Chapter 13: The Proving
Hyrule City, Training ground
Link is on his way to train with the army as he usually does, but on his way something is different. He hears people whispering among themselves, he can hear them talking about him. They are making remarks about him and the way he looks and behaves. Link just keeps walking, thinking that maybe someone just had a bad day.
But then he hears someone shouting at him. "WHY DID MY HUSBAND HAVE TO DIE, WHEN THIS USELESS PIECE OF A HERO IS JUST WANDERING THESE CITIES DOING NOTHING?!"
Link looks around and sees a woman on her balcony. She has tears in her eyes and her face is red. Link feels bad but he doesn't know what to say. Should he be out there? He really isn't learning much with the other trainees and it's been forever since he fought an actual monster. After a short while, he can see someone younger pulling the woman away from the balcony and she breaks down crying.
~~~~~~~~
From that point on, every day, Link hears people doubting him. Some call him a tool of the King, to make them feel safe but in reality, he is a nobody and just a pretender. Even the soldiers insult him and ignore him whenever they get a chance. Day by day it gets worse. So Link decides to tell his father about it.
"You know Link, maybe we can put you out there to fight monsters. So that you can prove yourself if that helps you." Link nods and goes to his room. Patrick thinks to himself. "Perhaps this would calm the people down and scare off the Yiga that are here in Hyrule somewhere. I'll go see Rhoam about it."
So Patrick goes and decides to talk to Rhoam.
He is greeted by the King. "Patrick, what are you doing here at such a late time?"
"We have an issue but I also have a solution."
"Okay, let's hear it."
"The people of this city are rejecting Link, they are wondering why they have to send their family members to fight against monsters, if the Hero of Hyrule is just sitting here doing nothing."
"Ah, I see why that would be an issue. I've recognized that the people are more afraid and uneasy than ever."
"Yes, that's why I propose that we send Link out to fight against monsters and make some sort of article about it so that everyone sees that we really do have the Hero of Hyrule to protect us."
"Hm, yes I think that could work, but we can't risk Link getting injured or worse, killed. For all we know, Calamity could strike at any moment."
"Yes, I am aware but with the monsters that are out right now, I've already made a plan for what camp he should attack. Also, Link is the best soldier this Kingdom has ever seen, he is a one-man army and I know he can take that camp on, by himself, without much, if any trouble."
"Okay, then let him head out tomorrow, I will send a trusted reporter along so that he will write a proper article. Thank you for your thought Patrick, it is good to have you here."
"Thank you too, Rhoam, good night."
The King nods and Patrick leaves and goes home to tell his family about his talk with the King.
~~~~~~~~
Patrick enters his house and calls for everybody to please come down to the living room. After a few seconds, everyone comes in.
"Hi guys, I have something to say..." They all look at him in anticipation of what he will say next. "Link, you will be going out to fight monsters."
Link's eyes start to glow and he gets really excited.
"Now, before you get excited and just rush off. There will be a reporter following you, to later write an article about it. The monsters at that camp are not that strong but, even weak enemies can make you struggle if you are unprepared so I will prepare you."
Kathrine looks at her husband, "Aren't you going to be with him, just to be sure that he won't get hurt?"
"I would... but I need to be in the city for something important. Don't worry, I don't have a single doubt in my mind that Link will be able to get this done."
"Uhhhh, Link is getting to fight against monsters, show 'em what you got Hero-man." Aryll says.
"Hero-man?" Link asks, confused, "What kind of name is Hero-man?"
"Your name obviously. It's like, like... uhmmm, like. I don't know but saying 'man' after your actual title makes your name more epic. Hero-boy sounds like an insult."
Link laughs, "Well, I think I'll just go by Link."
"Alright," Patrick speaks up again, "since we now all know what will happen, please wish Link good luck and then we can get you prepared for tomorrow, Link."
Kathrine and Aryll hug Link and wish him the best of luck before going to bed and Patrick pulls out a map that shows the land around the camp and what kind of monsters to expect.
Once Link is ready, he walks next to his father and looks at the map laying on the table.
"Okay, Link, what do you see? What do you think, is the best way to go about this?"
"Well, I see a little hill next to the camp, there I can scout the camp, to see if anything has changed from the plan that I've already set up."
"Yes, good, even with the information that we have, we can't be sure that nothing has changed. What's next?"
"Well, I could start with a bow and try to take out the scouts, so I can then sneak up on the rest. Take out the blue Bokoblin, and then take the rest on in a straight-on fight."
"Okay, how will you fight the straight-on fight?"
"What do you mean?"
"Well, will you just freestyle the fight?"
"Yes, I mean probably."
"Hm okay, why not plan it out?"
"Well I think," Link thinks for a little while. "Whenever I tried to plan out a full fight against another soldier, something went different than planned and I had to make up a different plan on the spot. I think if I don't have a full plan to begin with, I won't panic because the plan I had didn't work and instead, I'll see what I can and can't do on the spot."
"Interesting, how about you try it out and see how it goes? What do you think potential dangers could there be?"
"Well, while I try to go up to the top of their camp, they could throw explosive barrels at me or just shoot me with arrows while I try to approach the top platform."
"Right and how can you change that? What will you do about it?"
"I think, I'll try to shoot the top Bokoblin when I am on the hill to scout. Since he is alone at the top, no one will notice."
"That sounds like a good plan, now remember you will be leaving around 5 in the morning. We will probably still be asleep. That's why I wish you the best of luck right now and remember if things get difficult, we will always be there for you no matter what happens. Trust us and when you get back we will be here waiting for you. I'm sure this will only be the first of many victories against the monsters that you will celebrate."
Patrick hugs his son and ruffles his hair.
"Now go get some sleep and get ready for tomorrow."
Link smiles and heads to bed, he quickly falls asleep and gets well rested for his big day tomorrow.
