Prologue
(Alex POV)
BANG
Holy shit they're here. Although I heard the warnings on the radio hours ago I was far too scared to leave the shelter of my house. My parents were already gone; Mark off into the military and my mom killed a month ago leaving me alone, to fend for myself, at a mere age of 16. Right now I should be worrying about who I'm going to go with prom with; not which meal will be my last. I became accustomed to the real world way too quickly for a girl my age.
BANG
I was told that the Americans would try to break into houses and take hostages for interrogation; thinking our government was stupid enough to tell locals their top secret plans. Really, are Canadians that underestimated? I didn't know anything except my family was gone and I was surviving off stolen instant-meals from abandoned convenience stores; much less the battle plans for the Canadian Navy.
BANG
I heard a thump as the door finally gave way and broke open. I cowered in my hiding spot and my eyes darted around in the dark as I heard footsteps above me. I hoped he wouldn't find me, I didn't want to die. I had a secret bunker in my basement; a little hidden room with food, water, a radio, a mattress and blankets, and other necessities. I was just silently praying to any god or deity that was listening that he wouldn't find me.
"I suggest you reveal yourself before I find you myself, if you know what's best for you!" surprisingly, the voice sounded really young; a few years older than me at most. Good. If he was young, he might be inexperienced and then he might not find me! Most houses in my area were evacuated already, so there's not a big chance that they would send one of their top fighters to raid some houses. I still had a chance and I had to hold onto it. At the very least I could hope that he had a soul and would spare me. It seems that these days, American soldiers were just heartless bastards on autopilot. Curling up into the blankets more, I made myself as small as possible. For about 5 minutes, he didn't come near the basement. I heard him go up and look through the bedrooms and first floor rooms, and then finally I heard heavy feet descending down the stairs. I pushed myself against the wall, as far away from the door as I could as I heard him rummaging around.
Just as I thought he was going to finally give up and leave, he walked closer to the wall that hid my little room. It seemed almost impossible, but I could hear the faint whisper of his hands running across the walls. I held in my breath, hoping relentlessly that his fingers wouldn't brush over the crease that marked the doorway to my room.
Luck seemed to be against me that day.
The door swiftly opened and light poured into my room, revealing the tall silhouette of a man. I looked up at him fearfully, gulping, as his gun locked on me. Then he lowered his arm, revealing a boyish face with a mop of black hair and chocolate brown eyes. He didn't look a day older than 18.
"Looks like I found you," he chuckled, revealing a deep voice. I gulped audibly. All thoughts of how hot he was aside, I was royally screwed.
