An Adventure

I dug a hole in the crumbly ground outside your house. I'm sorry. I couldn't help it. A great dread came over me that you would send me back, but your eyes were grinning, and you began to dig as well.

 A contest!

We dug and dug, piles of earth, you with your hands and me with mine. Little mountains appeared around us. We were gods, shaping the earth.

The Talls found us in our soil caverns. Their faces were tight at first, but they brought something that clicked, and wouldn't let you or I move, and then metal things that dug farther and faster than I. They joined our contest.

I felt a bit cheated at their advantage, but in our patch of ground, with you and the Talls, and the light on the clouds, I found I wasn't alone.

Your sigh was a pleasant one, like a breath of wind through our earth mountains.
