Chapter One

Genell

Oh Great. This is just perfect. I'm stuck here in the middle of a heap of kids who are probably thinking, Who is this weird tall girl? Never seen her before. And that's because I am weird, very tall and probably only a third of the people in this school have actually seen me before. I wish I could just hide, but I can't. Almost every turn I make theirs more teachers,."Good job dad. You did it." I instantly blushed. Why did I say that out loud? I know he can't hear me.

We were passing a big window on our way to the autotoruim to hear this "Big announcement" the Mayor (aka my dad) insisted that the whole school had to hear. There's no way I can escape the auditorium while it's packed with kids. I'll probably be spotted by a teacher while running through a bunch of kindergarteners because I'm so tall. We were just about to pass the window when I started crawling towards it to get outside, breathe some fresh air and run back to my house so I don't have to sit at a desk all day. Almost there, I thought as I began to stand up to see Amnel looking around trying to find me. I rolled my eyes and started to unlock the window. I didn't have a key so I used my long finger nail to turn it. Long nails come in handy in situations like these. The window squeaked loudly as I opened it. Amnel turned to look at me.

Dang it! I almost got away with jumping out the window, but Anmel caught me by the wrist, pulling on the sleeve of my hoodie. He gave me a smug face that said "You knew I would win."

"When the mayor assigned me to look after you he knew I would do a good job of it." He gave me an apologetic look as if he was sorry for me. I tried to shake of his hand, but that only made him hold on tighter. I rolled my eyes again, and closed my eyes, relaxed my hand and it slipped out like jelly. "Hey!" Amnel yelled. "Come back here!" His finger stood perfectly still as he pointed at the dead center of my face. Almost every kid passing looked up at me. My cheeks grew scarlett. "I just want to be alone. Is that too much to ask?" I whispered almost silently. I flipped up my hood and bolted towards the window.

...

I stood in front of the window on the side of my house on the first floor, but I needed to get to the third floor window to my bedroom. I pushed aside some vines and greenery until I found the rope I always left hanging out my window except in the winter. The only reason I knew how to climb a rope, is in the 5th grade my dad signed me up for a fitness class and the aggressive coach made me climb ropes 2 hours a week.

Halfway up the rope I looked up through the blooming trees at the snow capped mountain. Villages dotted the surface. On the other side there was another one covered with houses. One of the only markets was down here in the middle of the two. Since my dad is the mayor, the middle was a convenient place to live. Looking on my right through a wall of cherry trees you could catch a glimpse of town hall. If you were to cross the large circle of concrete called the 'trading center' you would come across a large building, which is my school. A lot of the kids from the south mountain come to this school, but the west mountain kids have their own school.

When I reached my room, I jumped in and grabbed my book I was reading off of my bed. It was about people who had magic. It was in my dad's office and I found it when he called me to come to his office to meet Amnel. I thought back to that day.

My math class was just wrapping up. Math was the only class I could sit

through except Reading. Math for some reason calms me down and is fun for

me. Most kids hate math, but I love it.

Anyway, Someone from the school staff came down to my classroom to

come and pick me up. I thought I was going to the principal's office, but alas, I

was going to my dad's office. There I found my dad and a kid about an inch

taller than me with flowy chestnut brown hair, a blue hoodie and dress pants. I

had seen him around and almost every girl my age adores him, even though he's

fifteen. When he saw me his eyes lit up, and he couldn't stop staring at me.

"Genell, Meet Amnel. Amnel, meet Genell."

"Hi," I said enthusiastically even though I didn't mean to.

"Hi," He said with an ice cold tone to his voice, and he winked at me. I

flipped my hair and sat down next to him. Mr. Shallow got straight to the point.

"Amenl will be looking after you Genell. I've had enough of you running from

school, He will also tutor you since your grades are low. He will start today."

I was speechless. Since when did he care about my school? He knows I

hate it, and if anything my grades are getting higher! And Amnel? Did he have

to pick the most obnoxious guy in the world?

"Ugh!" I sputtered.

"Hey, it won't be that bad," Amnel said, and put his hand on my shoulder.

It felt as cold as his words. It shrugged it off and ran and tried to run out of his

office. But Amnel swooped his legs under mine to trip me up, and pulled me back

to my chair. My dad smiled, took my hand and escorted me out the door. Before

I left, I looked back to Mr. Sallow's desk. Under some files was a thick book with

its spine pointing towards me. It said; The Magicians. I need a good read, I

thought. So I grabbed the book, stacked the files neatly so it looked like nothing

was touched, and chased after Amnel.

After I was done reading, I looked through my trunk at the foot of my bed and rummaged all the way to the bottom, until I found a small velvet bag filled with pressed flowers. My mom had taught me how to make them when I was five, right before she disappeared. I wish I still had her. I hope she's alive. If she is alive,

"Where is she?"

Lana. I thought as I stepped out of my room to meet with Mr. Tevin from the town board. I stepped into my office and sat down. A young maid ran in after me.

"He's here. Shall I let him in?" She asked.

"Yes." I answered. I recognised the girl as Melea. She talks in a funny way. I thought. An older man walked into the room and sat down in front of me.

"Mayor Sallow." He said in greeting.

"Mr.Tevin." I said back.

"First order of business, The announcement went well other than your daughter running away from school, again." He said in a gruff voice.

"And?" I prompted.

"We have a few changes we'd like to propose for the town we would like the taxes to-'' I drowned out his voice and thought about Lana. She was my wife. No, she is my wife. She was taken by magicians. It was years ago and I haven't seen her since. I have a plan to find her though.

"Doy you agree?" Mr.Tevin asked.

"Sorry, what?" I wondered.

"Would you like me to write down the proposals so you can look over them today?" Mr. Tevin sighed.

"Yes. That will do. Come back tomorrow afternoon and I will tell you my answer."

I followed Mr. Tevin out and showed him to the door. I started going back to my room when another man stopped me.

"Sir," He said, "We have the magician in custody."

"Who is it? How old are they?"

"She won't tell us her name and she looks about fourteen." The man answered.

"Does she have strong magic?" I asked.

"We think so. She already unlocked the non-magic door twice."

"Show me." We walked down the hall and took the elevator up to the fifth floor. He showed me to the room next to the kitchen. He opened it using a glowing silver key. We stepped inside. There was a sofa pushed against the far wall, a chair, and a table holding an empty plater and a pitcher.

"Where is she?" I questioned.

"I- I don't know!" Tevin stutterd. I stepped inside the room and studied everything carefully. Suddenly I saw a flicker of movement near the door.

"Shut the door!" I yelled. The man slammed the door and suddenly I could see a girl standing in front of him.

"I thought you said this room was magic proof!" I accused the man.

"It is! It doesn't work properly if the door is open too long." He defended. "She's not invisible anymore is she?"

"Well, then," I huffed, "That needs to be fixed!"

I looked the girl over. She looked to be 15. She had long, sleek black hair pouring down to her shoulders. Her pale face was sprinkled with freckles, and her bright green eyes stared back at me defyingly.

"Why am I here?" She growled in low voice

"Because I want you here." I answered.

"You won't get away with this! She said. "You have no idea who you are going against!"

"Oh, I do." I smirked, "I know you have magic, and I can use that against you. You will fess up." I said. I cautiously opened the door and stepped out. The man followed and shut the door behind us. He locked it and I walked downstairs. I found Genell in the library and walked up to her.

" I heard what happened at school." I said.

"Yeah, So?" Genell said as she looked up from her book ", I didn't want to hear your boring announcement anyway."

"Nevermind, I have to go to the market to meet with someone I'll be gone for about half an hour you need to -" I started

"Stay home and study." Genell finished in a bored voice, "I know, I know."

"Yes, Please Genell, be good." I walked out of the room and walked to the market.

Chapter Five

Vella

I nearly jumped out of my skin when I heard the knock. I wobbled and fell off the pile of stuff including a table, a couch and a few pillows that lead to an air vent in the ceiling. I landed on my back and the air was pushed out of my lungs. I tried to groan but I couldn't. Finally I got up and started taking the pile apart hastily. I huffed loudly when I pushed the love seat off the small table.

"Hello? Is someone in there?" A girl's voice called from the other side of the door. I didn't answer.

"Anyone?" The muffled voice asked again. I grabbed my empty tin plate and held it up like a weapon knowing it wouldn't help me.

"Who are you?" I replied hoarsely, my voice cracking and giving away my fear.

"I knew someone was in there! Why are you here?" The voice cried excitedly.

"I said who are you?" I slowly repeated.

"Oh, I'm Genell!" Answered the girl. "But you can call me Gen."

"Why are you here?" I questioned not giving the girl enough time to ask me anything.

"Umm... I live here?" She said quizzically, "What's your name?"

The thought of telling her flashed through my mind but grudgingly I pushed it away.

Clunk Clank Clunk Clank

It sounded like footsteps coming down the hall. "I got to go, I'll be back tomorrow!" I heard Genell's footsteps disappear down the hall. Everything was quiet again. I hummed my mom's lullaby she sang to me when I was little, she called it, My Little Raindrop, and made it just for me. I stopped and debated making the stack again and looking at the vent but decided not, I had looked at it enough already to know it wasn't a possible way out. I sighed, silently scolding myself for being afraid when the girl, Genell, knocked. I tried convincing myself I didn't want her to come back but part of me longed for a friend.

"No," I thought aloud, "Not after last time."

I remembered the day I vowed never to have friends again.

It was a sunny monday morning and I rushed out of my house early so I could catch up with my best friend Enil. I ran down the dirt road and saw him waiting at the edge of the road for me. He was a whole foot taller than me and he had tan skin, blue eyes, and messy brown hair. He smiled and said, "You're three minutes early, what's the rush?" I blushed and I don't even know why. We walked down the dirt road in silence, finally Enil broke the silence.

"Seriously though Vella why so early? Usually you're late, " He asked.

"Enil?" I asked solemnly.

"Yeah?"

"I have to tell you," I started, "This world isn't well, it isn't what you think it is... some people have um. They have magic. Well I have magic, I don't know how to explain."

"Show me." He said sarcastically.

His words stung and I realised he thought it was a joke but I obliged. I held my hand out towards a small dandelion, closed my eyes and imagined it hovering in the air. The flower plucked itself and floated towards my hand. When it got to my hand It shriveled and died. I looked over hoping to see wonder or Enil's warm smile on his face but all I saw was fear in his eyes. The warm sun cast shadows on his face. He stumbled and backed away.

"You're, You're a monster." He whispered. He ran down the road away from me.

"No I-" I called after him but it was too late. I sunk to my knees and cried.

I wiped a tear off my face brushing the memory away with it. It won't happen again, I thought, I won't trust her. I needed to get home, I was falling apart. Why had that evil man brought me here? My stomach grumbled and I gazed over at my empty plate. I glanced at the glass pitcher and grabbed it off the floor. I drank the last mouthful. Suddenly I found myself throwing the small pitcher across the room. The air filled with the sound of shattered glass and I saw the pitcher in pieces on the floor. I stood up and gathered the voluble pieces and hid them under the loose floorboard I had found earlier. The rest of it I left in front of the door hoping for a nasty surprise for the next person to open the door. I looked at my hand and realised I had kept one of the larger pieces of the pitcher. I stared at my reflection. My disheveled black hair, my tired green eyes. Mom would never let me look like this. I layed down on the small loveseat and curled up with the small blanket I had been given. Before I knew what was happening, I was asleep.

I didnt even try to read this one so good luck, if it's really dumb or says mine or my friends names IGNOR IT AND FORGET u Ever read It
