Family Madrigal

Miguel reached for his shirt with bright patterns and a pink, blue, and purple butterfly, fresh from the sewing table, plucked a thread, and threw it over his head. He then jumped off the bed, the house putting his shoes in front of him just in time. From the shelf, it wiggled his round green glasses over to him, which he took and put on, taking in a confident breath. "Make your family proud."

He ran down the stairs, greeting a picture of his late grandfather, "Morning, Abuelo!"

As he began to set the table, three children ran up to the window, one chugging a cup of coffee, all excited.

"Hey! When's the magic gift happen?!" Juancho yelled at him, then went back to drinking.

"My cousin's ceremony is tonight," Miguel answered with a smile as he continued setting out plates for breakfast.

"What's his gift?!" Alejandra demanded to know.

"We're gonna find out!"

"What's your gift?!" Juancho yelled at him, getting more hyped by the sip.

Playfully teasing, Miguel put a hand on his hip and smirked. "Who's askin'?"

"Us!" they all answered together.

"Well, us, I can't just talk about myself. I'm only part of the amazing Madrigals." He gestured at the family tree hanging on the wall.

"Who are the amazing Madrigals?!"

"Ah, you're not gonna leave me alone, are you? Casita, help me out." The house proceeded to do wherever Miguel told it to.

Miguel:
Drawers!

They rattled open and closed.

Miguel:
Floors!

The tiles shifted around.

Miguel:
Doors!

Each door began to glow with magic.

Miguel:
Let's go!

This is our home, we've got every generation
So full of music, a rhythm of its own design

Miguel banged on each door he passed to wake his family up, all except for Dolores', which he only hip-bumped.

Miguel:
This is my family, a perfect constellation

He opened the door to Isabela's room, who sat up in her bed, her hair flowing.

Miguel:
So many stars and everybody gets to shine

He ran, balancing, next to his older sister, Luisa, on the floor that moved as a treadmill while she ran herself, holding onto weights as she pumped her arms. Miguel slid backwards, leaving Luisa to do her thing as Alma came out, everybody dancing to her like the cult they were.

Miguel, Chorus:
Whoa!

Miguel:
But let's be clear, Abuela runs this show

Chorus:
Oh, oh, oh, oh

Miguel, Chorus:
Whoa!

Miguel:
She brought us here so many years ago

Chorus:
Oh, oh, oh, oh

Miguel, Chorus:
Whoa!

Miguel:
And every year, our family blessings grow

Chorus:
Oh, oh, oh, oh

Everyone grabbed a cup of coffee, courtesy of Casita, before they were on their way.

Miguel:
There's just a lot you've simply got to know, so

Welcome to the Family Madrigal

The Madrigals flooded out the door in either side of Miguel.

Miguel:
The home of the Family Madrigal
[We're on our way!]
Where all the people are fantastical and magical
I'm part of the Family Madrigal

"Oh my gosh, it's them!"

"What are the gifts?!"

"I can't remember all the gifts!"

"But I don't know who is who!"

"Mm-hm, alright, alright, relax," Miguel chuckled as they kept yelling.

"It is physically impossible to relax!"

"Tell us everything! What are your powers?!"

"JUST TELL US WHAT EVERYONE CAN DO!"

Miguel slowly took the cup of coffee from Juancho, holding it between his fingers. "And that's why coffee's for grownups."

-

Miguel:
My Tía Pepa, her mood affects the weather
When she's unhappy, well, the temperature gets weird

Pepa ran around in a field, happy as she created a rainbow and beautiful sun, until she tripped. Angrily, she stormed away, thunder following her.

Miguel:
My Tío Bruno -

Chorus:
We don't talk about Bruno!

The kids stopped to look at everyone, confused.

Miguel:
They say he saw the future, one day, he disappeared

Miguel, Chorus:
Whoa!

Miguel:
And that's my mom, Julieta, here's her deal

Chorus:
Oh, oh, oh, oh

Miguel, Chorus:
Whoa!

Miguel:
The truth is, she can heal you with a meal

Chorus:
Oh, oh, oh, oh

Julieta fed the line of people, including a guy with a snapped arm. When he took a bite of her food, it snapped back into place, giving her a thumbs-up.

Miguel, Chorus:
Whoa!

Miguel:
Her recipes are remedies for real

Chorus:
Oh, oh, oh, oh

Miguel:
If you're impressed, just imagine how I feel

Grabbing her son, Julieta pulled him in and gave him a kiss on the cheek.

"Mom!" he cried, slightly embarrassed, before spinning her around.

Miguel:
Welcome to the Family Madrigal
The home of the Family Madrigal

"Hey, coming through!" He pushed past the crowd as he ran through the streets.

Miguel:
I know it sounds a bit fantastical and magical, but
I'm part of the Family Madrigal

Two men, one tall with glasses and the other short with frizzy hair, started working it behind him.

Miguel:
Two guys fell in love with the

Miguel, Agustín, Félix:
Family Madrigal

Miguel:
And now they're part of the

Agustín, Félix:

Miguel, Agustín, Félix:

Agustín, Félix:

Miguel, Agustín, Félix:

Miguel:
So, yeah, Tío Félix married Pepa and my dad married Julieta

Félix gave Pepa a passionate kiss, making her swoon while Agustín and Julieta shared a simple, sweet one.

Miguel:
That's how Abuela became an Abuela Madrigal

Miguel:
Let's go, let's go!

The kids on both sides of the family surrounded the spot, each looking perfect as always, then cleared room for their grandmother to walk by.

Alma:
We swear to always
Help those around us
And earn the miracle
That somehow found us

She helped pick up stones and carry them. [Gramma gonna break her back.]

Alma:
The town keeps growing
The world keeps turning
But work and dedication will keep the miracle burning
And each new generation must keep the miracle burning

-

"Wait, who's a sister and who's a cousin?"

"There's so many people!"

"How do you keep them all straight?"

"Okay, okay, okay, okay."

Miguel:
So many kids in our house, so let's turn the sound up
You know why? I think it's time for a grandkid roundup

Chorus:
[Grandkid roundup!]

Miguel:
Cousin Dolores can hear a pin drop

Dolores popped up, hand by her ear as she smiled at the children to confirm.

Miguel:
Camilo shapeshifts, Antonio gets his gift today

As Camilo babysat the children and made them laugh by shifting into their mother while she took a break, Alma dressed Antonio for the night, straightening his bowtie.

Miguel:
My older sisters:

Miguel, Chorus:
Isabela and Luisa!

Isabela kept walking as if he were not there, but Luisa finger-gunned her younger brother.

Miguel:
One strong, one graceful, perfect in every way

Alma gave her eldest granddaughter a kiss on the cheek, watching as she flourished herself away, then twirled in the middle of the square, flowers growing from under her.

On a balcony, a handsome young man watched her with a lovesick sigh, his mother smiling approvingly as she placed her hand on his shoulder.

Chorus:
Isabela...

Miguel:
Grows a flower, the town goes wild

Chorus:
Isabela...

Miguel:
She's the perfect golden child...

While his attention was too focused on Isabela, his other sister came by and picked up the bridge he was standing on.

Chorus:
Luisa! Luisa! Luisa! Luisa!

Miguel:
And Luisa's super strong
The beauty and the brawn do no wrong

"Family, let's get ready!" Alma called.

Upon hearing her, Luisa instantly dropped the bridge, running to her grandmother. "Coming, Abuela!"

-

Miguel:
That's life in the Family Madrigal

Chorus:
[Oh, oh, oh, oh]

Miguel:
Now you know the Family Madrigal

Chorus:
[Oh, oh, oh, oh]

Miguel:
Where all the people are fantastical and magical

Chorus:
[Oh, oh, oh, oh]

Miguel:
That's who we are in the Family Madrigal!

"Adíos." He waved them off, ready to leave, before bumping into Alejandra. "Oh!"

"But what's your gift?" she asked innocently.

He opened his mouth to answer, trying to think of what to say, when an accordion was thrown at him, the band ready to start up again. Awkwardly, he played it as he tried to leave.

Miguel:
Well, I gotta go, the life of a Madrigal

Chorus:
[Oh, oh, oh, oh]

Miguel:
But now you all know the Family Madrigal

Chorus:
[Oh, oh, oh, oh]

He tried to ditch the accordion and duck away from the children behind a building.

Miguel:
I never meant this to get autobiographical

Chorus:
[Oh, oh, oh, oh]

Miguel:
So just to review the Family Madrigal
Let's go!

Children:
But what about you, Miguel?!

Miguel:
It starts with Abuela and then Tía Pepa, she handles the weather

Pepa was still pouting, getting soaked in rain.

Children:
But what about you, Miguel?!

Miguel:
My mom, Julieta, can make you feel better with just one arepa

Children:
But what about you, Miguel?!

Miguel:
My dad, Agustín, well, he's accident-prone, but he means well

While he was chopping wood, a bunch of bees out of a nest flew out and attacked him.

Children:
But what about you, Miguel?!

Miguel:
Hey, you said you wanna know what everyone does, I got sisters and cousins and -

Children:
You, Miguel!

Miguel:
My primo Camilo won't stop until he makes you smile today

Children:
You, Miguel!

Miguel:
My cousin Dolores can hear this whole chorus from a mile away

Why she decided to walk out a mile, nobody knows, but she could, in fact, hear it and danced along.

Children:
You, Miguel!

As he tried to find a distraction, Marino passed by. Seizing the chance, Miguel grabbed onto him.

Miguel:
Look! It's Mister Mariano, hey, you can marry my sister if you wanna but between you and me she's kinda a prima-donna

He noticed Isabela pass in the background and remembered what happened last time he criticized her relationship with Mariano.

Miguel:
Yo, I've said too much and thank you but I really gotta go

He shoved Mariano away, trying to run off, but he kept being followed.

Children:
You, Miguel!

Miguel:
My family's amazing

Children:
You, Miguel!

Miguel:
And I'm in my family, so...

Children:
You, Miguel!

Miguel:
Well...

"Miguel!"

Everyone stopped and turned when they saw Alma giving them a weird look. "What are you doing?" [Wym what's he doing? YOU WERE IN THE SONG -]

Stuttering, he tried to answer, "Uh, they were just asking about the family, so -"

"HE WAS ABLE TO TELL US ABOUT HIS SUPER AWESOME GIIIIIFT!"

Alma looked confused for a moment until Dolores came out in the doorway. Thinking she was being helpful, she said, "Oh. Miguel didn't get one." Squeaking, she pattered away, Alma shrugging and going back to the preparations for Antonio's ceremony. [Aren't you supposed to be a mile away?]

They looked back at him sadly, Cecilia finally asking quietly, "You didn't get a gift...?"

"Who needs a gift when he's already funny, kind, and has the coolest glasses ever?" a voice suddenly came. Recognizing who it was, Miguel panicked, silently trashing the inside of his brain in panic as he saw Y/n walk over. "Hey, Miguel."

"Uh, h - hey..."

"Miguel?" Osvaldo the delivery man called, putting a package of decorations in his arms. "Delivery. I gave you the special since you're the only Madrigal kid without a gift. I call it 'The Not Special Special'. Since, uh...you have no gift."

Y/n raised an eyebrow as Miguel strained a smile, letting out between his teeth, "Thanks."

Osvaldo went to leave, but stopped one more time to tell him, "Oh, and tell Antonio good luck. Last gift ceremony was a bummer...last one being yours that did not work."

"Okay, that's it." Y/n picked him up and yeeted him into the distance while Cecilia looked up at him sadly.

"If I was you, I would be really sad..."

"Child, you will be yeeted next."

Miguel stepped in between Y/n and Cecilia, giving Y/n the look that told her to shut up, before sweetly turning back, forcing a smile. "Well, my little friend, I am not. Because the truth is, gift or no gift, I am just as special as the rest of my family."

At Casita, the family continued working on perpetrations for the ceremony. He heard his sisters call out:

"Who wants more pink?"

"Alright, guys, where do I drop the wagon?"

He sighed as Y/n shrugged back at him. "Hey, look at it this way. They're just helping, right? We can do the same. Meet you back at Casita?" she asked with a hopeful smile, Miguel heating up from THE HOT COLOMBIAN SUN YEAH THAT WAS IT.

"Uh, y - yeah, sure..."

Once she was gone, Cecilia whispered, "Maybe your gift is being oblivious."

"Huh?" He snapped himself out of his thoughts and turned back to Cecilia, not sure what she had said.

"I said maybe your gift is being in denial."

Over the house came the light's reflection in a beautiful, sparkly wave.

"I made a rainbow!" Pepa cheered.
