Chapter 20: A New Beginning

HYRULE CASTLE

Link stands before the grand doors of the audience chamber, taking a deep breath to steady his nerves. He's made up his mind, but the weight of his decision presses heavily on his shoulders. As the guards push the doors open, he steps inside, greeted by the sight of King Rhoam seated on his throne. Princess Zelda stands beside him, her expression unreadable.

"Link," the King begins, his voice deep and commanding. "Have you come to a decision?"

Link bows deeply. "Yes, Your Majesty. I will accept the position as the Princess's personal knight, but I have a request."

The King's eyebrow raises in curiosity. "A request?"

"I ask that my girlfriend, Leona, be allowed to live in the Castle as well," Link says, trying to keep his voice steady. "It would make my duties easier to perform if I knew she was safe and nearby."

The King leans back, stroking his beard thoughtfully. He glances at Zelda, whose expression hardens slightly. "That is an unusual request," he murmurs. "But considering your father's service and your own valor, I believe it is a reasonable one. I grant your request."

Link exhales in relief. "Thank you, Your Majesty."

Zelda's eyes narrow slightly, though her voice remains formal. "Very well, Sir Link. We shall make the necessary arrangements."

Link meets her gaze, noticing the coldness in her eyes. He can't shake the feeling that she resents his presence.

Back at Leona's house, Link bursts through the door, finding her in the living room. "Leona! The King agreed!"

Leona looks up, her face lighting up with joy. "Really? Oh, Link, that's wonderful!"

Link embraces her, feeling a surge of gratitude and relief. "We'll be together, in the Castle. It's all going to be okay."

A few days later, Link and Leona arrive at the Castle, their belongings in tow. Zelda meets them in the grand hallway, her demeanor cool and composed. "Welcome," she says, her tone formal. "I will show you to your rooms."

As they walk through the Castle, Zelda points out various rooms and facilities. "Link, you will be in this chamber," she says, opening a door to a modest but comfortable room. "Leona, your room is just down the hall."

Link and Leona exchange a glance. While they are not sharing a room, being close is a comfort.

Zelda turns to Leona. "May I have a word with you in private?" she asks. Leona nods, and Link watches them disappear down the hall, curiosity gnawing at him.

After a while, Zelda returns to Link, her expression still composed but slightly softer. "Now, about your duties," she begins. "Your primary responsibility is my protection. You will accompany me wherever I go. Your training will resume immediately, and your schedule will be rigorous. Breakfast is at dawn, followed by training sessions. Any free time you have should be spent on honing your skills or strategizing with the other knights."

Link nods, absorbing the weight of her words. "Understood, Princess."

She continues, "You won't have much time to relax or be laid back anymore, Link. Every moment counts, and your dedication is crucial to our success."

Her words sting, a sharp reminder of how much his life is about to change. He feels a pang of hurt, as if she's dismissing all he has done up until now. But he steels himself, knowing the gravity of his role. "I won't let you down, Princess," he replies.

Zelda nods, her gaze steady. "I hope so, for all our sakes."

As Zelda walks away, Link takes a deep breath, steeling himself for the challenges ahead. This new chapter in his life is filled with uncertainty, but with Leona by his side, he feels ready to face whatever comes.

Later that evening, after settling into his new room and unpacking his belongings, Link makes his way to Leona's room. He knocks gently, and she opens the door, her face lighting up with a warm smile.

"Come in," she says, stepping aside to let him enter.

Link walks in, feeling a sense of calm wash over him in her presence. The room is cozy, with a window overlooking the castle gardens, a small writing desk, and a comfortable bed. He sits down on the edge of the bed, and Leona joins him, her hand finding his.

"So," Link begins, his eyes meeting hers, "what did the Princess talk to you about?"

Leona's expression becomes thoughtful, a hint of mystery in her eyes. "She just wanted to get to know me a little," she replies. "Asked about my background, how we met... that sort of thing."

Link raises an eyebrow, sensing there's more to it. "Is that all?"

Leona sighs softly. "She also wanted to make sure I understood the responsibilities you have now. She was... concerned about the impact it might have on us."

Link squeezes her hand gently. "And what did you tell her?"

"I told her that I understand," Leona says, her voice steady. "And that I'm here to support you, no matter what."

Link smiles, feeling a swell of gratitude and love for her. "Thank you, Leona. I don't know what I'd do without you."

Leona leans in, resting her head on his shoulder. "We'll get through this together, Link. It might be challenging, but I believe in us."

Link wraps his arm around her, drawing her closer. "You make everything feel possible," he whispers. "Even when things get tough, just knowing you're here makes it all bearable."

They sit in comfortable silence for a while, simply enjoying each other's presence. The warmth of their connection provides a sanctuary from the uncertainties and responsibilities that loom over them.

"I'm glad we have each other," Leona says softly. "No matter what happens, we'll face it together."

Link nods, feeling a renewed sense of determination. "Together," he echoes. "We'll be okay."

As they sit there, share a kiss, sealing their promise to each other, and as the evening fades into night, they find comfort in the knowledge that their love will guide them through whatever comes next.
