Chapter 14: The Nature of the Mind
Outside of Hyrule Castle
Link prepares himself mentally for what is about to come. He is waiting outside the castle for the reporter to show up, and after a while, he sees a girl approach him.
She waves at him from a distance. "Hello, you must be Link! I'm Leona. I'll be reporting on your adventure. This will be so exciting, I can't wait to get started!" Once she catches up to Link, she shakes his hand with quite enthusiasm.
Link just nods at her and looks towards where they need to go.
"Ah yes, straight to the point, as expected from the Hero of Hyrule."
Link starts walking, and Leona is right next to him. On the way there, she asks tons of questions but always ends up answering them herself. Link thinks it's cute, but trying to focus while getting your ear talked off is quite the challenge.
Link sees the monster camp in the distance and scans the area. He sees all the spots he focused on yesterday with his dad. Then he realizes that Leona hasn't stopped walking and is heading straight to the monster camp. He runs to her and grabs her before she can walk into the monster's sight. He then signals her to stay here and watch from a distance.
"Oh, I'm sorry Link, I didn't realize we were already there," she starts talking again. Link just shows her that she should look at what is happening and stay here. Still, not a word is spoken. Leona nods; his signals are clear and she really doesn't feel like dying.
Link leaves her in the high grass and sneaks towards the hill to scout the camp. He sees that everything is still the way the information and map showed it. So Link gets ready to execute his plan. He takes out his bow and aims at the scout on top of their small camp. The Bokoblin drops dead and disappears in a purple cloud. Link then jumps down the hill and pulls out the Master Sword. This is the first time he has used it in actual combat; so far, he had only used it to train by himself. Once Link arrives behind the blue Bokoblin, he raises his sword with both hands and slashes down, killing it in one strike.
The other Bokoblins screech and run towards their weapons. Link quickly runs there to get there before them and cuts them off. Now they swing at him with their fists and throw rocks at him. But Link dodges them all. There are four Bokoblins around Link now.
Leona starts to get closer to Link because she can't believe what he is doing. He backs away from the weapons and allows the Bokoblins to get them. "What is he doing?" Then he even puts away his sword.
"LINK, WATCH OUT!" Leona screams as one of the Bokoblins swings their sword at Link from behind his back. But Link dodges with ease, and now all of the Bokoblins start to swing their weapons at him. Not one of them manages to hit Link. He weaves and dodges around them, and it all looks so easy. He baits them into believing he will go left and then just steps to the right and ducks under their attacks. Not one of the Bokoblins gets even close to Link.
And that just keeps going for a while, for a long while. At one point, Link quits the fight and goes over to Leona.
"Are you alright? I didn't see you while I was fighting anymore, so I wanted to check if you were still doing fine." Link looks at Leona, who just sits there at a loss for words.
"Link, what are you doing? Get in there and fight. Why are you not attacking them?"
"Well, when I practice, I never have anyone fighting me with the actual intent to kill me. These Bokoblins want to kill me, and I can use that to get proper practice. Although you are right, this isn't really any practice. I'll just end this real quick. I'll be right back."
Link leaves her and pulls out a sword, but not the Master Sword. Instead, he pulls out a wind cleaver. He lowers his upper body and puts the sword next to his left hip. He then looks up at the Bokoblins, dashes at them, and draws the sword. He slashes all of them with a single strike. For Leona, it seems like a bolt of lightning strikes from Bokoblin to Bokoblin.
He then flips his sword quickly to clean it, puts it back in its sheath, and walks towards Leona again. Leona is still amazed. "Wow, Link, I... I don't even know what to say. That was incredible. I'll be able to write an incredibly good article about you, about the Hero of Hyrule and his strength."
Link laughs. "Thank you, Leona. I hope you enjoyed it."
"I very much did. If you don't mind me asking, why are you talking now? I was talking to you the whole way here and you didn't say a word. Now you are suddenly speaking and so relaxed too."
"Well, you were talking. Sometimes it didn't feel like you were talking to me, but still." They both laugh, and Leona hits Link on his arm. "I'm actually not sure why. It's probably because I was slightly nervous. I knew I could take them on when I saw them, but before we arrived and I started, I didn't know if maybe something had changed."
"Ah, I understand. Now that we are finished with work, I was wondering if you maybe wanted to spend some time together? Maybe I can still ask you a couple of questions, which I can use for the article."
Link looks at the girl, who looks away with a slightly red face. Now that he looks at her, he also realizes that she is very pretty. She has a darker skin tone and long black hair that is slightly curled. Her eyes are brown, but they are shining in a way that he has only ever seen once before. "Sure, why not? I know a lake and a small forest nearby. We can make something to eat there and relax."
She turns to him and her face lights up. She smiles from ear to ear, and Link's heart melts. The way she gets excited and happy is so cute. The way she looks at him makes him feel excited and gives him a feeling he had already forgotten. He is excited, and he is actually, really happy.
