I didn't realize how tough my new year was going to be after today. Last night I slept like a baby, not caring about today, How could I possibly know? that tonight, I would be tossing and turning in my sleep all night in fear and anger.

I twirled some strands of my brown hair around my fingers while I stare outside my window at the sky, probably zoning out till I realized I might be late for class and running down with my stuff.

My name is Isla, Isla Ellis, I hate my name because it reminds me of my grandma who used to abuse my mother. I just turned 22, depressing enough and I am almost finished with my course in writing so I can start being a professional ghostwriter.

It is an out-of-line job but my previous teacher recommended me for a course since I was good at writing reports for him. I went from wanting to study computers to Editorial work.

I had no idea how I came to this, but I am okay as long as I get a good job. Which my professor promised since I take on many projects outside my campus.

"Hey" I gave my mother a cheeky smile as she greeted me before grabbing the plate and getting myself some fruit and bread.

"So what's the schedule for your course?" she asked

"Nothing special just classes, but I'll have my weekends free, I might even have holidays for myself so... Yeah" she nodded smiling.

It was the end of august my new classes started. All I had to do was cross this and I would be able to take a job and leave working at small places.

I want to travel but that dream remains a dream for now. It needs money. We aren't poor but I could never get the courage to ask my mother for anymore. She already chipped in for current classes. My father was a workaholic. But he was also a bit sick at times. We never really connected but he was a good father.

"Bye mum"

I got my bag and walked out the door. The sky was already dark.

Gosh, it isn't even rainy season yet. The loud chatter in the class brought me out of my thoughts. Crowds were nerve-wracking to me. I hated them. I always found them a bit frightening.

I stare at the people talking as my eyes feel heavy. The lectures passed by pretty fast so it was time to go bra was too tired to even get up. I finally gave the site and stand up taking my bag and leaving out the class.

I was already late for my part-time job.
The clouds colored black the streets getting darker although it was before dusk it felt like the night was coming soon.

My part-time job was working as a helper at a flower shop. I wasn't paid much but I didn't really need much money. My father always gave me enough.

Although the shop was pretty popular among the areas around. I still had to take small alleyways to get there faster. One of those days where I held my bag to my chest and had my phone in my hand.

I was just about to step to my right when a man stood up making me jump. His fluorescent jacket immediately caused me to relax my shoulder. He smiled apologetically.

"The bars of the sewage system is open on this road. Be careful or take another way please" I nodded staring at the open holes.

"Thanks," I thanked slowly walking over the dirty water on that street and crossing towards the other side.

"Late. " Spoke my employer

I rolled my eyes.

"I am sorry," I mumbled taking my hoodie off and getting to work. Cleaning the dirty stems of the new flowers and putting them on display.

"Thanks," I said grabbing the money and giving our customer her change.

"You can leave now"

I smiled taking my apron off and grabbing my bag. It was night already, texts from my mom asking me to bring some bread while coming home and I thought I might as well get some snacks. I was too distracted, I took the same route back when I was supposed to go the other way around.

I leave a sigh thinking my shoes would probably be covered in dirty water but it was too late to the other way around. The sudden voices from the alley caught me off guard as I touch my back pocket and sigh in relief, only walking faster.

"Hey, where you going?"

I gasp at the sudden body in front of me, Leaning back away from the creep I stepped back next to a thin alley between two buildings. There were three other guys standing, talking in hushed voices as the guy continued advancing at me.

I gulp turning around but one of the guys just stared at me walking near me. I wasn't scared. Too bad for them I had a taser in my back pocket.

"Um-excuse me" I muttered softly, scared to death.

He pushed me back by my shoulder making me annoyed.

I just took all my strength and pushed him grabbing my taser and pressing it to his chest. He cursed before falling down, a random box falling from his hands. I almost tripped over it as the two other guys now stared at me and started walking towards me.

I ran, kicking that random box in the same open sewage with no bar making them curse out loud, and suddenly I was chased by two men.

"Shit shit shit" I whispered running into a random building in a corner and up the stairs.

My heart was beating out of my chest. Their voices cursing out loud could be heard from the second floor where I stood near a window. They walked towards the alley where we came from, The voices fading.

I was breathing heavily, I didn't realize my hands were sweating profusely and I held that taser near. It was like walking in a lion's den knowing he would be inside as I walked back home.

I never realized how dangerous this place could be although It was well lit everywhere.

The minute I saw people around me my shoulder relaxed. I still had to walk home. I wondered if calling the police would help me. But those guys were already gone.

I bite my tongue while walking straight home that night. Giving an excuse for forgetting the bread as I ran up the stairs after taking my shoes off and fell on my bed.

I wasn't surprised this would happen. I had my fair share of problems when I was a teenager.

I stare at the clock which hit nine and fall back down on the bed, I had been in bed for an hour. I wanted food, but I was too tired to even move.

"Oye, have some dinner," Mom said opening the door before knocking twice.

"hmm-coming" I mutter staring at nothing.

The constant talk of numbers gave me a few drowsy eyes, but my classes were finally over. I had promised myself to never walk through that alleyway again. And risk my life. Instead, I should just take a long way. I did regret it, as I see those same guys standing there. I had no time in my hand as one of them looked at me.

I gasp as he froze for a second and the sudden realization hit him.

"That's her! She kicked the damn package in the sewer! You bitch!"

Package? What package!?

I noped the fuck out and ran for my life to the opposite end of the road. The more I ran the more they yelled for me to stop and the further I got from my workplace. I was dumb, I shouldn't climb up the stairs of a building and bang on a random door for help. But they were so fast.

I gasp at the sharp pain in my head as my hair was pulled back. I tried to grab my taser but I couldn't reach my back pocket as my hand was grabbed.

"Hey hey hey! Why are you running huh? You fucken damaged my goods. Stop yelling!" he pushed his hand on my mouth as I screamed.

I had no idea what they were talking about, I just couldn't stand there and do anything, but he kicked the back of my knee bringing me down. A screech left my mouth in a harsh tone as my throat started hurting. His hand wrapped around my neck squeezing it.

"Help!" I yelled pushing him but in vain as a slap landed on my cheek. Tears leaked down my cheeks as I cried when his hand around my neck was suddenly snatched by another one.

The sound of a gunshot left like it would break my eardrum.

I crawl back as I see a guy, in jeans, a hoodie a white grocery bag in his hand, and, a gun.

What?

It didn't take the other guys long to realize none of them was hurt, it was a warning shot. He tilted his head to the side and nudged them to leave without a word as they stare at him and suddenly backed off running in another direction.

I thought I was dead for sure, not with those guys no. But this guy. I gulp pressing my back at the wall and putting my hand on my neck, my skin was burning.

He looked back and tried to get further but then I heard his voice.

"You good? You need me to call the cops?"

I let out a sigh of relief as he mentioned the cop. He took his phone out typed something and pressed it to his ears getting a little away from me.

"Uh-hey-" He dragged like he speaking to someone he knew.

He spoke for a minute before hanging up but I was busy getting my bag near me and taking my taser in my hand. He looked back at me and noticed my hand, the random chuckle from his mouth annoyed me.

"It-its okay, I don't have a reason to hurt you. Do you wanna call the cops? My friends and right around the corner" I stood up looked at him and shook my head. He nodded once very slowly waiting for an answer from me.

"Uh-I'll go" I whispered and he nodded as I took a step forward but my knees buckle and I fall again earning a voice from him.

This is how it feels to be extremely unfortunate.
