You're More than Just Your Gift

"Miguel! Miguel!" the village kids heard Luisa call out.

"They haven't found him yet?" Cecilia asked. Juancho and Alejandra shook their heads sadly.

-

"Miguel?"

"Miguel?!"

Dolores strained to hear her cousin, but without her gift, it was useless. She sadly looked at the ground and kept moving.

"Miguel?!"

-

Y/n pushed past the bushes to a river, where she heard soft crying and saw curly black hair bent over.

"Miguel?" she gently called, walking over. She slowly reached out to touch his shoulder, Miguel not flinching.

"Idiot!" she finally yelled, slapping him on the shoulder. "Do you enjoy making me worry?! Your family?! Do you jerk off to the idea of me crying my eyes out because you might be dead?!"

He stayed in his position, still whimpering.

"Migito..." She sat next to him, grabbing his head and placing it on his shoulder. "I didn't want to lose you. I was so scared I'd never see you again. Your smile, your laugh, your hug...I thought I had lost it all. And I...I love you..."

She listened to the sound of the river run and Miguel's cries. It was followed by the sounds of rustling from behind and a quiet, "Miguel..."

"I'm sorry..." he mumbled, still in Y/n's shoulder. "I didn't want to...hurt us...I just wanted...to be something I'm not..."

She walked over and sat next to him, glancing at Y/n. Taking the hint, she pushed her head on Miguel's, then got up and began walking back.

Alma continued to sit there for another moment before speaking up. "I've never been able to...come back here. This river...is where we were given our miracle..."

Miguel looked back up, first at his grandmother, then at the river. "Where Abuelo Pedro..."

"I thought we would have a different life...I thought I would be a different woman..."

Alma grabbed a candle and walked around the street, hopping up on a streetlight. Her eyes followed a yellow butterfly that flew by a handsome young man, who looked up and waved at her. She waved back, almost falling off. Catching it, she caught the man laughing and shrugged.

Dos origitas

-

Alma and Pedro spent their time together talking and falling in love.

Enamoradas

-

Their wedding was small and traditional, Alma in a dress and veil, Pedro in a matching suit.

Pasan su noches

The couple kissed, holding the same candle in their hands.

Y madrugadas
Llnas de hambre,
Siguen anando

-

Y navegando un mundo
Que cambia y sigue cambiando

Alma reached on the same table here wedding picture was on for a cutout of a baby and showed it to her husband, who looked back excitedly. But when she opened it to show three, his jaw dropped and he pretended to faint on the bed.

Navegando un mundo
Que cambia y sigue cambiando

Laughing, she fell on top of him, both of them snuggled.

-

The triplets born, their parents snuggled up to them, but stopped, looking worried out the window at invaders, watching the houses get ransacked.

Dos oruguitas
Paran el viento
Mientras se
Abrazan con sentimiento

-

Closing the doors to the old nursery, Alma and Pedro looked at each other, ready for their journey across Colombia with their wedding candle lighting the way.

Siguen creciendo,
No saben cuándo
Buscar algún rincón
El tiempo sigue cambiando

-

Looking behind them, the village saw the invaders running after them. Some screaming, others too scared to yell, they all ran off, deep down knowing how fast the horses could catch-up.

Inseparables son
El tiempo sigue cambiando

Pedro stopped running, realizing that it would do no good and that they were at their heels. He turned to his wife and bent over, kissing each of his babies.

Ay, oruguitas,
No se aguanten más
Hay que crecer aparte y volver,
Hacia adelante seguirás

Looking his wife in the eyes, he gave her a kiss, Alma not able to kiss back as the horrible realization of what he was about to do sinking in. Pulling away, hr ran towards the invaders.

Vienen milagros,
Vienen crisálidas
Hay quе partir y construir
Su propio futuro

Pedro walked over to the invaders, calmly, his hands out. But they showed no mercy on him and took him out.

Ay, oruguitas,
No se aguanten más
Hay que crecer aparte y volver
Hacia adelante seguirás

As Pedro was gone, Alma fell to get knees and wept, begging nobody in particular to bring back a husband and father to her family.

From the candle the two had brought, light came out of it, pushing the invaders back.

Vienen milagros,
Vienen crisálidas
Hay quе partir y construir
Su propio futuro

A house had sprouted from the ground, one of magic and wonder. Around her and the rest of the villagers, mountains sprang from the earth.

Oh oh, oh oh oh
Oh oh, oh oh oh
Oh oh, oh oh oh
Oh oh, oh oh oh
Oh oh, oh oh oh
Oh oh, oh oh oh
Oh oh, oh oh oh

-

Looking at her babies in her new home, Alma knew that this was another chance to have the family she wanted...just now without Pedro.

She put on a dark shawl and walked down the hallway.

"I was given a miracle. A second chance. And I was so afraid to lose it...that I lost sight of who the miracle was for..."

-

Years later, as she walked down the same hallway, she passed by her family. Bruno looked at her nervously, Isabela straightened up, and Luisa tightened her grip on the boulder she was carrying.

"You never hurt our family, Miguel. We are broken..."

-

"...because of me."

Ashamed, she stopped speaking. This new human side of Alma was one that he had only seen the night the candle had begun to go out.

Behind her, a butterfly flew past and to a reed in the water, Miguel's eyes following it. He realized that this was the same butterfly from Bruno's vision.

"Abuela," he said. Alma looked up and found him in front of her. "I can finally see." He reached out for her hands, which she gave him, her wedding ring from Pedro still there.

He led her into the water to the butterfly, which reached up to their waist, darkening their skirt and pants.

"You lost your home...lost everything...you suffered so much...all alone...so it would never happen again. We were saved because of you. We were given a miracle because of you. We are a family because of you. And nothing could ever be broken that we can't fix...together."

Through her tears, Alma smiled at Miguel, fifty years of grief being lifted off her shoulders as she looked at her miracle. "I asked my Pedro for help. Miguel..." She cupped his cheeks as tears ran down them, seeing him finally. "He sent me you."

She embraced her grandson as the sun illuminated the river.

Ay, mariposa
No se aguanten más
Hay que crecer aparte y volver
Hacia adelante seguirás

Thousands of butterflies swarmed around them, flying back to the Encanto. Miguel and Alma watched them go, their arms still around each other.

Vienen milagros,
Vienen crisálidas
Hay quе partir y construir
Su propio futuro

As they got back to the riverbank, a guy on a horse ran up to them awkwardly, yelling out, "He didn't do this! He didn't do this! I gave him the vision! It was me!"

Fixing himself, Bruno jumped off, rapidly talking to her the blame off Miguel and onto him, but Alma was too preoccupied with her son still being there. "I was like, 'Go!' And he was like 'Ftttt!' " Bruno took another few steps to his mother. "He only wanted to help! I don't care what you think of me, but if you're too stubborn to - to -"

He stopped, hand in the air for emphasis, as Alma pulled him into a tight hug and gave him a kiss, whispering, "Brunito..." [Burrito]

Eyes shifting around, he confusedly said, "I feel like I've missed something...important..."

Miguel walked past and got on the horse. "Come on." He helped Alma on, then she helped Bruno.

"Where are we going?" Bruno asked.

Eyes focused ahead, he declared, "Home." He snapped the reigns and the horse galloped off, Bruno nearly falling off.

-

The horse ran past the village kids, who watched excitedly.

"He's back, I found him!" Juancho cried.

"I found him!" Alejandra corrected.

Loudly tapping on Juancho's coffee cup, Cecilia cried, "He's back, he's back, he's back!"

-

Once Miguel reached the damaged house, Julieta came flying out. "Miguel?!" Once she reached him, she pulled him into a tight hug. "Miguel!"

"Mamá..."

"Ay, mi amor, I was so worried. We couldn't find you."

"Miguel!"

He tried to turn to the source of the noise, but was tackled to the ground in a hug, h/c hair in his mouth. "Ack -! What the..."

"Miguel..." the muffled voice mumbled through his shirt.

"Hey, N/n."

She sat up, Miguel leaning on his elbows. Suddenly, she wound back her fist and punched him in the shoulder.

"Ow! Why?! You already hit me!" He stood and reached out to help her to her feet. Once she was up, he pulled her into a hug. "By the way, I love you, too, mariposa."

"Huh?!" She used his shoulders to pull back, remembering what she had said earlier. "No, I didn't mean...you didn't think...oh, crap baskets..."

Agustín, covered in be stings, ruined their moment - although Y/n's hands were still on Miguel's shoulders - panting traumatically, "There were bees everywhere..." Miguel reached up in concern to touch his face. He smiled back, assuring, "I'll be okay."

"Uh, not if we don't have a house," Camilo dryly retorted, earning a hard nudge from Félix. "What? We don't have a house. I can't say we don't have a house? What's that? Not a house."

Miguel pulled away from his probably-girlfriend and walked up to where the arch used to be, hopping up, then looked at his family.

Miguel:
Look at this home
We need a new foundation
It may seem hopeless
But we'll get by just fine

The family followed him up.

Miguel:
Look at this family
A glowing constellation
So full of stars
And everybody wants to shine

But starts don't shine, they burn
And constellations shift

He bent down next to Antonio, taking his hand in his. Seeing Luisa struggle in moving some of the rubble around, he rushed over to help.

Miguel:
I think it's time you learned
You're more than just your gift

He put his hand on her shoulder as Luisa fought back tears, hearing the one thing she had needed to for so long.

Alma joined them on the pile of rubble. Julieta and Pepa rushed over to her.

Alma:
And I'm sorry I held on too tight

She took Julieta's hands and cupped Pepa's cheek.

Alma:
Just so afraid to lose you, too

She beckoned for another figure to step out. Bruno slowly came, Alma leading him, Julieta gasping and Pepa putting her hand on her chest.

Alma:
The miracle is not some magic that you've got
The miracle is you; not some gift, just you
The miracle is you

Pepa was the first to grab Bruno in a hug, lifting him up.

Miguel, Alma:
All of you, all of you

Camilo looked on with his mouth open, realizing this was the seven-foot scary monster.

Camilo:
Okay, so, we gonna talk about Bruno?

Antonio:
That's Bruno

"Yeah."

Bruno:
There's a lot to say about Bruno
I'll start, okay, Pepa!

He twirled her around as he apologized.

Bruno:
Sorry 'bout your weddin'
Didn't mean to be upsettin'
That wasn't a prophecy, I could just see you were sweatin'
And I wanted you to know that your bro loves you so

He pulled her and Félix into a hug, then threw them back to twirl around.

Bruno:
Let it in, let it out, let it rain, let it snow, let it gooo

Félix pulled Pepa closer.

Félix:
That's what I'm always sayin', bro!

He went back to addressing the whole family.

Bruno:
Got a lotta 'pologies I've got to say

"Hey." Julieta wrapped her arm around him.

Julieta:
We're just happy that you're here, okay?

"But -"

Pepa:
Come into the light

Agustín popped up from behind, hugging the three.

Agustín:
The triplets all reunite

Julieta, Pepa:
And no matter what, we're gonna find our way

Dolores elbowed Camilo roughly in the arm.

Dolores:
Yo, I knew he never left, I heard him everyday

Camilo shrugged at her, asking why that meant he was deserving of a beating. They listened out when they heard people singing and approaching.

Alma:
What's that sound?

Antonio looked out at the crowd of people making their way over with tools, led by M/n with Señora Guzmán and Mariano just behind her. "I think it's everyone in town."

Townspeople:
Lay down your load [Lay down your load]
We're only down the road [We're only down the road]
We have no gifts, but we are many
And we'll do anything for you

As Juancho pounded in nails, Miguel, Isabela, and Luisa lifted up a board.

Isabela:
It's a dream when we work as a team

She smiled at Luisa and placed her hand on her shoulder.

Isabela:
You're so strong

Luisa:
Yeah, but sometimes I cry

The other two hugged her around the waist.

Miguel, Isabela:
So do I!

Luisa:
I may not be as strong, but I'm getting wiser

Isabela:
Yeah, I need sunlight and fertilizer

They each planted a cactus, Isabela doing nothing to speed up the growth. "C'mon."

Isabela:
Let's plant something new and watch it fly

Isabela, Luisa:
Straight up to the sky

Miguel, Isabela, Luisa, Dolores:
Let's go!

Dolores jumped off the roof, the rope securing her fall.

Miguel, Y/n, Julieta, M/n:
The stars don't shine, they burn
The constellations glow
The seasons change in turn

-

Julieta watched Miguel take the spackle from Jorge and hand it to Y/n, who was on the ladder, Camilo giving her a thumbs-up from below.

Julieta:
Would you watch our little guy go?

Agustín:
He takes after you

He put his arm around her, the couple smiling at each other lovingly. [Okay, I get it, Pepa and Félix are couple goals, but these two are cute, too. Seriously, I saw someone legit hating on them because they weren't as openly lovey as the other two.]

-

Mariano let out a sigh, looking out from his seat in the entrance. Miguel and Y/n walked up from behind to check on him.

Miguel:
Hey, Mariano, why so blue?

Mariano:
I...just have so much love inside

He helped him up, smirking.

Y/n:
Y'know, he's got this cousin, too
Have you met Dolores?

Dolores popped up, smiling adoringly at him.

Dolores:
Okay, I'll take it from here, goodbye -

She went to shove Y/n out of the way, but Miguel stepped in front of her, getting pushed instead. Y/n calmly went to make sure he was okay, leaving Dolores to take Mariano's hands and begin her confession.

Dolores:
You talk so loud
You take care of your mother and you make her proud
You write your own poetry every night when you go to sleep
And I'm seizing the moment so would you wake up and notice me...?

Shocked, he gave her his answer. "Dolores...I see you."

"And I hear you."

"Yes!" Miguel, Isabela, and Y/n cheered from behind a wagon, high-fiveing.

Townspeople:
All of you, all of you

"Let's get married," Mariano said dreamily as they walked out.

Dolores pat his arm. "Slow down."

Miguel, Alma, Y/n, Townspeople:
All of you, all of you

-

The family looked at their new, imperfect house...all loving it as they did before.

Miguel:
Home sweet home
I like the new foundation

Alma:
It isn't perfect

Miguel:
Neither are we

"That's true," she chuckled.

Alma:
Just one more thing
Before the celebration

"What?"

Bruno:
We need a doorknob

Antonio held out a doorknob for Miguel, whispering with a smile, "We made this one for you."

He handed him the new doorknob with an M on it. It brought back painful memories, but when he looked up, he saw the whole family smiling encouragingly.

Antonio took his hand and smiled up at him, nodding. He looked at him a moment before feeling another hand slip into his. Looking, he saw Y/n, who was already looking at him with a soft smile. "Come on. Let's get you to your door."

They walked down, Miguel still a bit nervous.

Pepa, Félix, Camilo, Dolores:
We see how bright you burn...

He glanced at them, relaxing.

Isabela, Luisa:
We see how brave you've been...

With just a bit more confidence, he now fully looked up.

Julieta, Agustín, M/n:
Now see yourself in turn...

He reached the door, where Bruno stood in wait for him. "You're the real gift, kid. Let us in."

Alma:
Open your eyes

"Abre los ojos." Alma reached out, touching his face. "What do you see?"

He looked into the doorknob, choked up. "I see...me."

Miguel:
All of me...

He put the doorknob in, sending yellow magic sparkles around the house. Now on the front door stood the family, M/n included, with Miguel and Y/n in the front, appearing the same way they did in Bruno's vision.

One of the shutters waved. Recognizing it, Miguel waved back.

"Hola, Casita."

The doors opened and Casita pushed Miguel in. He reached out, grabbing Y/n's arm and pulling her with him. "C'mon, let's go!" he called out to everyone.

-

Antonio ran around the party on his jaguar while Isabela grew more plants with a battle cry, loving the bizarre creations she was now free to make.

Luisa continued helping during the party until Y/n saw her and pushed her with her finger on her forehead back into a hammock, the donkeys handing her a drink.

Snow fell from the ceiling, Pepa and Félix dancing under it. Y/n grabbed Miguel away from his family to join them. He twirled her around, dipping her. But because of his angel, his glasses began to slip. With one finger, Y/n pushed them back up, then reached up to kiss him.

"You were always my miracle, mariposa."

"And you were mine, Migito. Mi milagro ~"

They were forced apart by the house dragging them with the rest of the family, as well as M/n, to the wall, where a camera was set up for a picture with one of Bruno's rats operating it.

"Everyone, together!" Alma called.

"¡La Familia Madtiga -!"

They were cut off by the jaguar running by, the picture now perfectly imperfect.

And they all lived happily ever after...

The end.

" I can do all things through Him who strengthens me." - Philippians 4:13

-

Miguel:
There once was a mariposa
He's not much to look at
His family and friends all have colorful wings,
But his are black

So he locked himself away
And cried and cried
Tried to cut off his wings,
Never attempted to fly
Until one day, someone knocked at his door...

Wiped the tears off his face,
Smiled to him, and said,

Y/n:
"Oh, mariposa,
"Open your eyes
"The wider you spread your wings,
"The brighter you shine
"Oh, mi mariposa,
"Don't you cry
"You're beautiful in my eyes"

There once was a mariposa
Who doesn't know how to fly
Should she slap her wings or should she just glide?
Can someone tell her why?

She tried staying quiet because she knows
If she doesn't, she goes
She fell for him a million times
'Till that boy said something that changed her life

Miguel:
"You must find your own rhythm to fly
"Mariposa"

Y/n:
[Oh, mariposa]

Miguel:
"The wider you spread your wings"

Y/n:
[The wider we spread our wings]

Miguel:
"The higher we can fly"

Y/n:
[The higher we can fly]

Miguel:
"Don't you"

Miguel, Y/n:
"Cry"

Miguel:
"You're beau..."

Y/n:
"Beau..."

Miguel:
"...tiful in"

Miguel, Y/n:
"My eyes"
