Thirty-seven
"Ms. Wright, you need to wake up."
No, you need to bug off. Bella groaned inwardly, shuffling away from the hands of the intruder trying to shake her awake and clinging unto Iverson's waist a little tighter.
This right here was the most peaceful she had been in weeks! She wanted to lay there and pretend that the world around her wasn't wrong. That her mother hadn't kept a huge secret from her since she was born, that she hadn't spend the best and worst part of her college year with a brother she didn't even know she had. That, that said brother wasn't now lying cold and frozen in death. That the guy she loved wasn't lying in a hospital bed with a large pneumothorax and had only narrowly escaped death himself.
She wanted to lay there for as long as possible, pretending that her world wasn't wrong but some inconsiderate jerk kept trying to shake her awake and back to her cruel reality.
"Please wake up Ms. Wright, you're cramping his space and the doctor is on his way for the routine checkups." The nurse reasoned with her.
Okay, fine. Bella's reluctantly opened her eyes at the mentioned of the doctor, the man had threatened to place a security guard outside Iverson's wardroom if she didn't stop sneaking in and she had no doubt he meant what he said.
Slowly, she lifted her head to look at Iverson. His hand had significantly tightened around her the moment nurse Nazifa started trying to shake her awake, but he was still unconscious himself.
The doctor said he was doing better than expected even though he still couldn't stay awake for any longer than ten minutes because of his inability to breathe by himself.
She had half lied to him when she told him the bullet only poked his lungs, the truth was he suffered a completely collapsed lungs and an inflammation of the larynx, which resulted in his lost of voice and the inability to breathe naturally. He needed all the machines around him, including a chest tube to keep breathing steadily.
Bella carefully extricate herself from him and balanced her weight on her good leg as she stood beside his bed, watching him.
He looked like he'd been to the gate of hell and still not quite back. She gingerly touched his temple to brush his wild and dishevelled hair back from his face, she felt unable to swallow down the lump that seem to have taken residence in her throat these past days.
She could have lost him too, he risked his life for her.
But then again if he hadn't showed up to save her he wouldn't be laying in that bed and Daniel wouldn't be dead.
Bella tensed up at her own thought and watched a frown make it way unto Iverson's sleeping face as if he could hear her disturbing thought. Then his eyes fluttered open.
She took a sharp breath and withdrew her hand from his face like she was burned by his skin. His eyes roamed around the ceiling above seemingly a little disorientated until he saw her.
"You." Bella gasped, a metaphorical switch going off in her head and she took a step back from his side. "It's your fault Daniel is dead." She declared hoarsely, her voice still irritated from all the screaming she did the day it all came down.
"It's your fault Daniel is dead." She repeated, her heart beating crazily in her chest she was only another breath away from full on panicking. How did she not realize this sooner.
Iverson's looked genuinely confused, his bearded face morphing together in a deep frown and he tried to lift himself up to get a proper look at her.
"Ms. Wright, I'm sure you don't mean that?" Nurse Nazifa called from behind, placing a cautious hand on Bella's shoulder when the steady beeping from the machines started going faster, a sign that Iverson was getting agitated.
"No, it's your fault." Bella shrugged off the nurse's hand and bend a little to be eye level with Iverson. "I told you not to involve the police, didn't I? Daniel heard the siren, he killed himself because he thought he'd killed you." She cry-yelled at him.
The confusion on his face turned into shock and pain, he opened his mouth as if to speak but nothing came out. He stretched his uninjured hand towards her but she backed away from him like he had an incurable disease. Iverson looked stricken.
"I had a good plan if you hadn't show up to rescue me. Who told you I needed saving? I didn't need you and all these, is your fault!" She yelled at him, her body quivering with rage and different other emotions that had been bent up since Daniel was pronounced dead.
The beeping turned erratic and Iverson's face scrunched up in agony, his chest heaving up and down with his struggles for words or at least to be able to sit up a little. The pain and discomfort he was in evident on his paled face.
"Okay that's it, let's get you out of here." The nurse said, practically dragging Bella out of the room while she kicked and yelled at Iverson's struggling form on the hospital bed.
"I had a plan but you ruined everything! You should have stayed away and Daniel wouldn't be dead!"
"That's enough!" The nurse said sternly once they were out of the room and she shut the door behind them. "Control yourself Ms. Wright, that's the grieve speaking and not you. The reports we have stated that this guy took the bullets for you, he saved your life!"
"My life wouldn't have needed saving if he had stayed away." Bella snapped, tearily glaring at the nurse and the closed door before indignantly turning around to leap towards her own room.
She remembered the look on Daniel's face after he fired that second bullet and Iverson crumbled to the ground. The last memory of Daniel she would ever have was how he stood there utterly shock by his own action, his rage dissolving instantaneously when he realized what he had done. He looked at Bella, as shocked as she was.
Then the police siren started blaring in the distance, she vaguely noticed Biggie's car screeching to a halt and him practically flying out of the door to Iverson's side.
Bella couldn't take her eyes off of Daniel's, it was as if she was seeing him for the first time and simultaneously knew it would be the last time.
She knew the exact second he made his decision, she saw the end resignation in his eyes but didn't know what it meant until he held his own gun to his own head.
Daniel didn't mean to hurt anyone, she saw the pain and remorse in his eyes as he pulled the trigger on himself.
She felt dizzy from the scene that was ingrained in her memory like an horror movie stuck on replay. That was all she saw whenever she closed her eyes to sleep.
She stopped walking and leaned on the wall for support, her breaths coming out raggedy and uneven.
"Are you alright? Do you want me to get a wheelchair?" The nurse asked. Bella shook her head and closed her eyes briefly, she only needed a moment.
She still couldn't fully comprehend the situation, the fact that Daniel was indeed gone still unwind her every now and then when the thought flitter through her mind and now she knew those to blame.
She had a plan for goodness sake. She would have followed Daniel half way across the world with a new identity and with a little time and patience, she was sure she could have convinced him to get the professional help he needed.
They would have come back to their lives in Metropolis eventually and everything would have been fine, but of course Iverson had to show up and ruin it all. Now because of him, Daniel was dead.
Voices and hurried steps splattering on the tiled floor dragged Bella out of her thoughts, she and the nurse looked over their shoulders to see two young girls rushing towards them. Both had a Starbucks Coffee cup in hand and shared identical urgent but excited expression on their faces.
"I can't believe this hospital is about to become my favorite place." One said to the other, her face alight with a huge grin.
"Same. But look, the one time we needed our phones the most and neither of us had it. We better hurry before she leaves." The other one responded as they sprinted past Bella and the nurse and continued on their way down the hall, the sound of their feet echoing noisily around the hallway.
Bella resumed walking behind them in a much slower pace due to her leg that hadn't quite healed. One of the reasons they were still keeping her in the damn hospital. Or so the doctor said?
Her mind was numb and far off when they were explaining what are condition was. She only vaguely remember high blood pressure, dehydration, infected leg and God knows what.
But she will get better and Iverson will too, and they'd walk out of this hospital like nothing ever happened.
Daniel wouldn't.
She was about two feet away from her wardroom when the two girls re-emerge from a room ahead, both giggling as they close the door behind them and took off running back the way they came from.
"What is going on girls? This is a hospital, you need to slow down." Nazifa chided them.
"Sorry, but like...Marie Ivy is in the reception right now and we need to catch her for a selfie before she leaves. Surely every patient in this hospital will understand what an unmissable opportunity this is." One of the girls threw over her shoulder as they ran off.
Bella froze mid steps. "Marie Ivy is here?" She gasped, feeling the blood drain from her face. "That's Iverson's sister."
"So I've heard." Nazifa chuckled at her reaction. "But I have strict orders to get you into your own bed. You are on admission yet you've missed two doctor's appointments because you're never in your room."
Bella scoffed, she was just surprised it's all. She would rather stab herself with all the injections in this hospital than be in the same room with Marie Ivy anyway. That queen diva was a lot of things Bella couldn't stand in her current state of mind and there was no doubt in her mind that Marie would try to blame Iverson's condition on her.
"She'd probably come to see you after seeing her brother." Nurse Nazifa added, pushing Bella's door open.
Well, she hope not, else they might end up strangling each other. However, as soon she stepped into her room she felt her blood iced up at the image standing in the middle of her room. Her nose flared at the sight of the woman she had blindly trusted and practically worshipped her entire life.
Bella defiantly folded her hands on her chest and faced Nazifa with cold yet blazing eyes. "I thought I made myself clear that I didn't want any visitors, especially this woman?!"
Nurse Nazifa shifted uncomfortably on her legs. "Well, uhm..."
"Isabella, please just listen to me for a second. I am your mother." Margaret interrupted in a pained voice, looking even more miserable and ten years older than when she came to see Bella two days ago.
"My mother?!" Bella cackled humorlessly, facing the woman and enjoying how further defeated she looked. "My mother would have found ten minutes out of twenty years to tell me I have a twin brother she gave up at birth for money! You on the other hand, I have no idea who you are."
Margaret started crying all over again, like she'd done the first, second and third time she tried to talk to Bella. "Please, let...me...explain." She pleaded brokenly, her little body shaking with her sobs as she tried to reach for Bella's hand.
She quickly jerked out of her reach and move towards her bed. Bella felt no pity for this woman, if anything, seeing her miserable comforted Bella in a way. It gave her a sense of justice for Daniel.
"I want you out of my room." She said in a flat tone. "The person you owe an explanation is lying in the morgue where you put him. He may have pulled the trigger on himself but you loaded the bullets and handed him the gun while silently cheering him on. His blood will forever be on your hands and I want nothing to do with you ever again."
Margaret cried harder, almost doubling over with the grieve and guilt she felt. "You don't understand..." She begged and took a shaky step towards Bella again. "I had no choice... Please..listen to...."
"Get out!" Bella exploded, startling both her mother and the nurse that was quietly watching the exchange. "Get the fúck out now and don't ever come back! I don't want to see your face again, get out of my life!" She screamed at the top of her lungs and Nazifa quickly intervened by forceful dragging Margaret out of the room like she did Bella just a moment ago.
Bella slumped unto her bed in despair and angrily wiped the tears rolling down her cheeks with a fist. Daniel was dead and no explanation would bring him back.
Her fingers tapped anxiously on her thigh like the steady drip drop of a leaky sink. Her fingernails had already been bitten to nubs and her cuticles were swollen red from her aggressive picking. But she wasn't feeling any better. Daniel was gone, never to be seen again and everyone around had a hand in it.
Her hands ripped through her tangly hair and she suddenly shot up from her bed and began pacing around the four enclosing white walls. Everything was closing in on her, she felt like she was drowning and sanity was slowly slipping through her grasp.
Her emotions were suffocating her, the room was suffocating her, the hall was suffocating her, the entire damn hospital was suffocating her. And she had to get out.
"Well hello there, absentee patient." A nurse Bella had seen once or twice breezed into the room, startling her out of her thoughts and went straight to the window to adjust the shutters with Nazifa trailing composedly behind her.
"How nice to finally meet you in your allocated room." The new nurse said, her chirpy voice reminded Bella of her friend Claire, who to her knowledge has been to the hospital to see her twice but Bella had rejected all company. She had enough anger and pain in her than she knew what to do with it and having small conversations was a no, no.
"When am I getting out of here?" Bella directed her question at Nazifa, ignoring the other happy nurse.
"Well, uhm...the doctor will be in to check on you soon..."
"The earlier you lie down and get the recommended bed rest, the better." The new nurse chipped in, walking back towards Bella and Nazifa from the window, a bulky file clutched to her chest. She guided Bella back to her bed with one hand on her arm.
"You won't be going anywhere until your BP is back to normal and there's no longer a trace of sedative in your system." She opened the file in her hands and flip through the pages.
"Your previous file had no mention of your own OB/GYN and you were scheduled to meet one yesterday except alas, you went missing from your room. Don't worry though, the meeting was reschedule to later today. So once that is done and your little one is no longer in harms way with the stress and drug you were expose to these past days, you'll be free to go." She gave Bella a tight lip smile at the end of her long speech, Bella couldn't help but gape at her like she just sprouted another head and a tail.
The nurse spoke so fast she couldn't keep up but two words stuck to her.
"What did you say to me?" Bella asked with a dumbfounded expression.
The nurse huffed in exasperation. "Do you want me to repeat everyword again? I said a lot of things."
"Damn right you did but what the fuck do you mean by 'little one'? And why do I need an OB/GYN?"
And then the blabbing nurse had the nerve to look flustered and confused herself as she quickly flipped through the open file in her hands again
Bella's patience hung by a thin thread, with the anger that was coursing through her veins what she really wanted to do was tackle the loud mouthed woman to the ground and rip all her hair. She was feeling that aggressive, she could even throw them both out of her window.
"Uhm, Ms. Wright, one of your tests results came back positive." Nazifa spoke up when the bubbly nurse kept flicking through the pages of the file searching for who knows what.
Bella turned to nurse Nazifa, her mind just on the verge of giving out. "Which one?" She asked through gritted teeth.
Nazifa shifted uncomfortable on her feet and shot a glare at the other nurse before facing Bella again. "The pregnancy test." She announced. "I believe you're nine weeks gone."
