Scavenger Hunt

I woke up to a huge headache. Morning already. I roll over and turn off my alarm and get up. I sigh and start to get ready by taking a shower and putting clothes on. Usually I would just reach in my closet and pull out a set of clothes, but today I have the motivation of actually looking nice. I pick out the best and when I was pleased I put on my clothes and looked in the mirror. I went back into the bathroom, looking through the cabinets to find whatever makeup I can.

I find my mom’s makeup bag and open it, revealing foundation, eyeliner, mascara and more. I take out most of the makeup and ponder a second on how to use any of this. I then start to apply the makeup to my face until I like the way it looks. I clean up and complement myself that I did a good job on my makeup for the first time and headed out.

“Mom, I going to school!” I said as I passed her in the kitchen and walk out the door. When I walk out I stop for a second to see Jin’s car in the driveway. Jin looks up and gets out of the car to open the door for me on the passenger.

“I was about to text you that I will be picking you up.” Jin laughs as I get in and Jin starts up the car.

When Jin and I reach the school, Jin opens the door for me to get out and I grab my bookbag.

“You know,” I turn to Jin who turned to face me. “You don’t have to open the door everytime I get in or out of the car.” I said.

“I know.” Jin laughed and we walked into the school building.

“See you later?” Jin asked before we split. I nodded my head and went on my way to my locker, passing Namjoon and Rachel in the hallway. I reached my locker and grabbed my books and went to first period.

I walked into class and went to a desk that was far away from where Namjoon and I used to sit. Students came in one after another picking seats. I look over to the seat next to me that was still empty. I hope someone takes it before Namjoon comes in.

I thought too soon. Namjoon came into the classroom and looked around. His eyes found the open desk next to me and he smiled from the corner of his mouth.

Namjoon walks over and places his stuff on the desk next to mine and sits. I look straight, keeping my eyes forward to avoid contact with him.

“Hey.” Namjoon looks over. I kept my mouth shut and drummed my fingers on the desk.

“Okay class! Today we are going on a campus scavenger hunt!” The teacher said when coming in the class room. The whole classroom groans as the teacher grabs a stack of papers off his desk and hands them out to the class.

“I am going to hand everyone a piece of paper that has items that you need to find throughout the school. Theses items are printed on a card that are hidden through the school and are connected to the topic we have been learning about for the past few days.” The teacher said after finishing handing out papers.

“Every other row is paired up with the person to the right.” I slowly looked over ironically to Namjoon grinning real wide at me.

“I guess we have to talk to each other then.” Namjoon smiled.

“Don’t get your hopes too high.” I roll my eyes and get up to start the scavenger hunt.

“What do we have to do first!” Namjoon followed me down the hall.

“The gym.” I said and began to walk fast, Namjoon trying to keep up with me. We reached the gym and began to search for the card that printed the items that we need.

“Over there!” I pointed to the card that was stuck between the backboard and the hoop of the basketball goal. Namjoon and I ran over and Namjoon jumped to get the card, but failed.

“I can’t reach it, maybe if I lift you up, you could reach it.” Namjoon said. No matter how objected I was of Namjoon touching me, I was quite competitive so I talked myself in to it.

“Okay.” Namjoon bent down and I threw my legs in between his head and sat on his shoulders. Namjoon clutched my legs and slowly stood up.

“Can you get it?” Namjoon called out. I stretched out my hand and reached for the card that was only a few centimeters away from being in my grip.

“Almost there…” I reached harder and could feel Namjoon lifting up on his toes. I felt the card in my hand and smiled.

“I got it! I got-“ I came tumbling down, as well as Namjoon. I shut my eyes and landed on something firm rather than the hard floor.

“Sungmin?” I heard Namjoon call out. I opened my eyes slowly to see Namjoon’s face close to mine. I look around and realize I’m on top of him. I react and get off of him fast.

“Sungmin I can’t believe-“ Namjoon laughing.

“Don’t talk about it.” I snapped and went and grabbed the fallen card.

“Let’s go.” I barked. Namjoon happily followed behind.

We reached the library not to mention on the way we found eight cards which means we need two more cards. We went walking around, looking around in the shelves and searching through the chair and tables.

“Sungmin, I found one.” Namjoon called out. I walked over to where he was and looked at the card and back at my paper.

“Good job, I think the last card should be in the lunch room.” I began to walk when Namjoon caught my arm.

“Sungmin we’ve already been there. Pretty much everywhere. Besides the janitors closet. I don’t think anyone has thought to check there.” I agreed and we went out down the hall to the janitor’s closet.

We walked in and began to look around and stopped when we heard the door shut. Crap it’s one of those doors that unlocks from the outside. I run to the door and pull on the handle.

“Crap! Were stuck Namjoon. What are we going to do?” I began pacing back and forth and panicking in the small room. Namjoon grabs my arm making me jerk to a stop.

“Stop, that’s getting really annoying.” I make a mean look at Namjoon.

“We can just wait for the janitor to come or I can call someone to get us out of here.” I nod and take a seat on the floor while Namjoon pulls out his phone and probably calling Rachel. He talks for a moment and hangs up.

“Okay they are going to call the janitor from home to come and unlock us because he is the only one that has the key to this closet.” Namjoon said and I let out a breath of relief.

“But, it will take up to thirty minutes.” Namjoon prepared himself from my reaction, but I just sat there and pulled out my phone to text Jin. Namjoon comes over and sits next to me and looks over my shoulder.

“I’m here to talk, but you decide to talk to Jin? That’s rude.” I roll my eyes and put my phone back in my pocket.

“Fine, what do you want to talk about? Wait, there’s nothing to talk about.” I turned to Namjoon. Namjoon lets out a long breath and replies.

“Look, since were stuck in here for a while, why don’t we figure things out.” I crossed my arms and sat up straight.

        “I’m listening.” I said.

“I’m sorry all of this happened. I didn’t mean to make you upset and I didn’t know this could hurt you so bad, but all I want is my best friend back. No one can ever replace you, not even Rachel. So all I’m asking is for you to forgive me. Please.” Namjoon bit his lip. I let out a couple tears and quickly wiped them away.

“I don’t know…” I mumbled. That’s all I can think of right now as an answer.

“Come on, please. I miss you Sungmin. I miss seeing you every day and I don’t know what I will do without you. I need you.” I looked down and laced my fingers together. I don’t even know what to say so I just slowly nod.

Namjoon smiles and embraces me in his arms and I began to cry. Honestly deep inside I do miss my best friend, my first crush, but it still hurts. So maybe that cheesy love phrase is true. Time heals a broken heart. And so now I must wait for time to do it’s healing. Namjoon and I break away and I wipe my tears away from my eyes.

“So are we good?” Namjoon ask.

        “Were good.” I replied.

At that moment the door unlocked and me and Namjoon walked out to a crowd of people.

“Namjoonie!” Rachel runs up to Namjoon and hugs him around his neck. I got caught in their moment and then someone gave me my own hug.

“I’m glad you’re okay.” Jin said. I accepted his hug and replied, “Me too.”

I’m so excited it’s lunch because I’m so hungry. I go through the lunch line and pay for my food. I walk out and look around the room to spot Jin waving at me.

“Hey.” Jin smiled. I followed him to a table and sat down.

“So you and Namjoon made up?” Jin said after me explaining all what happened when we were stuck in the janitor’s closet.

“I guess so.” I took a bite of my food, but then almost gagging from the awful taste of fake chicken nuggets. I push my plate away and forgot how school food is so disgusting.

Jin and I talked away for the rest of the lunch time. I just sat there and admired his pretty face. Jin, after he finished talking, took out his phone to check the time.

“I have to go.” Jin said. I nodded and before Jin left, he slipped his hand under the table and grabbed my hand. His fingers ran over my knuckles and then he let go and walked away.

I sat there alone for a few more minutes and got up. I walked to my locker, grabbed books that I need for my last class of the day and went to the classroom.

The moment I walked in there I was greeted by Namjoon as Rachel stood behind him. I smiled lightly and took a seat near Namjoon.

The teacher walked in and I took out some paper to take notes. Instead of taking notes I left the real world and traveled into my own world. I snapped out of it when the teacher hit my desk with a ruler, which made me jump.

“Pay attention Ms. Sungmin.” The teacher snapped. I blinked the blurriness from my eyes and focused on the teacher’s lesson.

The door opened to Jin walking into the classroom. My eyes got wide and I wonder what he is doing. Jin goes to the teacher and they discuss something in a low whisper. The teacher nods of what Jin is telling him and he walks out, only coming back in, with another person behind him, carrying a guitar.

“Sungmin.” Jin said. I sat there unable to move, waiting to see what will happen next. The guy with the guitar pulled up a chair and began to strum.

“Your smile brings me to life,” Jin began to sing. My heart dropped and I can feel everyone’s eyes on me. “You’re laugh wants me to call you mine.”

“Your story is what makes you strong… and thats what I love about you because you share the same things with me.” Jin continued going into the pre-chorus.

“And I know I don’t deserve you, but I want to be with you.” I shook my head, tears swelling in my eyes.

“Cause this is a love song to you. I want to be with you, I want to be with you.” Jin sang the chorus. “This is a love song to you. I want to be with you. Will you want to be with me?” I didn’t even know Jin could even sing, but he was actually really good.

“And all I treasure are all these little things we have, the memories, trapped inside my head that I won’t forget.” Jin went back into the chorus till the song ended. He walked up closer to me and went down on one knee and held out a rose. The class gasped and whispered to each other.

“Sungmin, will you go out with me?” I stood up and covered my mouth with my hands. I didn’t even have to make a decision when I already knew what the answer was.

“Yes…” I nodded my head fast and accepted the rose. I heard everyone awe and cheer in the background. Jin stood up and hugged me real tight, as for me I did the same.
