Prologue
One dark stormy night a bloodcurdling scream broke the silence. A young boy fell to the ground next to two bodies covered in shadow. A sob escaped him and he closed his small eyes. Three men clad in armor and wielding swords rushed into the big room. They saw the boy lying next to the bodies crying softly. The room was lit by one small candle next to a luxurious bed. The men rushed towards the boy.
"Sire who did this?" One asked as he helped the small boy up.
"Should we move the bodies?" Another knight asked. The men helped the boy away from the body as more knights ran in.
"What shall we do?" A young woman wearing the same bulky armor as the rest of the knights asked as she took in her surroundings.
"Move the bodies." A gruff voice said. Everyone turned to see the Emperor's advisor striding into the room. "Help his majesty to his rooms, you are the Emperor now." He said to the boy. The new Emperor hung his head. He had always wanted to be Emperor, but not like this.
"Should we inform the princess?" A tall guard asked the Emperor.
"Yes." He replied. The young knight, whose name was Maya was sent to tell the girl. She walked down the long halls of the palace. Navy blue rugs were laid on the floor. A picture of the recently deceased Emperor and his wife were staring down at her from a painting on the wall. Maya stopped at a large wooden door with intricate carvings of knights riding horses and war lacing the surface. She knocked and knelt in front of the door, her head bowed. The door creaked slowly open a crack.
"Your highness, princess Cavera" Maya said hesitantly as she looked into the startling blue eye of the girl behind the door.
"I was sent to inform you that your parents, The Emperor and Empress were killed tonight." Maya said quietly. A single tear fell from the blue eye and the door creaked open revealing a small, five year old girl with flowing black hair.
"You may go now." She said in a voice much too strong for a young girl who had just learned her parents had died. Maya left and the girl stepped back into the room. A moment later she walked back out holding a small, brown, sack. She stepped quietly down the halls and made her way out of the castle. When she was out she ran, never looking back. The last thing she heard from the castle was her brothers strong voice saying,
"Whoever did this, will die."
Chapter One
Basil
Basil lay sprawled out on the sand gazing at the distant Islands. It was a warm summer day just the type Basil loves, she was at the moment, lost deep in her thoughts as she was most of the time. She stares at the other Islands making up Cato Isles. Lying at her spot on Taivair, island that she lives on. She can just make out the bustling figures on the nearest Islands. The sun was setting and it bathed everything in a pinkish Orange light. A warm feeling filles Basil all the way down to her toes and swallows her up. Her eyes twinkle in the lingering light. She loves nights like this when everything around her looked warm and fuzzy.
Someday I'm going to be chief of one of those islands. She thought dreamily. Basil was the daughter of Chief Naborie, the chief of Taivair, and because of that she would inherit one of the islands. I hope I get Taivair. But she knew it all depended on the current head chief's decisions. She would love a green lushus island with monkeys hanging from the trees and coconuts everywhere. But she would hate one of the dead or dieing islands. She remembered the day it started clearly, it was six years ago when basil was five, in fact it was the day her and two other children from Cato came of age. every child in Adria had a coming-of-age day, whether they celebrated it or not it always happened the day when they turned five. The coming of age day men't they were no longer little children. On the day of coming-of-age it was a tradition to celebrate in Cato Isles. On Basil's Coming of Age day they had shipments of exotic fruits come from all across Adria. The whole day was a huge celebration and Basil remembered having so much fun. After all the celebrating was over she went to a different Island and stayed at her friends Hut and slept there. Before she went to bed she went outside to watch the sunset. Basil remembered how beautiful it was, five-year-old basil stared at the Fading Sun until it was no more. Then she stood up and skipped back to the hut. On her way back she saw a black rope like thing slithering across the sand. basil didn't know it then because she had never seen a snake but it was a Black Burrower snake. The Burrower snakes had hitched a ride on the ships coming from all different parts of the land carrying fruit and flowers and other festival items. From then on the burrower snakes had taken over the islands that the festival was on. There were about eight of them. The snakes had eaten the unexpecting animals and drove the tribes out because of their poisonous bites. The snakes were able to destroy so thoroughly because there were no predators on any of the islands. They are a unique type of snake because of their range of size, all the different colors they were born with, and most of all, they burrow underground and destroy everything in their way to make their homes. That is how the trees started dying. The snakes made so many burrows that they destroyed most of the roots.
"Hey, You know it looks kinda weird when you scowl at the sky." A loud voice says from behind Basil. Marlia, the head chief's daughter, is staring down at Basils head.
"We got to go to the festival! Where's the canoe?" Marlia says.
"I don't know!" Basil retorts.
"Well then, get it!" Marlia commands as if she is the Chief already.
"You have to help! I think we left it beside my house." Basils glares at Marlia. She's so bossy! Basil thinks. The girls run to a hut made out of tree wood and bark. They lift up a canoe made from a carved trunk of a tree and carry it back to the shore. They hop in and paddle following the flow of canoes to one of the larger islands. They finally make it to the Head chiefs island, Taraque. Everyone is singing and dancing. Basil joins the festivities and watches as the frail high chief walks up on top of a slab of rough stone.
"Everyone!" He says in a weak voice. "Calm down, please. I have come to make an announcement. Sholom, son of chief Kayatan, Is now an elder!" Claps break out in the crowd as Sholom, A boy who is eighteen steps up to join High Chief Wanakuo.
"He will be joining the chiefs to watch over one island." Basil looks into Sholom's eyes. He looks worried and Basil knows why. The dead islands have no chiefs at this time and there is a good chance he will get one.
"His new Island is-" A loud bang behind High Chief Wanakuo, causes him to pause. Flame races down the village. Before anyone understands what's happening, a fleet of swift black canoes land on the shore behind the party. Inside the canoes men and women wearing steel armor are rushing out in an orderly fashion. Each is holding two swords.
"We are from Hisung, by order of the Emperor himself, you will all be killed, or taken prisoner."A man says as he unsheathes his swords. A clang of metal against metal sounds and the soldiers advance. The people of Cato are trapped. Behind them a fire is raging through their village and in front of them, soldiers who are ready to kill are advancing. Basil's mother runs to her as chaos breaks out.
"Take the canoe. On the other side of the island." She says, fear in her eyes. Basil doesn't move.
"Go!" Her mother says as she is pulled away by an enemy soldier. Basil gasps as she sees a soldier leaving High Chief Wanakuo's body lying in the sand. She turns around and sees two small children hiding behind a tree.
"Come with me!" She says as she lifts the smaller one, a girl with deep scared brown eyes, from the little boy's arms. The boy scrambles up and races behind Basil as they run around the shore. They leave the battle behind and stop at a large canoe. Basil lifts the boy into The boat and jumps in with the small girl. She hands the boy, who looks like he's six, the little girl. Basil takes the paddles and starts paddling and doesn't stop until they're out of sight from any of Cato Isles.
