Painfully Blindsided

Stevie laid on her side thinking about all that had happened and what she found out about Lindsey.
She didn't know if she could be there for Lindsey the way Kristen had asked. She didn't know how to handle it.
But she wanted to be there for Lindsey; the one person that had been through so much with her over the years.

She let her tears fall down her cheeks as the weight of Lindsey's diagnosis finally hit her. She cried herself to sleep that night, her dog Salumith by her side trying to comfort her.

The next few weeks went by without too much incident. Stevie was over at Lindsey's a few times and each time, Lindsey would bring up the past for Stevie.
Sometimes he would go back to the time of Rumours and others would be around the time of the Dance; and others he would go back to the apartment they once shared during their time as Buckingham Nicks,
other times would be just one of many other things that had happened over the years; it was as if he opened up a time capsule and would pull out things at random.
When Lindsey was lucid, he knew of Stevie's visits. When he was himself, he enjoyed spending time with Stevie again. They would sit and drink a cup of coffee or a glass of wine or just keep each other company.
However, he hated the fact that she had to see him like this; but a part of him was glad to have her close at this time. Who knew how long he had before everything was gone from his memory; his heart ached when he thought of the moment he would no longer remember Stevie.

There were times when Stevie could handle it and go along with him but others times it became too much.
Kristen was so grateful to Stevie for helping her through this.

One day, Kristen and Stevie sat on the kitchen table as Lindsey was napping, Stevie was quiet deep in thought.
Kristen filled both their cups with some freshly brewed tea.
"Everything alright Stevie?" Kristen asked with a small smile.
Snapping from her thoughts Stevie smiled back.
Then she sighed, her eyes filled with sadness. "Kristen, I don't know for how longer I can keep this up. I'm going to admit something to you but please don't get upset."
Kristen nodded.
"As you know, Lindsey has on many occasions, tried to kiss me. Each time I pulled away. The recent time, I almost didn't. I almost kissed him." Stevie said feeling ashamed as tears fell from her eyes. "I know he's not Lindsey anymore, I mean he is...he's the Lindsey of the past and when he's that Lindsey that I fell in love with...I can't help but..." she sobbed as she buried her face in her hands. "Maybe I shouldn't come back anymore."
Kristen grabbed her hand. "No! Stevie please!
I can't do this alone!" Kristen sobbed. "I can't...you being here has made a whole lot of difference. Please don't stop coming; I..need you Stevie."
Stevie couldn't speak; she just nodded her head.
"Stevie...if...it helps, you can be whatever it is that Lindsey needs you to be without worrying about my feelings. I've been reading some stories from families who went through or are going through it now; that, whatever their loved needs at that moment then they'll gladly give it to them. If he wants a kiss, then don't hold back and give it to him. If...he wants other things, then, that'll be okay too."
Stevie couldn't believe what she was hearing. She heard the pain in Kristen's voice at her last statement. Yes, she would be there for Lindsey and she would be there for Kristen; she would kiss him if that's what he wanted but to go beyond that Stevie couldn't even think about that. It was wrong; so wrong.

The next day, Stevie was laying in bed with Lindsey.
He leaned in for a kiss; Stevie about to pull away changed her mind and just let the kiss happen.
It was a tender kiss that deepen really quickly. Lindsey reached for Stevie's breast; she gasped then quickly pulled away.
"What's wrong Steph?" He said reaching for her hand.
She took his hand and sat back down. "Linds, we can't do that okay."
"But why Stevie? I want you. All of you."
Stevie closed her eyes and said simply. "I don't feel well. So not today okay?"
Lindsey cocked his head to the side and sighed "Okay Steph, come on, lay back down."
She did what he asked. She laid on her back and he laid close beside her.
Kristen came in with a tray of food for lunch for the three of them; she was already used to seeing Lindsey with Stevie laying in bed like this; fully clothed, Stevie never taking off her shoes. Kristen could always tell that Stevie was uncomfortable with how close Lindsey was but Stevie never complained, for which Kristen was grateful for. Even though it pained her to see her husband so close to his ex girlfriend, she knew he needed these moments with her when he had an episode.

Just then Lindsey moved down to Stevie's stomach and placed a hand on top of it. This took Stevie by surprise.
"Linds?! What are you doing?" She said wide eyed.
He smiled up at her. "Steph, I know you're only seven weeks but I can't wait to meet our baby and hold them in our arms."
Stevie felt the air rush out of her; why did he have to remember this, her most painful memory.
Kristen turned and stared at the scene in front of her. Stevie's face paled, pain written all over her face; Lindsey caressing her belly as he was oblivious to their reactions.
He continued to rub her belly and gave it gentle kisses. "Hey little one, I hope you look like your mother with her beautiful brown eyes. We love you."
Stevie closed her eyes as tears fell down her cheeks, she brought both hands up to her mouth to muffle the sobs.
Kristen couldn't help but cry too. Her heart broke for Stevie.
"Stephanie? Why are crying?" Lindsey asked finally noticing her tears.
Stevie quickly regained herself and faked as smile, tears still in her eyes. She placed a hand over his that was resting her stomach and said. "I'm just really happy Linds. I can't wait to meet them either."
He smiled and raised himself up and kissed her lips. Then pulled away and said. "I'm going to take a shower then I'll take you out for dinner! We have to celebrate!"
"Okay, I'll be waiting downstairs for you." Stevie whispered.
Lindsey stood up and walked towards the bathroom. He stopped and looked at Kristen. "Oh hi, uh, Kristen right? You must be Stevie's new assistant. Did you hear the news? I'm gonna be dad!"
Kristen gulped and cleared her throat and forced a smile. "Yes, I'm her new assistant. And congratulations."

Once the door closed to the bathroom, Stevie shot up from the bed and rushed downstairs. Kristen was right behind her.
Stevie was sobbing uncontrollably now; she grabbed her purse and was about to walk out the door.
"Stevie! Wait!" Kristen said, placing a hand on her shoulder.
Stevie stopped, her hand on the door handle. Stevie couldn't take it, she leaned into the door and slid onto the floor. She sobbed against the door until Kristen got down on the floor with her and put her arms around Stevie, bringing her close to her as she rocked her from side to side.
Stevie buried her face into Kristen's chest.

The minutes passed by as Stevie's sobs began to die down. She had a hand gripping Kristen's blouse tightly and the other was on her belly where her child once was.
"Oh, Stevie, I...didn't know you were pregnant. I'm so sorry you had to relive that." Kristen said gently.
"It was years before the Dance. I had been out of rehab for my addiction to Klonopin for about a year and we were trying to make our relationship work again. I had told Lindsey when I found out, I was seven weeks. We were so happy, I was going to be a mom. But...I lost them at nine weeks." Stevie said in a whisper, her voice filled with immense pain. "He caught me so off guard today. I wasn't expecting that...We hadn't spoken of what we lost in years. It...it was and still is too painful to...think about."
Kristen rubbed her back in comfort.

They both still sat on the floor, Stevie still being comforted by Kristen when Lindsey made his way downstairs.
Lindsey looked at them when he spotted them, his face full of confusion and concern.
"Kristen? Stevie? Is everything alright?"
Their heads turned towards him. Kristen stood up helping Stevie to stand.
Lindsey stared at Kristen and she knew that her husband was back. He then turned to Stevie; he noticed her tear stained face, her eyes red and puffy.
"Stevie? What happened? Are you alright?"
Stevie turned to look into his eyes and saw that Lindsey was now lucid. Of course he wouldn't remember what had happened moments ago upstairs.
Lindsey walked up to her and cupped her cheek. "Are you sick Steph? You're so pale. Come on, you should sit down." He grabbed her hand and led her to the sofa. He sat her down and sat next to her.
Stevie was not speaking; he was beginning to really worry. "Talk to me Stephanie."
Stevie just shook her head.
Lindsey looked to Kristen, pleading with his eyes to tell him what was going on.
Kristen sat on the other side of Stevie and held her hand. Stevie gave it a squeeze and nodded her head ever so slightly to let her know it was okay for Kristen to tell Lindsey what happened.
Kristen took a breath before speaking.

Lindsey stared in horror as he heard what happened; of what memory he made Stevie relive. Now it was his turn to relive it.
The images of her laying curled into a ball on the floor, her screams of pain as she held on to her abdomen, the blood staining the carpet.
"Oh Steph! I...I...god I'm sorry!" He pulled her into his arms as she began to sob again. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry..." He repeated.
They both clung onto each other, grieving once again for their child they didn't get a chance to meet. Both not daring of letting the other go.
