John walked over to me and sat down.
"Hey, what was that about? I couldn't hear what he was saying. But he just got up and stormed off. Is everything okay?"
He put his arm around my shoulders but I nudged him off.
"Is Jimmy always that moody?"
"When it's about a girl- yes. Usually. He falls in love very easily. Well, not 'in love' per say. He usually just wants to get into your pants."
I looked at him in disgust and then replied,"is that true? Or are you just trying to get me on your side?"
"Oh it's very true," he answered,"Let me tell you now: that boy is sex-crazy. But let's be honest- which boys aren't?"
"So you are, too?"
"Well, not exactly 'crazy'. But I think about it from time to time, y'know? You don't do that?"
"Not usually..."
"Well, then, you're awfully pure. Don't you want a little fun in life? Breaking the rules is pretty fun."
"I don't know. I guess it's just my dad-"
"Your reason is because of your dad? What about you? What do you want?"
"Can we talk about something else, please? This is making me uncomfortable."
"Okay, but just remember. It's always up to you. It's your life."
I gave a fake little smile and then hugged him. I looked at the clock on the far wall. It was already 10 o'clock. I had to get home before my parents started worrying about me.
"Do you need a ride home?" John asked.
"That would be nice, considering you're the one who drove me here. How else would I get home?"
He chuckled as he picked up his bass and struggled to pick up his amp.
"Here, let me help you with that," I suggested, walking over to take the amp out of his hand.
"It's heavy. Are you sure you can handle it?"
"Of course I can."
I plucked it from his hands and let out a strong huff. It really was heavy. But I wanted to prove him wrong.
"Are you sure you've got it?" He asked.
I couldn't say anything because I was slightly out of breath, so I just nodded. He turned away and laughed.
"Have it your way, then."
We approached his car and he popped the trunk open and placed his bass inside. I walked over and tried to hoist the amp up to the rear bumper. But I couldn't.
"Okay, I think I need some help now," I finally admitted.
He smiled and took the amp from my hands and placed it inside, with no effort whatsoever.
"Don't worry," he said,"you're not used to carrying those heavy, irregularly shaped amps."
I just laughed it off and we both got into the car. He started the engine and was starting to back up when Robert came sprinting full speed toward he car. I opened the window to let him talk.
"You're leaving? I thought we were all driving with Bonzo to the bar!" He said, gasping for air.
"I'm sorry, Rob," John started,"But I've got to take Lou home. I promised. Plus, you guys are just going to get drunk and meet chicks."
"But you promised to come with us first!" Robert said firmly, finally caught up to his breath.
"I'm really sorry. But I've got a girl now. I don't need to be at bars to find someone."
Robert didn't answer but just waved us on and walked away.
"You know, you could go if you want to." I said.
"But I've got to take you home." John answered."
I sat there in silence. I didn't want to ruin his night. I knew he liked hanging out with his band mates. On one hand, John would be happy which would also make me happy. But on the other, I would get in trouble for coming home later than expected.
I let out a deep breath and finally answered,"what if I go with you?"
"What?" He asked with a very surprised look on his face.
"I'll just tell my dad that the concert went longer than expected. Since you were playing and were also my ride, I wouldn't be able to get home."
John smirked and replied,"I like the way you think. See? Breaking the rules is always fun."
----
We pulled up to the local bar. As we walked inside, Robert immediately came to greet us.
"So, you decided to come after all? Oh, and you've brought a friend!" Robert yelled over the loud music, slurring his words. He was obviously a little tipsy. But it was a kind of funny. I couldn't help but laugh.
"What's she laughing at?" He asked, confused.
John just laughed and shook his head,"see, Lou? This was why I was hesitant about you offer. But anyway, could I interest you in a drink?"
"Um, sure," I answered softly.
"What do you want?"
I stood there completely silent. Truth was, I had never had a drink before. I just never wanted to try, especially after seeing my father drunk all the time and watching his long road to recovery. I never wanted to have a drink after living through those terrible years.
"Um," I started again,"can I just have some, uh, water?" I asked quietly.
"Did you just say water?" John laughed through his words.
"Um," I answered, not knowing what to say.
"Lou, this is a bar. It's where you get hard drinks. Have you ever even had a drink before?"
I shook my head.
"Then why did you want to come?" He blurted out.
I just shrugged.
He rolled his eyes at me and them said," I'll pick it out for you."
My heart started to beat faster and faster. I didn't want to tell him why I didn't drink. I was too scared for some reason.
He handed me and glass and smiled.
"Drink up!" He said, lifting his glass to his lips and taking a sip.
I panicked and quickly raised the glass to my mouth and chugged down my drink.
John's eyes widened in horror.
"You're not supposed to do that!" He screamed.
I closed my eyes tight, trying to recover from drinking. It was really strong. But for some reason, I liked it.
I handed him the glass. "Hit me again."
He hesitantly took my glass and shouted," hey, another round over here."
I took it again and did the same thing.
"Lou, what did I just say?" John screamed, putting his hands on my shoulders, shaking me.
I was starting to get double vision. And then all of a sudden, I just blacked out, smacking onto the floor with a loud boom.
----
I started to open my eyes. John was hovering over me. He was saying something, but I couldn't hear him. I only saw his lips moving.
My eyes looked side to side to see a crowd of people huddled around me in a circle.
I slowly said up and there was a roar of cheers. But John quickly turned around to quiet everyone down.
"Someone get her some ice," John called out. Then he moved in closer to me and whispered gently,"are you okay?"
I slowly nodded, still in a bit of a daze.
Someone came over and handed John a rag filled with ice. He placed it on my forehead and I winced a little at the pain.
"That was quite a fall you had there. I told you to go easy on those drinks." He said.
"I don't know what happened. I guess I was just nervous." I answered.
I looked around and people were still gathered around us.
"Do you think they could, you know, leave?" I asked.
John nodded and stood up,"there's nothing to see here. You can go now."
Everyone backed away slowly until someone shouted out,"not until you kiss her!"
Of course, they wanted to see some romance. They huddled back together and waited for us to kiss.
"John, they're making me uncomfortable." I whispered.
"Just do it, then they'll leave."
"But they're invading our privacy."
He moved some hair behind my ear and cupped my face in his hand. He moved closer to my face. Then he winked at me. He obviously had a plan.
People started chanting "kiss, kiss, kiss, kiss" over and over and over.
All of a sudden John shouted out,"wait! This isn't my wife!"
Everyone stopped and looked at each other. Then they all just walked away because they knew there was no kiss coming.
"Good thinking," I said, laughing.
John smiled helped me to my feet.
"Can you walk by yourself?" He asked.
"Of course," I answered. I started to walk but with every step I wobbled and tripped.
"Here," he said, scooping me up into his arms,"let's get you home."
He put me into his car and buckled me in. I was still not very aware of my surroundings and I eventually blacked out again.
