Thirty-nine
Seven years later....
"I'm sorry Ms. Campbell, I can't consider what you're suggesting." Dr. Silver the cardiologist said, obviously surprised. He dropped his pen on his desk with a clattering sound and leaned his 6ft something frame back in his squeaky leather chair to appraise Bella with his usual semi-serious, semi-concern look.
"As a practitioner, I find your suggestion rather disconcerting and as a friend..." He looked at her directly in the eyes to make sure she was okay with the idea of them being friends.
"I've known you for a while now and we've been through some ups and downs together over the years and you know how much I adore Lyric so I'd consider myself a friend and as a friend, I'd say what you just suggested is downright preposterous."
Bella let out a whoosh of frustrated breath with a slight shake of her head in indignation. "Why is that? You said so yourself, I'm living on borrowed time."
"No you're not, your daughter is. And miracles happen you know?"
"Not to me, they don't." Bella snapped, the thing the years gone by have given her was even less tolerance of bullshit.
Her life had been series of misfortune and tough luck. She always got the stone-hard side of whatever curve ball life decide to throw at her. Like living with Daniel without knowing they were twins only for him to die a few days after she found out.
Like getting pregnant in spite of using precaution and being told it happen to two out of hundred people and she just had to be one out of the unfortunate two.
Like the father of her child moving countries away before she had a chance to tell him about it and never bothering to look back.
Like Bella laying on the grass outside that hospital, praying for death as she lost consciousness only to wake up hours later to Dr Marjorie Davis giving her the news that her baby may have some heart defects.
She wasn't sitting opposite Dr. Silver today because miracles happen. She was there because she had been fighting tooth and nail ever since. She had been fighting for the sake of her daughter, and now that daughter was about to be cruelly taken from her and she was expected to fold her hands and watch it happen because, 'miracles happen, my ass'
"Dr. Silver, we've been on the waiting list for two years now." She spoke calmly to make him see reasons. When her daughter first joined the queue for heart transplants, there were over a hundred and seventy people on the waiting list that were children in London alone and it has barely dwindle in the last year.
"You told me time is running out and do you understand that I'll have no life without my baby? She's all I have, she's my life! I beg you doctor, take my heart and let my daughter live."
Her eyes had glossed over by the time she finished speaking. Normally Bella would fight the tears and put on a brave face but today she didn't, if playing the doctor's sympathy was the way to get what she wanted then so be it.
Dr. Silver watched her passively, she held his gaze despite the tears blurring her vision. She needed for him to see her unyielding resolve.
"I heard you stop going to the support sessions?"
Bella blinked, temporarily thrown off course. She wasn't expecting him to pull that card. "Erh..uhm, I..I've been busy." She said and it wasn't a lie, being a realtor after getting into Daniel's business with the properties he left her and being a mother who try to spend as much time with her daughter as possible was pretty time consuming.
"I'm not depress, I'm not in denial. I'm not even mad at the world, even though I have every right to be. I've accepted that it's not a fair place we live, this is my fate and I accept that, too, but my daughter? She's young and...and...vibrant, she have a whole future ahead of her, she can be anything and everything I will never be. I need to do this for her, doctor."
Dr. Silver continued to silently regard her, with his lips thinning out on his face until it became a firm line. He sighed and ran a hand down his face while Bella held her breath, hoping she had finally gotten him to agree with her. She was a desperate mother.
"Tell you what," Dr. Silver said, leaning his forearms back on his desk. His phone suddenly blared up it ringtone before he could continue and a familiar voice filled the office.
Bella was over familiar with the song and the voice of the singer, the song was titled 'rejuvenate' from an album called 'credibility'. It was the third album by a renowned musician generally known as 'Clouds'. The album was released two years ago and got about three awards tied to it honor including a Grammy. There has been two more album from the same musician, making it a total of five albums in a past five years by Clouds, 'the guy who took the music industry by storm. The savior of pop, acoustic, country and folk music'. That's how his millions of fans lovingly describe him.
"Ms. Campbell?"
Bella blinked rapidly again and came back to the present to realize Dr. Silver had shut off the phone and was apologizing for the interruption. She raised her brows at with a coy smirk, Dr. Silver especially seemed to be obsessed with Clouds and that was something that fascinate Lyric about him but Bella just found it amusing. The man change his ringtone almost every week and it had to be one of Clouds' songs.
"Really? Rejuvenate?" Bella asked teasingly and the doctor's cheeks turned a light shade of pink. That song was a detailed masterpiece about wet dreams.
"Don't judge me, it's a bloody good song and I have a life outside this hospital you know." He replied, shuffling papers around on his desk to avoid her eyes for a moment.
"Bloody good erotic song is more like it." Bella smiled in spite of herself, Dr. Silver was easy to tease and she found him cute whenever he got flustered like that. He was a man in his mid thirties probably, and really not bad to look at. She sometimes idly wonder what his life outside the hospital was like.
"And as I was saying." He cleared his throat and went back to his semi-serious, semi-concerned look. "I'm willing to bring up your proposition with the team if you go back to the group support sessions."
Bella groaned, her shoulders slouching dejectedly.
"I know, I know." Dr. Silver kept talking. "You're not depress or in denial but indulge me, will you? Just a few sessions until my next appointment with Lyric and we'd talk."
Without much choice left she got up to leave, stopping at the door when the doctor spoke again.
"Speaking of ups and downs we've been through together over the years." He started with a smile that made him looked all the more roguish. "I certainly consider your new blond hair an up." He made an 'ok' sign with his fingers and winked at her.
Flirting, flirting, flirting.
Bella smiled back at him ruefully before stepping out of his office.

Minutes later found Bella walking out of St. Barnabas Teaching Hospital a little more dejected and frustrated than when she walked in. Her body couldn't be bothered to maintain her farce elegant pose anymore, instead she dragged her feet towards her car like a woman that have been beaten down by the world.
Nobody understood her or her desperation to save her daughter and frankly, she was tired of blaming them.
No one will ever truly understand, they have no idea what she had been through. She was the one who had her child at the loneliest and lowest time in her life.
After she was discharge from that hospital seven years ago, she had nothing.
No Daniel, no Iverson and no home. She was never going to step foot in their apartment again and she meant it when she said she wanted nothing to do with her mother. So she was literally homeless, alone and pregnant.
The only thing akin to a miracle that happened to her was Daniel's lawyer finding her in the hospital and telling her Daniel made her his 'next of kin' with everything he owed. It gave her the right to have his body cremated and the minute she was out of the hospital, she ditched her mother's last name- Wright and fled Metropolis with Daniel's ashes.
She never looked back either.
Before stepping into her Passat R36, the large image on the Billboard across the street caught her eyes and she let herself get carried away by staring at it. That smirk still made her pulse quicken every time she saw it, but it most definitely have that same effect on a lot of women and girls now.
She couldn't see the intensity of his eyes from where she stood but that was okay, she knew those eyes like no one else. He was somebody that she used to know, a stranger with a well known face.
She got into her car with a deep sigh, she should get on the move if she wanted to make it to the day's group session. The earlier she get that started to please doctor Silver, the better. Nothing will change her mind though, Bella would be clawing her heart out with her own bare hands before letting anything happen to her daughter.
As her car roared to life so did the radio and there it was, that damn voice again. A song from his newest album was playing on the radio, Bella angrily punched the device until it was off and she exhaled loudly at the peace and quiet that followed.
She had nothing against the song or the voice, no on the contrary, she purchased every single one of his album and raised her child with his music like it was the fúcking Bible.
It was her only way of keeping the father in the daughter's life, because she may never have the opportunity or the inclination to tell him about Lyric but she wasn't about to keep that secret from her daughter like her own mother did.
Sometimes though, a whole lot of times actually, she wished he wasn't every goddamn where. Bella knew she would have been just fine without knowing about his engagement to that model- Giraffe or whatever her name was.

An hour later found Bella in the midst of struggling parents like herself, the group session in progress. She listened impassively to a woman giving a tearful narration of what her son was going through and how much being helpless hurt her.
Bella knew the woman well, she would even go as far as calling her a friend. Her name is Victoria Micawolf, Bella met her when she first joined the group two years ago. Then they realised they have more in common. Victoria's son Aiden is in the same Academy as Bella's daughter, Lyric. He is already six years old and battling with sickle cell anemia. He and Lyric have an infatuation with eachother.
"Isabella, how is Lyric doing?" The matron of the group turned the attention to Bella once Victoria was done.
Her daughter's name didn't fail to bring a smile to Bella's face, Lyric was the light of her world. "She is great." Bella replied with a smile but sensed the group wanted her to say more.
"She's turning 6 in a few weeks." She offered with an unwavering smile.
"Oh wonderful. Do you both have plans for the occasion?" Another woman asked.
"Yes, she wants to go ice skating." Bella grinned. "But her Academy, the shooting star Academy would be having a charity ball on that day, so we agree to go to the rink after. She's been chosen to play violin for the special guest and she won't miss the event for the world." Her pride and joy in her daughter was evident for everyone to see as she spoke. They all genuinely smiled back at her.
"I'm sorry, what does your daughter have?" A man spoke up. Bella turned to glare at him, her smile freezing on her face in a way that made it look like a grimace.
She had never seen the man before, so he must be new and it was normal for everyone in the group to know what the other person's child have.
"She was born with congenital heart defect." Bella said lowly, not caring if the man heard her or not. This was rather something she hate talking about, it brought back dreadful memories she'd rather keep at bay.
"Half of her heart didn't develop properly and the other half had a hole in it." She managed to voice out before her throat close up.
The man looked pale and whispered a quick apology before averting his eyes from Bella's. She closed her eyes and try to get rid of the image of her tiny little girl getting ready for an open heart surgery within 24hours of her birth.
"Have the doctors said anything recently?" The matron of the group asked again.
"No." Bella lied, she was done talking and about time they moved on to the next person.
The doctors did say something recently, they told her they only have two months left to find a suitable heart for her daughter.
She swore she'd not let anything happen to her daughter. If they want a heart, they should take hers and if they say they can't, unless in the course of an untimely death, then untimely death she would give them.
She was a mother, willing to die for a daughter without a second thought.

If anyone is confuse with what's going on in this chapter, I'm sorry, don't give up on me just yet. I'll try to explain it a bit here.
So there's been a time jump and this chapter happens seven years after the last chapter where Bella found out she was pregnant and Iverson's sister already flew him to Los Angeles.
Now Bella have a daughter, Lyric (we will meet her soon) who have a heart defect and needs an urgent transplant. The whole gist of this chapter is that, Lyric have limited time to live and Bella is planning on sacrificing her heart for her daughter.
And Oh, Iverson is a popular musician now!
I hope I haven't made it even more confusing? Please stay with me and don't forget to vote and let me know what you think!
All the love.
