar, and if her world hasn't already been turned upside down enough the past month had been hell for her. She still couldn't fully wrap her head around what was happening. You would think she would start to adjust to the addition of Hunter and Sophie in her life by now but instead it still hurt and drove her crazy. It didn't help Riley decided to extend her stay until her boyfriend's planned visit which was thankfully next week because no matter how hurt, sick, tired, and hormonal she was feeling she had to pretend she was happy and okay.
Maya ran her hand along one of the white wooden cribs. She sighed after looking at the time on her phone.
Josh wasn't coming.
He was almost an hour late. She forced herself to not stress. She was sure he had a good excuse and they still had plenty of time to get baby things and today was only to get an idea of what they wanted, but it still hurt because this wasn't the first time he had stood her up since Hunter and Sophie had entered their world. Today it was at the baby boutique and she reminded herself it was just the baby boutique, just like before it was just lunch at her favorite restaurant where he left her sitting for over thirty minutes by herself before he finally called to say he couldn't make it and the time before that it was just dinner she had prepared where she fell asleep on the couch waiting for him to get home. Ever since her in-laws visit and the night at the bar Sophie had become very needy with Josh. She constantly called and had Josh do things when it came to Hunter. Things like hanging something up in Hunter's room that she knew Lucas could do but instead Sophie called Josh using the excuse of it being for Hunter and insistent he be the one since he was Hunter's father.
"Maya."
Maya's froze and her eyes went wide when she turned to see Lucas standing in the store's doorway and now headed in her direction.
"I thought that was you."
Maya slowly nodded, giving him a nervous smile, not believing she had been caught at the baby boutique. She knew she had to look like a deer caught in a headlight.
"What are you doing in this store?" he asked, looking around at all the baby items.
Maya swallowed, looking at him with wide eyes as she try to think of an excuse but by the look on his face she knew he was able to read her.
"You're pregnant," he stated a little surprised.
"Oh, hmm," Maya went to lie but found herself slowly nodding again, knowing there was no point in denying it. Baggy clothing wouldn't always be able to hide her growing bump forever.
'Wow," Lucas breathed out. "I guess I owe you a congratulations."
Maya looked at Lucas surprised to hear someone actually congratulate her knowing the situation she was in before giving him a small smile. "Thank you," she murmured.
A sales lady who she had asked her more than a serval times if she needed help that Maya kept declining before finally telling the woman she was waiting for her husband's arrival came up to the two, "I see your husband finally showed up," she smiled, giving Maya a wink as she passed by.
Maya's heart sunk. Her husband wasn't there. He didn't finally show up. Maya watched her walk away.
"It's worrisome, isn't it?"
Maya was caught off guard by Lucas's words. "What do you mean?"
"Sophie and Josh," Lucas specified at Maya's confusion. "We are their significant others but the two are always together."
"Because of Hunter," Maya clarified.
Lucas nodded, "I feel left behind or push to the side. Whatever you want to call it."
"Where are you going with this Lucas?"
"I'm scared something is going to happen."
Maya raised an eyebrow. "I don't know what is going on in your relationship but I trust Josh."
"They are probably together right now," Lucas pointed out. "When he was suppose to be here with you."
Maya's heart sunk at the mention of them being together but she glared at her ex-boyfriend. "I have nothing to worry about. I know where Josh stands."
"But yet he's not here like he is suppose to be."
"Don't talk about my husband like that."
"Like what? Look I'm in the same boat as you, Maya. You would be a fool to not start worrying. I've been here before, remember?" he reminded her, making Maya's heart sink further. "I'm pretty sure you reassured me multiple times nothing was happening when I knew I was losing you and the next thing I knew you were in his arms."
Maya shook her head. "This is different. I trust Josh."
Lucas stared at Maya before slowly nodding. "I hope you are right."
"I am."
Lucas nodded again.
Maya swallowed, glancing around the boutique as the two stood awkwardly. "Lucas," she began softly, grabbing his attention. "Can you not tell anyone? About my baby."
Lucas eyed her before nodding. "Sure. Don't worry. Your secret is safe with me," he promised.

"Can you imagine how scary it had to be to know you are going to raise a baby on your own?
Maya rolled her eyes from her seat on the couch, hearing her best friend's voice from the kitchen. She was still shaken up from her conversation with Lucas earlier in the day and the last thing she wanted to hear was her best friend praising Sophie. Josh showed up not long after she said her goodbye to Lucas and explained he was running late because of work and not because of Sophie. She trusted Josh and knows she has nothing to worry about even if they are a little rocky right now.
"I mean she went in knowing she was going to be a single mom and bring this little baby into the world and know she wasn't going to have it's father at her side. Can you imagine?"
Maya sighed, wishing Riley would drop the conversation. For some odd reason Riley had taken a liking to Sophie. "No," she finally managed to get out when Riley made her way out of the kitchen with two fresh lemonade drinks in her hands.
"I give Sophie credit. I don't know what I would have done if I found out I was pregnant and then go to find the father to tell him to only find out he moved out of state to better his life. It was so selfless of her to decide to raise the baby on her own so Josh can get his life together and not have to worry about a baby. Just think you and Josh probably wouldn't be together if Sophie would have told Josh," Riley continued, as she handed Maya her drink and got comfy on the couch next to her.
Maya's heart sunk for what had to be the hundredth time just that day at the thought but knowing how she felt even back then she wouldn't have walked away from Josh even with a baby in the picture. She knows people would have thought she was crazy for sticking with a guy who has a baby on the way with another girl being so young, but Josh was and is worth it. They would have somehow made it work. Maya shook her head, defending her relationship, "No, Josh and I would have been together no matter what."
Riley raised an eyebrow. "You think?"
"I don't think. I know," she said, confidently. "I wouldn't have walked away from Josh."
"If you say so," Riley shrugged, not so sure, taking a sip of her drink. "Perfection."
Maya rolled her eyes again before taking a sip of her own drink and spitting it out. "Riley!"
"What?" Riley asked innocently, smiling. "I just made the drinks better."
"By spiking them?"
"I knew if I told you you would make some lame excuse to why you can't drink like you have the entire time I've been here. You don't have work tomorrow. It's Friday-wait don't tell me you decided to teach something on Saturdays now?"
Maya shook her head, glaring at her best friend. "No. I don't teach on Saturday."
"Then what's the problem?" Riley asked. "You have no excuse," she grinned, bringing her drink up to her lips for a big gulp. "And this tastes magical."
Maya shook her head, trying to keep her anger and tears at bay. The last thing she wanted to do is hurt her baby or break down at the thought of hurting her baby and she knew she was already stressing her poor baby out. "You had no right spiking my drink."
"Oh my god, Maya, calm down. It's not a big deal."
"It is a big deal!"
"You're overreacting."
"No I'm not!"
"Yes you are."
"No I'm not and I'll show you why," Maya said, standing up causing Riley to be confused until Maya tighten Josh's loose t-shirt to reveal her growing baby bump making Riley's eyes go wide and her mouth drop open.
"Oh my god," Riley breathed out as she sat her drink down, covering her mouth and her tears started to form. "Is that what I think it is. Is that a baby bump? Are you pregnant?"
Maya slowly nodded, feeling her own tears form.
Riley lifted a shaky hand to touch Maya's forming stomach. "You have the most beautiful baby bump ever."
Maya chuckled as she looked down at her best friend's hand.
"So you and Josh were sticking to your plans," Riley exclaimed through her tears.
Maya nodded.
"You didn't call me when you peed on the stick.
Maya found herself chuckling again as she shook her head at her best friend's words. "I wanted to tell you, but I wanted Josh to be the first to know and then all of this happened and I don't know."
Riley took her eyes off of her best friend's bump to look up at her with questioning eyes.
Maya sighed. "I just wanted everything to be perfect."
Riley nodded. "It's far from perfect?"
It was Maya turn to nod.
"Maya" Riley sighed.
"I know. I'm being dumb. It's just a lot. You know? I don't want people to look at me with sympathy or think I'm bringing a baby into the world at the wrong time. I was pregnant before any of this mess started."
"Maya, it may not be how you imagined it but your having a baby."
"I'm having a baby," Maya nodded, and for the second time in one day Maya found herself saying "But please keep this a secret. I know I'm being dumb but I'm not ready yet and I don't want the added stress right now."
Riley nodded, giving her a small smile. "I will. Do you know if it is a boy or girl?"
Maya shook her head, "At the next appointment we should be able to find out."
"Oh God, Josh is going to flip if it isn't a boy. We all know of his dream to have a little baseball team. Please have a gender reveal party so I can see his face if it's a girl."
Maya went to reply but stopped at the sound of the backdoor opening.
"Dinner's here!"
Both girls smiled at the sound of Josh's voice coming from the kitchen.
"Speaking of the devil himself."
"Finally!" Maya yelled as she and Riley made their way into the kitchen.
"Ha ha ha, very funny. I can't help you picked the busy restaurant and I had to stop over Sophie's because Hunter forgot his glove in my car."
Maya swallowed hard at the mention of Sophie and Hunter but quickly shrugged it off not letting either of them noticed as both of them started emptying out the bags and spreading their dinner across the table.
"I heard you've been busy making that baseball team you've always wanted."
Josh furrowed his eyebrows in, confused, as he looked over his shoulder at his grinning niece before she took a huge bite of her teriyaki chicken stick.
"Don't look at me like that. You impregnated my best friend."
Josh looked over at Maya shocked.
Maya shrugged as she poured her drink out in the sink and walked to the fridge to grab two water bottles, knowing Josh would not be happy with his niece if he tasted the lemonade.
"You told her," Josh said, amazed Maya was finally opened to the idea of telling people they were having a baby.
"Yes! She told me. Now I'm wondering how many other people I'm going to find out you've impregnated this year," she laughed.
Maya felt her heart sink again and Josh glared over in his niece's direction.
Riley looked up and knew her joke didn't go over well. "Oops. Sorry."
Maya shook her head, plastering a fake smile as she try to compose herself.
"There isn't going to be anymore," Josh eased, walking over to his wife. "I may have slept around in my teenage days before you but my Ma taught me to protect myself. I always wore protection and Maya can even back that up."
Maya looked up at Josh's words. She could back him up on it. The two always wore protection until they decided to try for a baby.
"I don't know what happened with Sophie. It must have been one of those rare cases where the protection failed us."
"At least you got Hunter out of it."
"Yeah," Josh smiled. "I got Hunter out of it."
