Chapter Twenty-Three: Luca

By the time the court date rolls around, Luca's anxiety is worse than it has ever been before. He has never been one to let his emotions control him, but as he lays in bed wide awake, he knows he can no longer ignore them.

Turning his head, Luca watches as Jamie rests. The other man is fast asleep, his lips parted and his breaths heavy. It is reassuring to have Jamie next to him, but Luca still feels incomplete. As gently as he can, he stands up. Jamie sleeps on, completely undisturbed by the bed moving.

The sun is just starting to rise, casting a faint light through the blinds as Luca walks down the hall to the nursery.

Noelle is just as fast asleep as Jamie, her legs scrunched up beneath her stomach, arms thrown above her head. Luca is a pro at moving his daughter when she is still asleep, carefully scooping her up so she rests against his chest. She snuffles against his shirt before letting out such a big sigh for such a small person.

Luca presses a soft kiss to her head while carrying her back to the master bedroom. Once they are all together in the bed, blankets tucked close, Luca can feel some of his anxiety decrease, but it is not completely gone.

His mind wanders to the events of the day. This is perhaps the most nervous he has been since he sat for his boards. Becca is meeting them at the courthouse, but he can't help but feel it will not be enough.

Honestly, he does not know what he would do without Noelle or Jamie. They are his family now, and to lose one of them would be losing a piece of himself.

Letting out a deep breath, he walks into the kitchen and starts the coffee pot. He needs to get his mind off of what is coming up, at least for a little bit. The house is quiet, everyone asleep, including Draco and Arry. The two of them are cuddled on in the bed specially made for them in the window seat.

The light is just starting to peek inside the curtains, giving the living room a blow. Through the kitchen window, he sees the misty rain coming down. He can't wait until summer comes when he can take his family to the coast and enjoy some sunshine.

With that picture in his mind, his family together, going on fun adventures, he starts on breakfast. It is simple enough, seeing as Jamie put it together last night. Luca isn't the only nervous one in the household.

As the french toast casserole cooks in the oven, Luca sips his coffee, starting the electric fireplace in the living room, so it is nice and warm. It may be spring, but living in the Pacific Northwest means having to deal with rain well into June.

Just as he is sitting down on the couch, he hears Noelle wake up over the monitor. She always tends to grunt as she wakes up, stretching her little body, and blinking her eyes for a few minutes before she starts to whine for someone to get her.

The clock on the fireplace reads a little after 7:00. She actually slept in today, the one day when Luca couldn't appreciate it.

Setting down his coffee, he quietly makes his way up to her room. Luca is just stumbling out of their room.

"Morning," Jamie mumbles, voice still filled with sleep.

Luca walks up to his boyfriend, wrapping his arms around the sleep-warm body. Jamie practically melts into him, burying his face into Luca's neck. Luca can't help but breathe in Jamie's comforting scent, placing a few kisses into his hair.

"What are you doing up?" Luca says.

"Heard Noelle, so I knew it must be time to get up."

Luca chuckles. "Sorry about that. I was hoping to get her before she woke you."

Jamie looks up at him, his smile warming Luca more than the fire downstairs. He can't help but bend down, taking those full lips in his. Jamie meets his kiss, with just as much enthusiasm, but before it can get anywhere super fun, Noelle starts to cry.

"Little cock block," Jamie murmurs against Luca's lips. "She's lucky she's cute."

Luca hums taking one more kiss from Jamie before forcing himself to pull away. "Go get ready. Breakfast is cooking and I'll get our baby before she starts the tears."

That gets Jamie going. "Oh please do. When she turns on the waterworks..." A truly distraught look causes Jamie's face as he turns to head back into their bedroom, mumbling to himself "If she cries, I'll start crying... again."

Rolling his eyes in fond exasperation, Luca walks to the nursery. The love Jamie has for Noelle, takes his breath away, whenever he thinks about it. And he knows the waterworks scenario isn't an exaggeration. Last time Noelle cried when she bonked her head a couple of days ago, Jamie wouldn't even put her down for her nap. Luca wasn't dumb enough to suggest that she was okay. He knew the cuddles were more for Jamie's well being than Noelle's.

Noelle is sitting in her crib, attempting to pull herself up, but not succeeding. She is getting close, but Luca knows she still has a while before she is standing on her own, but she still tried anyway.

"Dada dada," She babbles, a smile on her face as soon as she sees Luca. Her curls are in disarray, flat on one side from her sleeping.

"Hi, baby."

She cuddles into him as soon as he picks her up, her arms tucked underneath her. "Did you sleep well?"

"Dada dada..." she sleepily murmurs. Luca presses kisses into her curls, breathing in her baby scent.

As he sets her down on the changing table, she yawns, rubbing her eyes. She babbles to him, yawning intermittently as he changes her diaper and puts her in a new outfit. Jamie had bought this outfit specifically for this date, knowing that they all needed to look the best they could. He put all of his trust behind his partner when it comes to their daughter's clothes. Jamie knew more about all of it than he did.

Noelle kicks her legs as he puts on her thermal tights, and her little black Mary Jane's, but cuddles into him again once he picks her up. He is careful not to wrinkle her dress, knowing that Jamie will kill him if he does. Jamie had spent good money on this dress, a satin sky-blue dress, almost the same shade as her eyes. The bottom half is made of lace of the same color.

Luca takes her into the kitchen, cuddling her as he warms up her bottle. She takes the bottle from him once it is ready, holding it herself. It hurts his heart a little to see how much she has grown, from a tiny newborn into an actual little person.

"Please tell me there is some coffee left," Jamie says, walking into the kitchen as he rolls up his cuffs.

"Please, I don't have a death wish." Luca grabs a mug, pouring a fresh cup of steaming coffee before handing it to Luca.

"I knew you were smart."

Jamie stands next to him once he has his coffee, taking a sip before leaning his head on Luca's shoulder. "Why don't you get ready, and I'll fix Noelle's hair. We all need to look our best today."

The timer goes off as Luca is walking out of the kitchen, the smell of sugar and cinnamon making his stomach growl. He is quick in getting ready, knowing they have to leave soon. They need to be at the courthouse at 8:45 and it is already 8:00.

By the time he makes it back down to the kitchen, Jamie has Noelle's curls perfectly styled, the bottom half brushed while the top half is tied back in a bow. She looks absolutely perfect, no different than normal.

"Here's your food, you eat while I drive us to the courthouse." Jamie hands him a bowl, holding Noelle in his other arm. She has a teddy tucked under her arm, her head resting on Jamie's shoulder. It looks like he isn't the only one who is still tired. "You ready?"

Luca feels his heart start to pick up, his nerves firing once again. "Not really."

Jamie steps up to him, pulling him down into a kiss. "It's going to be fine. They'll see that we are perfect today, and we are the best parents for Noelle. Becca's parents aren't the best fit for our daughter, and even Becca knows that." He gives Luca another kiss. "Just try to relax, love."

Luca nods, but his nerves are still high. After turning off the fireplace, he holds Jamie's hand as they walk to the car. He just hopes that everything goes as well today as Jamie thinks it will.

Closing his eyes, he breathes in the cold, damp air, sending up a silent prayer to whoever may be listening that he doesn't lose his family today.
