Ch.6:Him

I sat on the bed, staring at my lap as White-Hair stood a few feet away from me.

It was silent, save for the light tapping of my shoe.

"What did you mean before? When you said you were previously human?"

He sighed before running a hand through his hair, and straightened out his shirt. "I said that I'd tell you my name once we were in private so..."

He closed his eyes, taking a deep breath then opening them.

"My name is Ken Kaneki, i'm 19 years old, and I'm a one eyed ghoul."

My eyes grew wide. Why did that name sound so familiar?

"My name is Ken Kaneki, nice to meet you miss L/N!"

I froze.

What the hell was that?

Had I met this guy before?

"About a year ago I went on a date with a woman named Rize Kamishiro. She was a ghoul and attacked me. My organs were damaged in the attack. She was crushed by steal beams and the doctors had to transplant her organs into my body so I could live, thus turning me into a ghoul"

I hesitated in asking about his hair, seeing as Touka said it wasn't something he liked to talk about.

"How did...how did your family react to you becoming a ghoul?"

He narrowed his eyes as he looked away.

"I have no family. None that are related to me atleast. My father died when I was an infant, and my mom died when I was only 10. I lived with my aunt until I moved out for college, but she treated me like trash. The only family I have now is the people under this very roof, they're the only ones I've ever considered family"

My lips parted "what was your mom like? I bet you loved her"

Kaneki smiled softly "I did. Very much. She was a kind woman and always put others before herself. She'd always tell me 'it's better th feel pain yourself, than to inflict it on others', but that's what made her weak, and for a considerable amount of my life, I lived by that phrase, but after...-I realised that living by that quote would only get me and the people I care about killed".

"What made you change your mind about it?" I asked.

He sighed "I'd rather not talk about it".

"Why...why are you telling me all of this?"

Kaneki looked me in the eyes "because I want to earn your trust. I know I haven't really been the best person since I've brought you here, but know that I will do whatever I can to make you trust me".

He seems so different from earlier. He looks... vulnerable in a way. It must've not been easy to say all that stuff.

I took a look at his hands, finally noticing the black that coated his finger nails "so, black huh? That's pretty edgy".

Kaneki looked at his hand before placing both of them behind his back "it's...not nail polish".

We sat in a very awkward silence.

"So um, you brought me here to help you guys, right?"

Kaneki nodded "something like that"

"And amongst other things..." He mumbled but it didn't reach my ears.

"So, how am I supposed to help you guys if I'm constantly stuck in this room?" Kaneki pursed his lips "you won't be. Even though you're human, I need everyone here to trust you. Which means that you'll be fighting along side us when we go up against Aogiri" my eyes widened "fight?! But I'm human!".

"CCG officers did it everyday and they were human".

"Yeah, but they've had training! I barley know how to fire a gun!"

"Which is why I'll be training you how to fight" his voice was flat.

I hesitated. "How do I know I can trust you?"

He sent me a small smirk "well, seeing as I'm not eating you right now, i'd say that you need to trust me"

'Where the hell did that come from?! He was just being all nice, and now he's being gross!!'.

Kaneki chuckled "oh, the look on your face is so cute. I'll be by here tomorrow. I'll have Touka bring you some food" I nodded.

He leaned in front of my face, his nose inches from mine. "Enjoy your night, I'll see you in the morning". His breath was warm and had the strangest scent of coffee.

He pressed a feather like peck to my nose before leaving.

I sat on the bed, stunned. My cheeks turned a light shade of pink before I slapped them 'get yourself together, numb nuts!!'.

Tomorrow was gonna be difficult...

Suki held a shovel in her hand, now patting down the dirt on her father's grave.

Her tears had dried out awhile ago. She had no more to give.

Taking a shaky breath, she plunged the shovel into the ground before walking away, the tree her dad was now buried under casting a shadow.

She walked back into the bunker, seeing her mom huddled into a ball on the floor, her head resting on her knees.

"Mom" Suki placed a gentle hand on her mother's shoulder, but she flinched.

"Is it done?".

Suki nodded "you can go visit if you want" her mom shook her head "it'd be too hard." She sniffled.

Suki sat beside her mom on the floor, wrapping her arms around her shins "we need to start looking. If she's still alive, then maybe we can find her".

M/N clenched her fists "it's too late. Whoever took her has probably killed her by now" her voice was dull and monotone.

"What?! How can you say that?! What if she is alive, are you just going to leave her to die without doing anything?!"

"I miss her too, but even if there is a sliver of hope that she's out there, we'd never be able to defend ourselves against those monsters. I'm being realistic here, Suki!"

Suki growled "no, you're being a coward. If you won't look for her, then I will! I'll do whatever it takes to get my sister back!! You and her are the only family I have left, I can't lose her, too!".

Suki stood up, grabbing her backpack and weapon. "I'm going out to look. If you want to help, then come. If you don't, then fine. Stay here." With that, she walked out the door.

'I don't even know where to start...' Suki thought as she walked 'for all I know, the ghouls that took her are far away from here.'

As she kept walking, it began to get darker.

'Don't worry, Y/N. I will find you'.

'And whoever took you away from me is gonna pay'.
