Help Me Stevie!

Finally back home, Lindsey was picked up at the airport by his wife Kristen.
He smiled when he saw her and wrapped his arms around her. "Hey beautiful, I've missed you!"
"I missed you too!" Kristen said giving him a kiss. "Let's get you home!"

Once Lindsey was home, he threw his suitcase to the side, checked the clock and saw his children wouldn't be home from school for another couple of hours.
He took his wife's hand and led the way to their bedroom.

After being together as husband and wife again in months, they held each other as they laid in bed. Both were trying to catch their breath.
Kristen laid her head on Lindsey's chest enjoying being with her husband again.

She held on tighter remembering her conversation she had had with Stevie and Mick about her husband's behavior these past few weeks of the tour. She was told about his episodes as the band had called them.
Kristen wanted Lindsey to see his doctor as soon as he had gotten home. But now she had hoped that maybe now that he was home, things would get better. Maybe the tour had taken its toll on him and he needed a break.
She decided not to mention the doctor just yet.

Lindsey spent most of his time with his family again. Catching up with his children and enjoying every minute of it.
It seemed that whatever Lindsey was going through had eased up a bit.

As the weeks passed, Kristen had noticed a decline in his behavior and had no choice but to make Lindsey go see his doctor.
Lindsey's episodes were becoming frequent now. She couldn't understand it. Was he doing drugs again as Mick suggested to her.

Lindsey would be fine one minute then the next he would tell her some horrible things and sometimes would ask who she was and who the children were. His children couldn't understand what was going on with their father. When he would say he didn't know them, they would feel extreme hurt.

Also he had been asking for Stevie. Kristen didn't know what to make of that. She knew he hadn't seen or talked to Stevie since he got home. Why would he be asking for her now?

Lindsey was put through so many tests, but all of them came back saying he was perfectly healthy. No drugs were found in his system.
There was more tests to be done and so many possibilities as to what was going with him.

Finally his doctor, put him through some tests to check out his memory, using flash cards and such.
Also, he saw a neurologist.
Lindsey thought it was a waste of time. He kept saying he was fine, of course Kristen pushed him to continue with all these tests.

After hours and hours of testing and Lindsey getting frustrated and having bouts of anger, his doctor came down to a possible diagnosis.
Kristen couldn't wrap her mind around what the doctor was telling them. How could they be going through this? Why him? Why them? Kristen had heard stories of his possible diagnosis and she would not in a million years think it could happen to her husband.

Lindsey stayed quiet throughout the entire conversation; Kristen and the doctor did most of the talking.
They left the doctor's office with their heads down and their hearts heavy.
How were they going to get through this?

A few months had passed and Kristen tried to stay strong for her family. Telling the kids was difficult. Most of the time they tried to spend as much time with their dad but when he would have his episodes, it had become too much, especially for their youngest, Stella. She would spend most of her time at the stables with her horses.

Lindsey was put on medications to help slow down the process. When Lindsey was himself, he knew there was no stopping it. There was no cure for it. He started to become depressed; he was becoming angry as well.
Kristen tried her best to get him through it but he was declining fast. His episodes were now lasting a longer which before they were short lived.
Also, when he would play his guitar, he would sometimes stare off in space trying to remember how to play or he would be playing a song and struggle to remember the next part.

By this time, Kristen sent the kids to stay with her mother.

One night, Lindsey had a very bad episode. He asked for Stevie, and like other times, Kristen wouldn't call Stevie to come.  When Kristen told him she wasn't coming, he lost it. He started tearing their bedroom apart; yelling and demanding to bring him Stevie.
Kristen was at her wits end and couldn't take it anymore. She gave in and called Stevie.

Stevie's assistant Karen knocked on her bedroom door.
"Come in." Karen heard her boss say.
"Stevie, Kristen's on the phone. She says it's urgent."
Stevie took the phone from Karen and said. "Hello."
"Stevie! Please! I need your help!" Kristen sobbed uncontrollably.
"What's going on Kristen? Is Lindsey alright?"
Stevie asked having a feeling of dread wash over her.
"No, he's not. Please Stevie! He's asking for you."
Stevie stayed quiet for a moment. As it was quiet, Stevie could clearly hear Lindsey yelling in the background. "I need to find Stevie! I haven't been able to find her! I think I lost her!"
Stevie was too shocked to speak.
"Stevie? Hello?" Kristen said as she continued to sob.
"I'm here." Stevie whispered.
"Please Stevie! I'm begging you! Maybe you can get through to him. Please!" Kristen said as her last word was a last plea for help.
"I'm on my way."

Karen drove Stevie over to Lindsey's which was a few minutes away from where Stevie lived.
It was almost 10 pm when they arrived.
Stevie walked up to the door; before she had a chance to knock, Kristen opened the door. She threw her arms around Stevie then led her into the house. Stevie looked into Kristen's bloodshot eyes from all the crying she was doing.
"Where is he?" Stevie asked.
"In the bedroom. Come on." Kristen said grabbing Stevie by the hand and leading her upstairs and into the bedroom.

Karen unsure what to do found her way into the living to wait for Stevie.

Kristen opened the door and led them inside.
The room was a wreck; it was as if a tornado touched down and blew the place apart.
"Lindsey? Guess who's here."
Lindsey looked up from his seat by the window, having exhausted himself from his tantrum.
"Stevie! You came!" Lindsey shot up and ran to her.
Stevie stood stunned at the state Lindsey was in.
He hugged her then brought his hands to cradle her face; placing his forehead to hers. "That lady told me you weren't coming Steph. I'm glad you did."
Stevie pulled away as he almost kissed her.
Her brow was furrowed in confusion. She turned to look at Kristen wanting some answers.
Trying not to look hurt by Lindsey's actions, Kristen just whispered to Stevie, "Later. Just be there for him right now. Just...follow his lead, okay?"
All Stevie could do was nod.
Kristen squeezed Stevie's shoulder for reassurance and walked out of the room.
"Finally she's gone and we can be together." Lindsey said leading her to sit on the bed.
"Linds, what is going on with you?" Stevie asked as she sat down.
"Nothing is going on with me Steph. I just wanted to see you. But, what's her name? Kristen? She said you weren't coming."
All Stevie could say was, "Well, I'm here now."
Lindsey smiled at her. "I'm so happy that you are."
He leaned in for a kiss and again she pulled away. "Why won't you let me kiss you? Come on Steph, why are being this way? I thought we were going to try to make this work again."
Stevie sighed still so confused on what was going on. She wished Kristen had told her exactly what was going on. Seeing that Lindsey eyes were fluttering, he was now exhausted from his outburst.
"Why don't we take things slow okay? Let's go to sleep and then we can try again."
Lindsey thought for a second then said. "Alright, I'm pretty tired actually."
"Okay then let's lay down."

Stevie was so uncomfortable laying in the bed that Lindsey shared with his wife.
He snuggled up close to her; he held her as he drifted off to sleep.

A few minutes later, Stevie untangled herself from Lindsey's grasp.
She smiled at him; he looked so peaceful. She covered him with a blanket and left to find Kristen.
She and Karen were in the kitchen having a cup of tea. They looked up and saw Stevie walking towards them.
Kristen poured a cup for Stevie and she sat down.
"Thank you." Stevie said. "Lindsey fell asleep."
Taking a sip of her tea, Stevie tried to collect herself. "Okay, Kristen, can you please tell me what is going on with Lindsey? I don't understand and I'm scared of what is happening to him. Why does he believe we are together? Why doesn't he remember you?"
Not meaning to ask all at once but couldn't stop as she asked question after question.
Karen took Stevie's hand and said. "Whoa Stevie, slow down."
Stevie stopped and looked to Kristen for answers.
"After coming home from tour I thought Lindsey would be back to normal but that didn't happen. How Mick described him over the phone and you as well, I was now seeing for myself. We finally went to see his doctor where he went through test after test. He wasn't doing drugs, his system was clean of that." Kristen took a moment and continued. "He was put through more tests and had scans done on his brain. He even saw a neurologist. After all that, the doctor finally made a diagnosis. He has.....Alzheimer's."
Kristen was sobbing by now.
Stevie stared wide eyed, letting her own tears fall. She couldn't believe what Kristen had just told her. She didn't know what to say.
"They had given him medication to slow the process but just last month, he started to go downhill pretty fast. Tonight was the longest and most horrifying episode he's had. When he goes through them he always asks for you. I just didn't call you before because like I said they didn't last long. I don't know what to do anymore! I don't know how to handle him. I'm so terrified when the day comes that he forgets who I am and the children completely."
Stevie stood up and hugged Kristen. Kristen leaned into Stevie and clung to her for dear life.
"Stevie, I know that what I'm about to ask you is asking a lot from you; but when he has these episodes, he wants only you. Can you come over just until he's calm again? All you have to do is be there for him. Please Stevie! Please."
Stevie bit her lip nervously then said. "Just call me and I'll be here."

Stevie stayed for a few more minutes then left back home; she was emotionally exhausted.
While Karen drove, Stevie's mind was reeling. How could this happen to her best friend, someone she loved deeply. Her heart ached to know that one day, and from the looks of it, one day soon, Lindsey would no longer be the Lindsey Buckingham that she knew and loved.
She also thought to herself as she stared out the window, "What did I just get myself into?"

I know this chapter was a roller coaster; sorry about that.
