Chapter 8:Worthyness
Korkok Forest
Link steps to the Master Sword and takes a look around. In front of him is a huge tree with a face on it, but a nice face, unlike the ones in the fog before.
To his left and right, small creatures are everywhere, spying on him.
Link tries to focus again; surely his dad is anxious, waiting. Before he can touch the sword, someone speaks. "Oh, not so fast, young man."
Link looks around, trying to figure out who it is. It's a deep and slow voice; you can sense the age just from that voice. "Up here, yes, it's the tree talking to you. I have been waiting for you."
"Waiting for me?"
"Well, not for you specifically, but every now and then, one like you comes by."
"What do you mean?"
"Every now and then, Link comes to get the Master Sword."
"You mean other Links? Other heroes of Hyrule?"
"Yes, some younger and some older than yourself but each and everyone guided by the spirit of the sword and driven by the courage of the goddess. You made it through the Lost Woods, and for that, I congratulate you, but only now you are facing the real challenge."
"Wait, the real challenge?"
"Yes, the test of the Master Sword. Not everyone can wield it; it tests anyone who dares attempt to possess it. As you are right now, I cannot say if you are worthy and ready for it."
"What if I am not?"
"Then you will likely die."
Link looks at himself, doubting if he is ready and worthy of this sword that seals the darkness.
"Listen, child, if you made it through the forest not by luck but by brain and by courage and if you were led here by the spirit of the sword, then I tell you to take it. Take the sword and think about all that gives you strength and courage when you need it, and then you will be able to wield the sword that seals the darkness."
Link sees his parents in front of him; he remembers looking at Hyrule Castle after leaving Kakariko. He thinks of all that he has learned in the past years and all the strength he had built up. Every word of encouragement and every bit of trust put into him by everyone he knew. Then he grabs the sword with both hands and instantly feels his strength and life being pulled out of him.
It feels as if through Link's hands, the sword pulls his life and strength away. Link tries as hard as he can to fight against it and pull out the sword. After 4 seconds, he feels the sword coming closer to him, but it gets tougher and tougher every second. Then again, a little closer after almost ten seconds, which feels like an eternity to Link, he finally pulls out the sword.
Its long blue blade and dark blue handle feel so light in his hands now. It is the most beautiful sword Link has ever seen, and he turns it around to look at it when he holds it in a fighting position. The sword is almost as big as Link himself, but he wields and swings it around with such ease that it looks as if it weighs nothing. He then holds it against his forehead and bows his head to thank the goddess for the blessing he has been given, then points it at the sky.
He takes a couple of practice swings and realizes how perfectly it suits him despite the sword being almost as tall as him.
"Congratulations, young Link, you are the Hero chosen by the goddess and the Hero Of Hyrule. Please protect this land and its people from any harm and be proud and courageous as were the Heroes before you. And if you ever need anything, please come back and ask me. I am the Great Deku Tree, and I have lived for many years; I'm sure I can answer your questions. Farewell, and we will see each other again, Link."
"Thank you, Great Deku Tree; I will try my best and train more than anyone else to protect the Kingdom and the world from all evil."
"Good; then I shall send you back to the entrance of the Forest where you will meet your father again. Till we meet again."
"Goodbye, Deku Tree."
Link feels his body getting light and has a blue shimmer around him. He thinks about how familiar the Deku Tree is to him despite him never seeing him before. Maybe that was because of all the other Links knowing him. Maybe the memories and experiences were saved somewhere inside Link or given to him by the goddess when needed.
As Link is lost in his thoughts, he finds himself outside of the forest, looking at the fog and reliving all that has happened in the past hour. Before he can process it all, he turns around to see his father, leaning against a tree, waiting for Link. Link rushes to him, pulling out the Master Sword from his back and screams.
"DAD! I'M THE HERO CHOSEN BY THE GODDESS! I DID IT, I PULLED OUT THE SWORD!"
His dad gets up and rushes to him, but before they can connect, Link starts feeling a sudden heaviness in his limbs, a wave of exhaustion washing over him. The world around him starts to blur, and as his vision fades, he hears his father's concerned voice.
"Link! Hold on, we'll get you some help!"
Everything goes dark for Link; the last thing he feels is the ground shaking and birds flying away in panic.
