Chapter 19: Shatter me
Hyrule City
Link steps out of the Castle, the weight of the King's request pressing heavily on his shoulders. As he walks through the bustling streets of Hyrule, he feels the eyes of the townspeople upon him. Whispers follow in his wake, hushed conversations about the recent events and speculations about his future.
He tries to focus on the familiar sights around him-the marketplace buzzing with activity, children playing in the alleyways, the distant sound of blacksmiths hammering steel. But his thoughts keep drifting back to the King's words.
"Being the Princess's personal knight," Link mutters under his breath. "Can I handle that? Will I fail?"
The fear of not seeing Leona much anymore gnaws at him. The time they've spent together has been a sanctuary from the chaos that has consumed his life. Losing that would be another blow, one he isn't sure he can bear.
He turns a corner, the familiar path to Leona's home coming into view. The weight of his sword feels heavier with each step, the decision looming larger in his mind. What if he isn't enough to protect Zelda? What if he fails again?
Link reaches Leona's home, hesitates for a moment, and then opens the door. He steps inside, the familiar warmth of the house a stark contrast to the turmoil inside him. As he enters, Leona looks up from the living room, her eyes immediately honing in on the distress all over his face.
Without a word, she rises and walks over to him, her concern evident. She gently touches his cheek, searching his eyes. "Link, what's wrong?"
Link falls into her embrace, the overwhelming emotions finally breaking through. He clings to her, the strength he has been trying to hold onto slipping away.
Link whispers into Leona's shoulder, his voice trembling. "I don't know if I can do this. The King wants me to be Zelda's personal knight, but... I don't want to lose you. I can't fail."
Leona holds him tighter, her hand gently stroking his hair. "Link, whatever you decide, we'll face it together. You're stronger than you think, and you're not alone in this. I'm here for you, always."
He closes his eyes, taking in the comfort of her words and her presence. For a moment, the world outside fades away, and all that matters is the love and support he feels in her arms.
Link takes a deep breath, drawing strength from Leona. "I need to think about it more, but thank you. I don't know what I'd do without you."
Leona pulls back slightly, just enough to look into his eyes. "We'll figure it out together. No matter what happens, we'll get through it."
Link nods, feeling a bit of the weight lift from his shoulders. With Leona by his side, he knows he can face whatever challenges lie ahead. Together, they step inside, ready to confront the uncertainty of the future.
Later that afternoon, seeking a reprieve from the intensity of recent events, Link and Leona head to Lake Hylia. The sun casts a golden hue over Hyrule, and the air is fresh, carrying the scent of wildflowers and the distant sound of birds chirping.
They reach the lake, its serene waters reflecting the clear sky. A small island sits a short distance from the shore, their destination for the day. Leona smiles as she spots it, her excitement contagious. They find a rowboat nearby and paddle their way across the gentle waves, laughter filling the air as they occasionally splash each other.
Upon reaching the island, they settle in a cozy spot near the water's edge. Link sets up a small campfire while Leona unpacks a simple picnic. The fire crackles to life, casting a warm glow as the sun begins to set. They sit close together, the soft light of the flames dancing in their eyes.
Leona hands Link a piece of bread, and their fingers touch briefly. He feels a sense of peace, a quiet moment of connection that speaks volumes. They talk about everything and nothing, the conversation flowing naturally. For a while, Link forgets about the weight of his responsibilities, losing himself in Leona's presence.
As the night deepens, the stars begin to twinkle above, reflected in the still waters of the lake. Leona leans her head on Link's shoulder, and he wraps an arm around her, pulling her close.
Link gazes at the stars, feeling a rare sense of contentment. Moments like this, with Leona by his side, remind him of the beauty still left in the world. Her presence is a balm to his soul, giving him strength and hope. He realizes how important she is to him, not just as a lover but as a source of stability and happiness.
They sit in comfortable silence, the crackling fire and the gentle lapping of the water the only sounds around them. Link gently squeezes Leona's hand, a silent thank you for her unwavering support and love.
After a while, Leona looks up at him, her eyes reflecting the firelight. "Feeling better?"
Link nods, a small smile forming on his lips. "Yeah, I do. Thank you, Leona. I really needed this."
She smiles back, her own relief evident. "Anytime, Link. We'll get through everything together. Just remember that."
Link nods, feeling that Leona is a gift he doesn't deserve. She could never replace his parents, but she makes him feel the security and confidence he once had when they were around.
He looks at Leona, who is still staring into the lake, and admires her beauty. Her reflection shimmers on the water, and for a moment, all his worries seem distant.
"Leona," he says softly. She turns at his words, her eyes meeting his with a gentle smile.
"You know, as nice as this is, I have to talk about this," he continues, feeling a knot form in his stomach.
"I know." She puts her hand on his, squeezing it gently.
"I really love every second with you, and I want to spend every second with you," Link begins, his voice steady but filled with emotion. "But I think I have to do this."
Leona's smile remains, though tears glisten in her eyes. She waits for him to continue, understanding the gravity of the situation.
Link fumbles with his words, the weight of his decision pressing on him. "If I don't do this and the princess is killed, all of Hyrule is doomed, and... and..."
Leona cuts him off, her voice soothing. "You don't have to explain this to me or make excuses. I understand. I mean, I did fall in love with the most important person in Hyrule." She says this jokingly, though a tear slips down her cheek.
"I think you are the most important person in my life. Without you, I don't know where I would be." Link reaches for her and embraces her in a hug, his heart aching with the thought of being apart.
"What will become of us, Link?" she asks softly.
"What do you mean?"
"Well, you will be gone all the time. How can we continue this relationship like this?"
Link's heart drops. Is she implying that they have to break up? He can't handle that.
"Well, I wanted to do something for quite a while now, but I didn't want to push it." Link gets up and sits in front of Leona, taking both her hands in his. "You know when my father died, I inherited all of his wealth, and I know the King still owes my father a thing or two, so there are two options. Because breaking up isn't one."
Leona's eyes widen, waiting for him to reveal his plan.
"Option one, I ask the King to give you chambers in the Castle. Since we aren't married, he won't let us share one, but if I play it right, I might be able to get you your own chambers in the Castle. Then I would see you every day, and since the Princess rarely leaves the Castle, it wouldn't change that much."
"We wouldn't sleep in the same bed," Leona protests gently.
"Hm, yes, we wouldn't, at least not that the King would know." Link grins, and Leona laughs, the sound like music to his ears.
"You would sneak into my room?"
"Anything for you, my princess." Link kisses her through their shared laughter.
"Okay, so what is option two?"
"Well, I have enough rupees to buy a house so close to the Castle that I could sleep there every night. We wouldn't see each other during the day, but we would see each other every night and sleep in the same bed." Link winks at her, a playful glint in his eyes.
"And we would have more privacy," Leona says, pulling Link closer until they are only inches apart.
"Yes, we would," Link whispers. "Unlike here, sweetie."
Leona looks around and releases Link. "You're right."
They both laugh, and after a short time of staring into each other's eyes, Link speaks again.
"So, what will it be, princess?"
"I want to be with you as much as possible." Leona stops, thinking about it for a moment. "I want to be in the Castle with you!" She grins like a child, excited for the future.
"Then so it shall be, my lady."
Link kisses Leona, and they both lie down, looking into the future with confidence and excitement. They forget the trouble that tomorrow may bring because whatever trouble that may be, it will be worth it as long as they can keep each other.
