Chapter Six

"In general, people can be categorized in one of two ways- those who love surprises and those who don't. I don't. I've never met a person that enjoys a surprise, because as surgeons, we like to be in the know. We have to be in the know, because when we aren't, people die and lawsuits happen. Am I rambling? I think I'm rambling. Okay, so point, actually, and I do have one, has nothing to do with surprises or death or lawsuits, or even surgeons. My point is this: whoever said "What you don't know can't hurt you", was a complete and total moron. Because for most people I know, not knowing is the worst feeling in the world. Okay, fine. Maybe it's the second worst. As surgeons, there are so many things we have to know. We have to know we have what it takes. We have to know how to take care of our patients... and how to take care of ourselves. As surgeons we have to be in the know. But as human beings, sometimes it's better to stay in the dark, because in the dark there may be fear, but there's also hope".

"and i'm sorry to make it about myself again but you signed up for this"

Cristina, George and Lucy shot darts while Izzie sat at a table near them. Cristina looked over at Meredith seated at the bar. "How long do you think she's gonna wait?" Cristina asked. "It's getting hard to watch", Izzie replied.

"The situation is now pathetic"

"Who's pathetic?" Meredith drunkenly asked from the bar. "You who pretend to be my friends calling me pathetic behind my back, in front of my face. Why don't you just dump the pig's blood on me now and get it over with". The interns pagers then went off. On the news, there is a train wreck. The train was bound for Vancouver and had over 300 passengers. "I just worked a thirty hour shift", Izzie complained. "Boo hoo, I was in an elevator about to puke my guts and then cried uncontrollably for twenty miserable minutes", Lucy replied. "I don't have any clean underwear", George groaned.

"And the biggest problem of the day goes to..."

Cristina, Izzie, George, Alex, Lucy and Meredith were in the elevator. Lucy glared at Alex and Meredith, extremely drunk, stumbled out of the elevator. Alex approached Lucy as they stepped out of the elevator. "So, you're not talking to me?" Alex asked. She didn't reply. "I'm sorry about today, I was ticked off about the surgery", he said. "Whatever", Lucy said, putting on a yellow protective gown. He tied it at the back for her and let his fingers graze the back of her neck, her breath hitched in her throat. She cleared her throat and turned around to tie his. After getting Meredith to stay out of the way, the interns followed Bailey to get their assignments. "No mistakes made just cause you're tired", Bailey commanded. Bailey pushed open a door to reveal lots of injured people. "I'm not so tired anymore", Cristina said happily. "Me neither", George agreed. "I'm still a little tired but whatever", Lucy muttered. Addison approached Bailey. "I need two interns", Addison said. "Stevens and Shepherd", Bailey said. Addison put her arm around Lucy's shoulders. "You good?" she asked. Lucy nodded and smiled.

Addison, Izzie and Lucy were with a pregnant woman, Brooke, who was involved in the crash. The patient had burns along her neck and extending down to her stomach. Izzie began to stare at Addison. "Izzie, stop staring at her", Lucy whispered to her. Addison saw her staring from the corner of her eye. "Do you need something, Dr Stevens?" Addison asked her. "No, I don't, thank you", Izzie replied. Lucy gave her a confused look. The woman began to have a contraction. "Stevens, book an OR, Brooke is in no condition to push and the baby is in distress", Addison said. "I'll have to perform a c-section". "Can I call a lawyer?" Brooke asked. "It's just that I don't have a will and there's no father".

"There is no need for alarm, Brooke. There's time to make the necessary arrangements".

Addison and Lucy stood next to Brooke's hospital bed when Jana came in. They looked happy to see one another. Alex came in. "Was Jana on the train?" Addison asked Alex. Izzie entered the room. "She was on the train", Alex replied.

"Did you give her the appropriate tests to ensure the baby's health? Why is she just wandering around the hospital? Dr Karev, leave. That was irresponsible, even for an intern. Do you disagree?"

"She wanted to see her friend. What was he supposed to do, tackle her?" Lucy asked her. "Dr Shepherd, do not let your feelings for Dr Karev cloud your judgment as a medical professional", Addison replied.

"I do not-"

"Dr Stevens, get Jana into a bed, please"

Addison, Lucy and Izzie were treating Brooke. Jana was seated in a wheelchair right by her side. Patricia entered the room with two clipboards. "Did someone ask for a notary?" she asked. "I asked for a lawyer", Brooke replied.

"I'm afraid I could not get one at this time of night but the hospital's forms should take care of what you need. Your child would be placed into the custody of whomever you specify in case of death or permanent vegetative state". "Who is dying?" Jana asked, confused. "There is some risk to the surgery due to the trauma and the burns", Addison explained.

"This is ridiculous"

"It's necessary, just in case. I don't want our son to end up with my mother", Brooke said. Jana quickly and eagerly took the clipboard from Patricia. "How long have you two been together?" Lucy asked. "Since the third grade", Brooke replied. Lucy furrowed her eyebrows in confusion. "We aren't lovers, we're best friends", Brooke explained. "We wanted our children to grow up with two parents. We both used the same sperm donor making our children brother and sister". Suddenly, Jana's water broke. They all moved into action.

"Jana, this is Dr Hoffman, he will take over delivering your baby", Addison explained. She walked back over to Brooke and Lucy handed her Brooke's chart. "We need to go to the operating room now", Addison said. "We were supposed to give birth together", Brooke sighed. "It's okay, Brooke", Jana reassured. "Go enjoy your c-section and the drugs that go along with it".

"I don't want you to be alone"

"I'll stay", Izzie announced. Brooke began to be wheeled out of the room. "Stay alive", she said to Jana. "You too", Jana replied.

Addison was operating on Brooke and Lucy was scrubbed in. Her baby was wedged under her ribs. "We need to pull him out. Count for me, Dr Shepherd", Addison said. "One, two...", Lucy counted shakily.

Addison and Lucy entered Jana's room where she lay with her baby in a bed next to her. "How is Brooke doing?" Izzie asked. "She and her son are doing fine", Addison replied. Addison and Lucy walked out into the hallway. "I'm sorry, Lucy. I was under a lot of stress. I'm sorry", Addison said, remorsefully.

"It's fine"

"Have you decided yet?"

"Hmm?"

"Whether or not you're going to hate me. You're Meredith's friend? I'm the wicked witch who came in and ruined her life and cheated on Doctor, what is it that you call him?"

"I don't cause it's gross but everyone calls him McDreamy"

"Does that embarrass him?"

"I think it does"

"By all rights, you should hate me. But I'm sticking around"

"He chose you?"

"Yeah, he did"

"Addie, I love you. I could never hate you. You're my best friend, you're my person, my sister. But Meredith is all of those things too. I may be putting myself in the middle here but just know that I'd hate him with either of you"

Addison chuckled. "I love you too, Lucy. I hope you're not mad"

"Your taste in men is iffy but I support it"

"Good" They then hugged.

At the end of the day, Meredith, Cristina, Lucy, Izzie and George sat on a bench outside the hospital looking exhausted. The door opened and Meredith looked to see who it was. Bailey approached them. "Get cleaned up, you have rounds in five minutes", she said. They all got up to go to their lockers.
