Chapter 4
She leans against the white vanity and pats the ottoman in front of it. The vanity is covered in all types of makeup. Ones that I could only imagine buying before.
"You're human, like me. I can tell that because of your eyes. Vampires have that cold condescending blue eye color." she says with a soft smile.
"So everyone with blue eyes is a vampire?" I ask thinking back to everyone back home.
"No." She giggles lightly. "You can tell the difference because of their glow." She smiles. "Now, I'm sure you're wondering about all the folklore, and I'll explain the best I can," she pauses. "They need blood to survive, but all the legends about them being burned in the sun, and hating garlic and mirrors is all made up." She continues, waiting for me to take it all in.
"What's the food source?" I ask wondering if I want to know the answer.
"Some prefer animal blood meanwhile some prefer humans, but don't worry there's a perfectly safe system put in order for that." She says reassuringly, "Now, the reason you were brought here. I'm sure that's what's on your mind." She says and I nod. "You're a princess, part of the main bloodline that rules the vampire world. It's a political monarchy like for humans." She says slowly. "Since the king- your father- died the queen has... gotten a terrible illness, She won't have long." Her eyes look at me apologetically. She pauses before she continues. "As a result, we need a new ruler and you have a birthright. And in hindsight it's much better than an army ruling the vampire world, we've seen it fail multiple times throughout human history." She says trailing off.
"I'm sorry but you've got the wrong person. I'm not this Eleonora Martinov person," I say quietly.
"Oh but my dear you are!" she exclaims.
"How do you know?" I ask her condescendingly.
"Vampires can sense it. They know their royalty." She says calmly. "Besides, surely you know you're adopted. You must've wondered where you were from. Well, this is it!" She says raising her arms in the air.
"Yes, I know I'm adopted." I sigh. My mind goes immediately back to my parents and Max. "Oh my god!" I sigh. "My parents! They must be worried sick! They've probably called the police already. They will come looking for me." I warn.
"Oh, sweet princess." Yven sighs. " Your parents knew the agreement. They won't come looking. This is your home now. You need to step up and rule this kingdom... Otherwise terrible things will start happening." She trails off.
"I'm not a vampire though," I say, wondering how a human is supposed to rule vampires. She quickly looks down and back at me.
"That's the tricky part. There's... this thing you have to do before you can become queen. It's not exactly ideal but... well, of course, you have a right to know." She begins rambling. I must've begun looking worried because she quickly reassures me. "Nothing terrible, it's just that you must wed before you can become queen." She says looking down at the floor.
"That's not horrible." I sigh with relief. "Wait you mean get married?" I ask shocked. She nods her head looking down. "But I'm only 21," I say my eyes getting wide.
"I got married at 19, at least you got to live your life outside and gain some experience." She says trying to be helpful but it sounds jealous. My eyes travel down to her hand where a blue sapphire sits on her ring finger.
"Do I at least get to choose who I marry?" I ask my mind wandering back to Max.
"Kind of, it's a tradition they have in this castle. The queen mother chooses 3 eligible bachelors and the princess gets to choose the final one. It's a whole process with elimination parties. If the princess refuses, the queen mother chooses for her." Yven looks at me as if I've just been killed and resurrected. "It's a very out of date practice, and they must be a vampire already, so they can turn you." She says as if this is a completely normal thing.
"That is the worst thing I've heard!" I exclaim loudly. "How come you haven't turned yet? Aren't you already married." I ask looking at her confused. She looks at the floor in shame.
"My husband Count Henry, he wants an heir to his land."
"Oh, vampires can't have kids," I say coming to the realization.
"Of course not, they're dead." She giggles, I feel so bad for her. She seems so kind yet here she is clearly very unhappy.
"So are you expecting?" I ask intrigued, maybe she and I can be friends, and I could really use a friend right now.
"Oh god no." She says tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. "You have a long day tomorrow, get rest now." She says as she waits for the large golden door to open. I look out the window to see the sun setting, it was morning just a second ago, maybe the prepping and the showers were a lot longer than I thought. "Oh one last thing, humans can't open the golden doors. You need a vampire. I'm sorry," She says and leaves. That night I cannot go to sleep with the thoughts running through my head, I miss my parents. I feel anger towards them for keeping such collosol secrets from me. I miss Max dearly and wonder if he's even alive.
