Understanding

Lindsey woke up before Stevie; she laid snuggled close to him, her head laying on his chest.
He smiled as he watched her sleep.

Lindsey felt so happy to be lying next to Stevie; the woman he has loved since the age of sixteen.
He didn't want it to end; but he knew there time together was running out.
Kristen would be back soon and he would have to go home.

He kissed the top of Stevie's head and decided to get some more sleep; at least he was with the love of his life.

It was late afternoon when Stevie woke up. She stretched then groaned but had a smile on her face as she remembered last nights events.
She turned over and saw that Lindsey wasn't lying next to her.
She sat up and said. "Lindsey?"
She got out of bed and put her robe around herself. She tide it securely then went in search for him.

Stevie checked the bathroom first but didn't find him there. So she walked downstairs; maybe he was in the kitchen.

As she approached the living room however she heard Lindsey's raised voice. "Who are you?"
Stevie rushed in and saw Lindsey in his pajamas standing in front of Will.
Will didn't have class today so he had come over to Stevie's to have lunch with his father. Karen had let him in.

"Dad, it's me...Will." Will said with a trembling voice. This was the first time he was experiencing one of his father's episodes first hand.
Lindsey looked at Will in confusion and said. "Dad?"

Stevie walked up to Lindsey and stood by his side wrapping an arm around his waist. "Linds...it's okay. Will is your son."
Lindsey looked at Stevie. "Stevie...what..." he said as he scratched his head. "We have a son together? Why can't I remember?"
"No Linds..." Stevie began but Will cut her off.
"You had a little accident dad. It happened yesterday, you hit your head and it made you lose your memory but don't worry the doctor said it was temporary and you should get it back in a few days." Will said calmly; he remembered what his mom had said to him before she left. If he had happened to be with Lindsey during an episode he should just go along with it and not panic. Will walked up to Stevie and put a hand on her shoulder. "Right mom? Dad's going to be fine."
Tears began to form in Stevie's eyes but held them in. She nodded her head and said softly. "Yeah...that's right."

Will got close to Stevie's ear and whispered. "Just go along with it. It's going to be okay."
Stevie nodded.
Will then stood in front of Lindsey. "I came over to check on you and since I didn't have any classes today I figured maybe we can eat lunch together. Mom, I'll make us something to eat while you and dad go get dressed."

Stevie felt as if she was in daze but she walked back to her bedroom, Lindsey following behind.
Once inside, she closed the door then walked to the bathroom.
"Wow! I can't believe this! Wow Steph! We have a son!" Lindsey exclaimed, his face lit up.
"Yeah..." was all Stevie said before saying. "I'm going to shower then we can go back down and have lunch with Will."
"I'll shower with you!" Lindsey said taking a step forward.
"No!" Stevie practically yelled. "I mean...why don't you just go and spend time with Will. Maybe it'll help bring back your memory."
Lindsey looked confused as to why she was acting that way but then agreed.
Lindsey quickly changed then walked back downstairs to the kitchen.

Stevie showered; if she was going to be honest she did want Lindsey join her but knowing that Will was in the house made it a bit awkward. Plus, he was having an episode, she didn't feel right about taking advantage of that.

Once showered and dressed, Stevie made her way to the kitchen.
Lindsey's laughter filled the room.
Stevie smiled at the sound.

Will had just got done with cooking lunch and was making Lindsey laugh.
Will looked over and saw Stevie. "Hey St...mom. Lunch is ready."
"Thank you Will." Stevie said quietly.

Will served them all and set their plates around the kitchen table.
They all sat down; Karen walked in and if she had been a complete stranger she would have thought that she had just walked into a family eating together.

No one had noticed Karen so, she backed out of the kitchen to give them some time alone.
She could tell by Stevie's body language and from the few words she managed to hear that Lindsey was having an episode.

After a while, Will looked at the time and saw that it was almost time to pick up his sisters from school.
Will decided to tell Lindsey that he had two daughters.

When Will left, Lindsey felt overwhelmed but looked at Stevie and smiled.
"Steph, in so happy! We have a family together! Too bad I had that accident, I wish I could remember." Lindsey said.
Stevie was trying to keep it together on the outside. But on the inside she felt like she was dying.
She put a fake smile on her face and said. "You'll remember soon enough. Don't worry."

Once his sisters were in the car, Will told them that their father was having an episode. He told them to pretend that Stevie was their mother and that he told Lindsey he had a head injury.

They were quiet the whole back to Stevie's; they weren't too sure about having to go along with this plan.

Stevie opened the door once she saw them walking up to the front door.
"It's okay now. His episode has passed. There's no need to play along anymore." Stevie said with a bit of sadness in her eyes.
She had a smile on her face however; she didn't want them to see the pain she was feeling.

Leelee and Stella smiled and ran into the house to greet their father. They were happy they didn't have to see him during an episode.
Will and Stevie walked inside.
Will could tell Stevie was hurting.

"I'm going up to my bedroom for a while." Stevie said softly. "You and your sisters can help yourself to anything in the kitchen. Just don't over do it, Karen is making dinner for all of us. It'll be ready by the time your mom gets here."
Will nodded then asked. "Stevie...are you okay?"
Stevie smiled a little. "Yes, I'm fine."

Will watched as Stevie walked up the stairs; he was worried about her.
He checked in on his sisters and Lindsey then excused himself; he told them he was heading to the bathroom.

Will walked upstairs and went to Stevie's bedroom.
The door was halfway closed, he could hear sniffling; he knew Stevie was crying.
He knew he should knock but he opened the door a bit more and peaked inside.

Will could see Stevie lying in her bed, her back facing him. He could tell she was holding something in her hands.
He stood frozen in the doorway for a few seconds deciding whether he should leave or if he should try to find some way to comfort her.
He took a deep and breath and said. "Stevie, are you okay?"

Stevie gasped and sat up then quickly tried to wipe her tears away, but it was no use, they just kept rolling down her cheeks.
"Will! Yes, yes I'm fine." She said trying to sound normal.
Will took a step forward, a worried look on his face. "No, you're not. What's wrong? Do you feel sick?"

Stevie stared at Will; she didn't want to open up to him. But, how was she going to convince him that she was okay. "Will...I'm fine. I'm just having a moment."
Will stepped forward and sat down on her bed facing her. He saw picture that now on the side of the bed. "What's that?"
Stevie looked then picked it back up; she sighed, she just decided to show him. She didn't know why, this was personal but he was so concerned for her.

Will stared at the photo; he noticed it was an ultrasound photo. He took it from her and looked at it.
Stevie looked down at her hands.
"When your father had his episode earlier...it gave me a glimpse of what could have been." Stevie said, fresh tears rolling down her cheeks. "That photo was of my...baby that I lost. They would have been a few years older than you." She bit her lip then said. "When we sat down to eat lunch, I...for a moment I pretended that you were that baby. I pretended that they survived. When you called me mom, my heart ached because I never got to hear my own child say it. I'm sorry. I feel embarrassed for even doing that."

Will's eyes teared up. "I'm sorry Stevie. I wouldn't have done that had I known. It's just that...it the first thing that came to mind when I realized my dad was going through an episode."
"No. You don't have to be sorry, you didn't know." Stevie said. "Anyway, like I said, I'm just having a moment. Go back downstairs and be with Lindsey. I'll join you all shortly."

Will handed back the photo then stood up. "I'm sorry about your baby Stevie. They would have been lucky to have a mom like you."
Will hugged her, Stevie hugged him back and closed her eyes. "Thank you Will."
They pulled apart and Will walked out of Stevie's bedroom closing the door behind him.
Stevie laid back down and curled up into a ball.

Stevie didn't come back down until Karen had started cooking dinner.
Stevie had freshened up and composed herself.
She looked at the time; Kristen would be there soon.
Stevie became nervous; she wasn't sure if she could face Kristen after sleeping with Lindsey.

Before she knew it, Kristen was walking through the door being greeted by her children and Lindsey.

Stevie greeted her shyly then they all talked for a bit in the living room before Karen announced dinner was ready.

They all sat and ate their dinner with some chatter here and there.
After they finished eating, the children wanted to swim in the pool before heading home.
Stevie of course said it was okay.

Lindsey joined his children in the pool.
Stevie helped Karen with the dishes and helped clean up.

Karen excused herself when everything was cleaned and put in their place.
Stevie made some tea for herself and Kristen.
Kristen was quiet as she had something weighing heavily on her mind.

Once they were seated in the living room, Kristen said. "Thank you Stevie for letting Lindsey stay with you. I don't know what I would done if you hadn't."
Stevie sipped her tea then said. "It was no problem. I'm glad I could help." She didn't meet Kristen's eyes.
"How did things go? Everything okay?" Kristen asked.
Stevie told her everything that had happened minus what went on between her and Lindsey.

"Wow. I can't believe he got physical with you and hurt you." Kristen said with worry written all over face.
Kristen composed herself; after a few moments of silence Kristen looked at Stevie and could sense there was more. Stevie hardly could look at Kristen.
Kristen knew what it was that Stevie wasn't telling her.
"You and Lindsey....slept together didn't you?" Kristen asked.
Stevie looked into Kristen's eyes; tears threatened to fall. Stevie looked down in shame and nodded her head. "Yes." She whispered.
"I'm sorry Kristen. I..."
"No." Kristen interrupted. "It's okay."

Stevie looked up again, why was Kristen so calm about this.
Kristen smiled a little. "I knew the moment I left him here that it was going to happen." She sighed then continued. "I'm not mad Stevie."

Stevie looked at Kristen in bewilderment. "How...how can you be so calm about this? Don't you want to yell at me? Call me names? I don't know, hit me?"
"Well, if I'm honest...if you and Lindsey had had an affair before he was diagnosed, then yes. I would yell at you, call you names...I don't know if I would hit you." Kristen couldn't help but chuckle. "I would have been angry, yes. But...after Lindsey was diagnosed with Alzheimer's....he and I have had so many conversations about anything and everything. That was something we didn't have before. I mean, yes we talked, but not like this. We've had many conversations about you, and...he's told me he still loves you and cares about you. You were his first love. He said he wanted one night with you before he couldn't remember you anymore. He's been afraid of that; when he goes through an episode, he's forgotten everyone else but you. Even though I can't really understand what he is going through...I wanted him to have that night with you."

Stevie had tears rolling down her cheeks but couldn't speak.
"I see a huge difference in him. He looks so much happier." Kristen said after a moment with tears in her eyes. "That's thanks to you Stevie."

Stevie blinked a few times; she was shocked that Kristen had this reaction.
"Kristen...I...really don't know what to say." Stevie said.
"You don't have to say anything." Kristen said. Just then her face paled then excused herself to use the restroom.

Stevie took a moment and composed herself.
Kristen was gone a few minutes; Stevie began to worry about her.

Kristen finally came back and sat down on the sofa.
"Are you okay Kristen?" Stevie asked.
Kristen nodded then said. "Yes I'm fine."
Stevie wasn't buying it. "Are you sure? I mean, you look pale."
Kristen sighed then said. "During my business trip...I had gotten sick. I didn't have to stay an extra day for work. I was in the hospital and just got cleared to take a flight back home today this morning."
"What happened?" Stevie asked worriedly.
Kristen looked down and took a breath. "I..um...I found out that...I'm pregnant."
