Chapter Three
"Surgeons are control freaks. With a scalpel in your hand, you feel unstoppable. There's no fear, there's no pain. You're ten feet tall and bulletproof. And then you leave the OR. And all that perfection, all that beautiful control, falls to crap. No one likes to lose control, but as a surgeon there's nothing worse. It's a sign of weakness, of not being up to the task. And still there are times when it just gets away from you. When the world stops spinning and you realise that your shiny little scalpel isn't gonna save you. No matter how hard you fight it, you fail. And it's scary as hell. Except, if there's an upside to free-falling, it's the chance you give your friends to catch you".
"don't break the spell. it would be different and you know it will"
Meredith, Cristina and Lucy were jogging. Meredith was very energised but Cristina and Lucy were looking a little burned out. "Oh, you're stupid. Oh god. You're a stupid evil sadist", Cristina said to Meredith. "Endorphins are good, they elevate your mood", Meredith replied. "That's the thing, if I have to do this, I would rather be miserable", Lucy panted. Cristina and Lucy stopped running and Meredith began to run circles around them. "Is that meant to be motivating?" Lucy asked. "Syphilis penis", Meredith sneered. "Dirty mistress", Cristina said to Meredith. "Pregnant whore", Meredith replied. "Getting laid was a great idea. Definitely didn't face any consequences for that one", Lucy said sarcastically. They all collapsed to the floor.
George, Cristina, Lucy and Meredith watched Izzie and Alex. They were laughing and enjoying each other's company. "What is she doing?" Cristina asked. "She's hanging out with Alex", George said. "I think they might be friends.
"They can't be friends, that's gross", Lucy replied, glaring at the two.
"Make the lambs stop screaming"
"Once you get to know him, he's actually really sweet", Izzie defended. "Sweet?" Lucy questioned. "He tried to give me syphilis!"
"No he didn't. Every time we bring that up, you change the story"
"Let me be dramatic, god!"
"Hey, Meredith, do you seriously have the Ellis Grey surgical tapes", Alex asked Meredith. "You should come over and watch them", Izzie suggested. "Izzie, don't bring the devil to our house", Lucy whispered. "Oh yeah, if this were a hell dimension", Meredith remarked. Lucy snorted. "Do you have a thing for Alex?" Lucy asked Izzie. "No", Izzie replied. Lucy couldn't help but feel jealous.
Meredith, Cristina and Lucy walked a few paces behind Bailey. "You should tell Burke about the baby, he deserves to know", Lucy said to Cristina. "He could handle the finances", Meredith suggested.
"Oh, that's a way better idea, forget what I said"
"No", Cristina said. "Once this pregnancy is taken care of, Burke won't be a blip on my radar. He'll be a smudge". "Right", Meredith replied, sarcastically. "Leave the sarcasm up to me", Cristina said. "Really, it doesn't suit you". "She's right", Lucy agreed.
Alex and Lucy were walking through the stairwell. "So, you're friends with Izzie now?" Lucy said.
"Yeah, why, jealous?"
"No. You tried to give me syphilis"
"The way you phrase that is such bullshit. I didn't know"
"Whatever. I just thought it was weird that's all"
Lucy didn't realise until that moment how close they were standing. Their noses were practically touching. Alex looked like he was about to say something. Bailey opened the door. Lucy jumped away from Alex like he was on fire. "There's a surgical case coming from the pit", Bailey said. "It could be diverticulitis". They hurried after her.
"Meredith's mother has Alzheimer's and is at the hospital", George said.
"What?! Is Meredith okay?" Holly asked, her concerned voice made George smile.
"I don't know. I'll go check. Talk to you later"
"Okay, bye"
Lucy was coming down the stairs when Alex came up behind her. "Hey, you got an eyelash", Alex said. He reached up and wiped it off her face. He let his hand rest on her cheek. Lucy cleared her throat and turned her face away. George entered the room. "Can you help me with Ellis?" George asked them. "Oh, a standard exam? You did go to med school, right?" Alex sarcastically asked him. Lucy smacked Alex's arm before putting her arm around George's shoulders. "Did I mention she thinks I'm her ex-husband?" George said.
Ellis was going through papers in a drawer when Alex, Lucy and George entered the room. "Ellis", George greeted. "Thatcher", she warned angrily. Alex patted George on the chest. "No more interruptions, Thatch, you heard the doctor", Alex smirked. Lucy furrowed her eyebrows. "I'm Dr Alex Karev, big fan of your work", he said, introducing himself. "Well come on, let's scrub in", Ellis said.
"We will but it's a new hospital policy to examine you before surgery"
"That was a really smart idea, what you did there", Lucy said to Alex. "Thanks", he replied.
"Did you really mean it? When you said I was strong"
"Yes, of course. Did you?"
"Every word"
Bailey, Izzie and Lucy were transporting Cristina after she collapsed. Cristina pulled the oxygen mask off her face. "I'm seven weeks pregnant", she said, before putting it back on. "Go find Addison", Bailey said to Lucy. "Be discreet".
Lucy saw Richard, Addison and George on the stairs and ran over. "Addie, I need you", Lucy said. "Lucy, what's wrong?" Addison asked, concerned.
"Cristina's collapsed" George gave a concerned look.
"Why do you need me?"
Lucy gave her a look. "Cristina's pregnant?!" George exclaimed. "Shut up, George", Lucy snapped. "Come on, Addie".
Addison operated on Cristina. "Is she gonna be okay?" Lucy asked. "How attached was she to the pregnancy?" Addison asked.
"Not very"
Bailey stood watching over Cristina. "You must have another surgery to get to", Addison said to Bailey. "No, I'm fine right here", she replied, stroking Cristina's head.
Meredith and Lucy sat together in a darkened OR gallery. They contemplated everything that had happened that day.
Meredith and Alex walked together and talked about their patient.
"I still think it's nuts having major surgery so people can't tell how you're feeling"
"Really? You do?"
"Nah, I guess not. You could talk, you know, I mean if you need to"
"I'm fine"
"You've said that word so many times today, it doesn't even sound like a word anymore. I'm just saying you can talk to me cause, you know, even if I repeat every word you say no one around here likes me. They'll just call me a liar and move on"
"Lucy likes you. She'd never admit it but I know she does"
Alex genuinely smiled.
"You're blushing"
"Shut up"
He dropped his smile and Meredith turned around. Once she had, he continued smiling.
George and Meredith were at the nurse's station when Izzie and Lucy approached them. "How's Cristina?" Meredith asked. "She'll be in pain for a few days, other than that she'll be okay", Izzie said.
"I'm glad you guys were there for Cristina. About Alex?"
"I know, I know you guys hate him, fine"
"He's not that bad", Lucy muttered. Meredith smiled remembering her previous conversation with Alex. "Yeah we do but I just wanna say I believe you, that he's different once you get to know him", Meredith smiled. Izzie smiled. Lucy thought a lot about what Meredith had said.
Lucy and Alex stood in the doorway of a hospital room. "How can someone be so offensive and yet so charming all at the same time?" Lucy asked him. She moved closer to him, they were separated by less than a foot. "It's an art form", he replied, smirking. They both smiled. Lucy walked away, Alex's eyes trailed after her as she walked away.
Meredith, Alex, Lucy, Izzie and George stood around Cristina's bed watching her sleep peacefully. Lucy stared at Alex before turning away just in time for him to start staring at her.
