Chapter Twenty

"As doctors, patients are always telling us how they'd do our jobs. Just stitch me up, slap a band-aid on it and send me home. It's easy to suggest a quick solution, when you don't know much about the problem or you don't understand the underlying cause or just how deep the wound is. The first step toward a real cure is to know exactly what the disease is to begin with. But that's not what people want to hear. We're supposed to forget the past that led us here, ignore the future complications that might arise and go for the quick fix. As doctors, as friends, as human beings, we all try to do the best we can. But the world is full of unexpected twists and turns. And just when you've gotten the lay of the land, the ground underneath you shifts. And knocks you off your feet. If you're lucky, you'll end up with nothing more than a flesh wound, something a band-aid will cover. But, some wounds are deeper than they first appear and require more than just a quick fix. With some wounds, you have to rip off the band-aid, let them breathe, and give them time to heal"

"if i told you that i loved you. tell me, what would you say?"

Meredith, Cristina, Lucy, Izzie and Holly were tailing George and Bailey who had her baby in a carrier. Holly didn't tune into their conversation because she was too busy staring at George. "George and Burke are bonding", Cristina said. "Meredith, please apologize to George again because things can't stay like this". Alex joined them and kissed Lucy on the cheek. "Hey", he smiled. "Hey", she smiled back. "You two are gross", Cristina complained. "I liked it better when you hated him".

After visiting Denny and letting Alex and Izzie stay to monitor him, Bailey and her remaining interns followed Addison into Mrs Gibson's room. "This is Mrs Gibson", Addison said. "Her membranes ruptured prematurely at 28 weeks. She's confined to bed rest". "I would like to have the baby now through a C section", Mrs Gibson said. "I want your blood work before we make any further decisions", Addison said. "I'm glad you have taken the case, Dr Montgomery Shepherd", Mr Gibson said. "I think that you resemble a young Catherine Deneuve". Lucy snorted and Addison glared at her. "Thank you, I'm flattered", Addison said, before awkwardly leaving the room.

"Kepner, Grey, O'Malley, pit", Addison ordered.

While waiting for the elevator, the three interns stood in silence. "You're gonna have to talk to me at some point", George said to Holly. "I'm gonna take the stairs", she decided.

Meredith and Holly arrived in the ER, where the nurse showed them to a patient. The nurse opened a curtain. There was a man holding an ice pack to his groin, while his wife had a fork stuck in her neck.

Derek inspected Sylvia's neck. "Sylvia was giving me some special attention under the table at brunch", Kyle explained. "While I was busy, a shock went through my body", Sylvia said.

"She clenched. I panicked and instinctively grabbed the fork"

"You did good by not pulling it out, Sylvia", Holly said. "We'll do an x-ray to make sure no major vessels or nerves were compromised", Derek said. "Your injury was checked out, Kyle. It's just bruising. I want to know what caused the clenching". "I don't have a history of seizures", Sylvia said. "It may have something to do with her aneurysm", Kyle said. The doctors looked surprised. "There's no aneurysm on her chart", Derek said. "I was diagnosed six weeks ago, the doctors said it was inoperable", Sylvia said. "That's why we're in Seattle. I wanted to see the Space Needle". "Dr Grey, Dr Kepner, schedule an MRI", Derek said.

George and Lucy were in the ER when Lucy and Callie noticed each other. Callie approached her. "Hey, still interested in ortho?" Callie asked. "You bet", Lucy answered.

"Wanna see something cool?"

They looked at an ugly-looking hand. Callie and Lucy smirked. "It happened at hockey practice", Heath said. "I didn't have my glove on because I was drinking from the goalie's water bottle. Then this asshat crashed into the net, my hand caught in the net, and I heard big pops". The doctors studied the scan. "What do you see, Shepherd?" Callie asked. "Um, a PIP dislocation and uh, multiple fractures", Lucy said.

"Excellent work"

"It's just a finger", Heath said. "I just want you guys to put it in a splint, because I've got a really big game this afternoon".

Holly prepared to pull the fork out of Sylvia's neck. "Have you ever done this before, Dr Kepner?" Sylvia asked. "Pulled a fork out of somebody's neck". "No, m'am", Holly said.

"Kyle, honey, can you talk so I'm distracted"

He started talking about their planned trip to Paris. Holly pulled the fork out and showed Sylvia. "I didn't feel a thing", Sylvia said. "I want to live my life. I want to live a crazy life while I still can". "A second opinion wouldn't hurt", Meredith said from the corner of the room.

"It would be the fourth. I don't want to be devastated all over again when Dr Shepherd says there's nothing he can do. I want to go to Paris"

"I do too but I don't want to wonder all the time if we should've listened to the doctors", Kyle said. They all started laughing. Meredith caught Holly's eye and Holly immediately stopped laughing and looked away.

Alex sat with Denny. "So you and Izzie a thing?" Denny asked. "No, I have a girlfriend", Alex replied, smiling at the thought of Lucy.

"I'm very happy for you. Cuz I like Izzie"

"I'm in love with her"

"Tell her"

"I can't"

"Why not?"

"She'd run away screaming"

"You don't know unless you tell her"

Meredith pushed Sylvia in the wheelchair while Holly walked alongside them. "Stop the wheelchair", Sylvia said. "I can walk by myself". "The wheelchair is just protocol", Holly said.

"I want to feel my body move while it still can"

"You seem incredibly okay with your prognosis"

"I love it, because it woke me up. I've been sleepwalking for 15 years. I'm doing this MRI for Kyle because he's not ready to give up"

Meredith looked at Holly who looked back. "I can see where he's coming from", Meredith said.

"It doesn't hurt much", Heath said. "I can handle the pain and I want to play through the game. I want to play because there are college scouts coming. I could get a scholarship". "Cutting off the bandage means risking permanent damage", Callie said. "So there'll be no putting the finger in the glove today".

"This game is my whole future"

"There's nothing we can do"

He angrily stormed out. A few seconds later, his mother followed him.

Addison and Lucy ate lunch together. Addison was looking over Mrs Gibson's test results when her husband spotted them. "Ooh, Addie, look, your boyfriend's here", Lucy said. "Shut up", Addison snapped. He approached them. "Your wife doesn't have an infection so I can schedule a C section for this afternoon", Addison said. "I was planning on telling you after lunch". "I still think you look like a young Catherine Deneuve", he said. Lucy snickered. He sat down. "Okay, then, I'll leave you to it", Lucy said, getting up and leaving.

Izzie, Cristina, George were having lunch at another table when Lucy joined them. "Izzie, just take the baby", Cristina pleaded. "No", Izzie refused. "George, have you talked to Meredith?" "I'm done being asked about her", George replied. "And little red?" Cristina asked.

"Her too"

Meredith sat down with them, causing George to stand up and sit with Callie. "George annoys me so much at my apartment", Cristina complained. "George would still be our roommate if Meredith would apologise", Izzie said. "Meredith already apologised. George should apologise. He screwed Holly over. It's not all on Meredith", Lucy said. "It takes two to make a stupid sexual decision", Meredith said, frustrated. She got up and left. "I just want to go back to when we all got along", Izzie said. "I have to check on a patient". She got up and left as Alex approached the table. Alex sat down next to Lucy and gave her his jello. Little Tuck started crying and Cristina got up and left. "Lucy I-", Alex started. "You know, Callie, right? The ortho resident? She's becoming my mentor and it's amazing", Lucy smiled. "I wanna be the next ortho goddess and with her, I will be".

"I'm very happy for you"

"I'm happy for me too"

"Dr Shepherd is going to perform a double-barrel brain bypass", Holly explained. "I'm going to use two scalp arteries to redirect the blood flow in your brain around the aneurysm", Derek said. "It's a rare surgery. I've done it successfully once and watched it once. There's a risk that the aneurysm could rupture on the table". "No", Sylvia said. "We're leaving for Europe".

"I had a lunch date with Mr Gibson", Addison said to Lucy. "Addie, that wasn't a lunch date", Lucy said. "That man has a wife, and you have a husband. Don't have lunch with another man to distract yourself from the fact that Derek is treating you like crap. I may be biased but he's an asshat. Just talk to him, okay?"

"Hey, Shepherd", Callie said to Lucy. "I've scheduled Heath's surgery for tomorrow. You want in?" "Absolutely", Lucy said, ecstatic.

"Great. With me as your mentor, you're gonna make one hell of an orthopaedics surgeon"

"I know, I'm so excited"

Heath walked into the ER with a bloody bandage around his hand. "I played the game", he said. "I cut off my finger, but I saved it so you can sew it back on".

Callie and Lucy were in surgery. "Heath found out how to cut off his finger from the internet", Lucy said. "I respect his passion and the sacrifice he made for it", Callie said.

"He cut off his finger that would've healed perfectly in a few months"

"Sometimes you can't wait. He cut away the pain"

"It didn't end the pain, because there's always phantom pain if you cut it off"

"Wow, your ex must've done a number on you"

"Yeah, three surgeries and a move across the country to be exact"

"Heath, when you put your freshly severed finger into a bacteria-filled glove, you got a severe infection", Callie told Heath. "The internet didn't say anything about infection", Heath said. "The infection was caused by methicillin-resistant staph bacteria and it's spreading", Lucy said. "We're lucky if we can preserve enough muscle for you to have any hand function at all". "You must be wrong", Heath said. "Ronnie Lott, a former football player for the 49ers who had his finger amputated and continued to play afterwards".

"Sorry, but your hockey career is over"

Meredith exited the hospital when she spotted Holly sitting on a bench. She sat down beside her. "I didn't know", Meredith said. "I didn't know, and I'm sorry. You know why I didn't know? Because you and me, we don't talk. About anything. I didn't know that you were raped, and I'm so sorry. You're so strong and I never took the time to realise that. I love you, Holly". "Meredith-", Holly started.

"No, if you're gonna reject my apology don't say anything"

"Meredith, I love you too. You're my friend, you're my family, I love you. It's just, I trusted him, you know? But I will never make that mistake again. I used to think I wasn't strong or brave. But I am. I really am"

Meredith took Holly's hand and placed her head on her shoulder.

Lucy and Alex lay in her bed. Alex was wide awake thinking about telling her the three words that were on the tip of his tongue every time he looked at her. "Lucy, I love you", he whispered. She said nothing. He turned to look at her and saw that she was fast asleep. He groaned, kissed her forehead and turned around to go to sleep.
