Some Things Never Change
"Honey?"
Y/n jumped back from the railing of the balcony, having been startled by the man behind her, who gave an amused look. "Did I frighten you?"
"What? No, of course not." She went to back away from the window, noticing her hands stuck by what she perceived quickly as ice. "Ugh, again?"
"Hold still." Elsworth waved a hand and it was gone, giving his girlfriend a chance to flex her hands. "Better?"
"Much. Seriously, how do you deal with this all the time?"
His hands found their way to her shoulders to pull her closer, giving her a kiss on the head. "You'll get used to it. Just be glad you don't freeze everything you touch. Now come on, they're ready, my queen."
"Yes, my glorious king," she replied, giving him a a playful tap on the arm, then took it, letting him lead her out of the room.
Ah ah ah ah...
He looked behind him, startled. "Do you hear that?"
She looked back out from the balcony at the clear day and huge lake. "No...why?"
He went from looking out to back to his girlfriend. "Nevermind, love," he replied with a shrug and pulled her off to leave.
A leaf passed over them and around the castle, towards the autumn forest and to Anna, her hair up in a bun and a pretty autumn dress on, neutral in color. She shivered slightly from the cool breeze, giggling at the red leaf as it flew by.
She stepped over a fence to Olaf, who was attempting to tan on a picnic blanket, and giggled. "Enjoying your new permafrost, Olaf?" she asked, sitting down and untucking her dress from under her.
"I'm just living the dream, Anna," he sighed.
"Mmmm..."
One of the leaves fell in between Olaf's stick fingers. He sat up, studying it closely. "And yet change mocks us with her beauty."
"What was that?" she asked, a little confused.
"Forgive me, maturity is making me poetic." He blew a quick raspberry, then smiled at her innocently. "Tell me, you're older and thus all-knowing. Do you ever worry about the notion that..." He looked away, his smile dropping into a one of panic. "...nothing is permanent?"
"Uh...no." Despite this, there were evident aging marks under her eyes when they squinted.
"Really? Wow, I can't wait 'till I'm ancient like you, so I don't have to worry about important things."
She leaned back with him, her hands behind her head. "That's not what I mean. I don't worry because I have...you. And Elsworth and Kristoff and Sven and Y/n will be my sister-in-law one day and the gates are open wide and...I'm not alone anymore."
Anna:
Yes, the wind blows a little bit colder And we're all getting older
And the clouds are moving on with every autumn breeze
She reached up towards the wisps of clouds in the sky, then sat up, watching a pumpkin rot away.
Anna:
Peter Pumpkin just became fertilizer
Olaf held up the leaf, which flopped in his hand.
Olaf:
And my leaf's a little sadder and wiser
Anna:
That's why I rely on certain certainties
-
Anna:
Yes, some things never change
Like the feel of your hand in mine
A house got raised up behind where they were standing while she took his hand.
-
Anna:
Some things stay the same
A man cut down a red autumn tree while a guy was painting it. Angry, the ran over and began to scold him harshly, Anna and Olaf running away before things got ugly.
Anna, Olaf:
Like how we get along just fine
-
Anna:
Like an old stone wall
That'll never fall
Some things are always true...
She skipped along the wall next to Olaf, a rock breaking at the end and throwing him into a mining cart and went down the tracks, Anna running to retrieve him.
She ran ahead and grabbed the lever and pulled the direction of the tracks.
Anna:
Some things never change...
It crashed into the stopper, Olaf flying out and into Anna's arms, who hugged him tightly.
Anna:
Like how I'm holdin' on tight to you
The leaf flew from them to town, where Kristoff and Sven were carting through. Kristoff looked at it go, his hand out towards it.
Kristoff:
The leaves are already fallin'
Sven, it feels like the future is callin'
He put him in a headlock before he could eat a bushel of carrots, dropping down to do his voice.
"Sven":
Are ya tellin' me tonight you're gonna get down on one knee?
He got when in front of Sven and pulled out a ring, Arendellians watching him. A mother covered her child's eyes while everyone else tried to think of how to tell the princess that her boyfriend had gone crazy.
-
He sat on a curb next to Sven, his head in both hands.
Kristoff:
Yeah, but I'm really bad at plannin' these things out
Like candlelight and pulling of rings out
He fumbled the ring out, nearly dropping it on the cobblestone. Sven shot his head out and caught it between his teeth.
"Sven":
Maybe you should leave all the romantic stuff to me
He dropped the ring in his hand, which he put back in his breast pocket as Sven dragged him away and pushed him over to Oaken for a manicure. While the large man worked, Sven rubbed his shoulders, sharing professional looks with Oaken.
Kristoff:
Yeah, some things never change
Like the love that I feel for her
After they finished, Sven took him to go look at suits.
Kristoff:
Some things stay the same
He looked at his reflection in the window in a blue suit with neck ruffles, buttons, and a darker coat while Sven admired himself in a sleeveless, sparkly purple dress with a tie on the neckline.
Kristoff:
Like how reindeers are easier
Sven took off the price tag for the suit and put the money down, the cashier smiling at Kristoff in knowing who he was planning to marry.
Kristoff:
But if I commit
And I go for it
I'll know what to say and do...
"Right?" he asked Sven as they walked out of the store.
"Sven":
Some things never change
Kristoff:
Sven, the pressure is all on you
He gazed at Anna with Y/n, hearing her laugh that filled his heart until he thought he might squeal from the cuteness.
Seeing him, she ran, Kristoff's arms held out and Y/n on the princess' heels. At the last minute, she ducked so that Y/n went crashing into his arms. Startled, she pulled back quickly, giving him a light punch on the shoulder while Anna laughed and Olaf jumped into Kristoff's arms next.
-
Elsworth stepped onto his balcony, looking out at the square where he could look out at Arendelle.
Elsworth:
The winds are restless
Is that why I'm hearing this call?
Is something coming?
I'm not sure I want things to change at all
These days are precious
Can't let them slip away
His gaze narrowed in on his family, standing right in the center of his view.
Elsworth:
I can't freeze this moment...
But I can still go out and seize this day!
-
Citizens helped to hold up a banner with Anna's help. But she accidentally grabbed someone's laundry rack and a pair of underwear that startled her into nearly dropping it.
-
Fishermen grabbed their fish from the net and tossed it to one another, ending up with Olaf, who took it and threw it back into the river, waving goodbye to it.
-
Seeing Elsworth in the crowd, Anna gave a huge smile and ran to him. He looked at her, offering a smaller one in return and holding out his hands. She grabbed them tight in her own and squeezed them.
Behind her, Y/n walked over and put a hand on Elsworth's shoulder. He took it and gave it a kiss. Their background were men carrying a huge log with Olaf trying to help, his feet dangling in the air.
Citizens:
The wind blows a little bit colder
Olaf:
And you all look a little bit older
He jumped down and ran off with the kids while Anna set out a tablecloth, feeling the other end get grabbed to help her.
Anna:
It's time to count our blessings
Anna, Y/n:
Beneath an autumn sky
They leaned in closer to each other, each smiling, but had to back off when Oaken dropped a large pumpkin on the table. Others set out their own food.
Citizens:
We'll always live in the kingdom of plenty
That stands for the good of the many
Elsworth:
And I promise you the flag of Arendelle will always fly
His hand shot off to set off iceworks above their flag.
Anna grabbed his hand, pulling him closer to her, and Y/n clung onto his other arm.
Anna:
Our flag will always fly!
Y/n:
Our flag will always fly!
Citizens:
[Our flag will always fly!]
-
Citizens:
Some things never change
Take a look and the time has flown
Olaf took one of the pots and took the carrot out. He removed the one from his face and shoved the new one in, setting that Sven had eaten the old one.
-
Citizens:
Some things stay the same
'Though our future remains unknown
Elsworth gave a little boy a snow statue that he ran off with with a huge smile. A little girl whispered in his ear and, with great effort, he was able to make her an ice rocking horse.
-
Citizens:
May our good luck last
May our past be past
Time's moving fast, it's true...
Some things never change
Anna hopped on one foot, taking her heels off. Balancing them in one hand, she used the other to reach out to Y/n and pull her into a hug.
Y/n:
And I'm holdin' on tight to you
She slid past her, swinging their arms. Anna's fell back and Elsworth took it, his turn to grab Anna in for a squeeze.
Elsworth:
Holdin' on tight to you
Sven walked inside with Olaf on his back, who reached out for the princess. She took his hand and held it as he passed.
Olaf:
Holding on tight to you
Kristoff took Anna by the hand and spun her around before sneaking past.
Kristoff:
Holding on tight you you...
She clasped her heels to her chest, smiling wistfully in at them while their backs were turned.
Anna:
I'm holdin' on tight to you...
-
Anna, with her hair back in pigtails and a green nightgown on, made weird grunting sounds, throwing up claw-like hands, while everyone but Sven sat on the couch, Sven to the side with a bell in his mouth.
"Um...okay...um...lion!" Kristoff shouted.
"Grizzly bear!" Olaf guessed.
"Monster!"
"Mama bear!"
"Angry face?"
"Papa bear!"
"Uh..."
Y/n looked up innocently with a small smirk and dough-eyes, asking, "Hans?"
Anna stopped and pointed, grunting again, this time to tell her that she was getting warmer.
"Unredeemable monster!" Elsworth called, raising his hand.
Kristoff hid his jealousy with a wide smile, wanting to really drive the point home. "Worst mistake of your life!"
"He didn't even kiss you!" Olaf cried.
Sven rang the bell, letting Anna relax her shoulders and throw up her hands. "Villain!"
"Ohhhh..."
"We all kinda got it."
"Okay, Olaf. Your turn."
He got up and waddles to the front of the room, where Sven gave him a card. "Okay. So much easier now that I can read..." he mumbled, then crumpled the paper. "Okay. Lightning round: boys against girls."
"Okay." Kristoff sucked in a breath, his hands on his bouncing knees. "I'm ready. Elsworth?"
He nodded curtly, his hands on his lap. "Yes."
"Okay. We're ready. Go."
He began to rearrange himself into different shapes for Elsworth and Kristoff to guess.
"Unicorn."
"Ice cream."
"Castle."
"Oaken!"
"Teapot!"
"Mouse!"
He put out his arms, shimmying towards them with a fresh smirk.
"Ooh, Y/n!" Elsworth snickered while Kristoff let out a loud laugh, his arms out on the back of the couch while Anna gave him a nasty look.
"I don't think Olaf should rearrange."
Y/n shrugged and got up to take a piece of paper from Sven's awaiting basket.
"Doesn't matter! This is gonna be a synch!" She cracked her knuckles and leaned back. "Two sisters, one mind."
"Thank you." She nodded to the reindeer as he backed away and looked at the card.
"Okay. Here we go. You got this, Y/n...anytime now...just do it with your body."
Unsure of what to do, she held out her hand and spread it around.
"Nothing."
She tried to balance on one foot with her hands out.
"Tree. People. Treeople! Oh, that's not a word..."
Y/n held her hands out with a sudden idea, making a grand gesture.
"Shovel boy! Teeth? Doing the dishes!"
"Polar bear!" Olaf yelled out, an annoyed Anna glaring at him.
"Hey."
"Sorry."
But she snapped her fingers and pointed, Anna raising an eyebrow. "Bear?"
She shook her head violently, aggressively gesturing again. Anna looked over and saw her brother, looking a little scared, backing away. "Elsworth? Brother? Boyfriend. King. Hottie?"
She smacked her palm against her forehead while the king hid in the pillow he was holding, pale face now beet red.
Ah ah ah ah, ah ah ah...!
He suddenly looked up, color regained, and got up, slowly walking over to the window.
"Um, alarmed? Distracted? Worried?"
He fidgeted with his fingers, Anna's voice drowning out behind him as his face dropped into one of disturbance.
"Panicking? Disturbed? Oh, come on, he definitely looks disturbed!"
Rolling her eyes, Y/n aimed for the wall and shot out a blast of ice. Circling her arms, she gestured her head at Anna.
"ICE!"
The bell rang just as Y/n nodded. She looked over at Sven, then shrugged. "Well, one isn't bad."
Kristoff, his arm still around Anna, insisted, "If Olaf can't rearrange, how is that fair?"
She rolled her eyes and used his knee to push off, running to the two. "Rematch?"
Elsworth finally snapped out of it enough to strain his face to look normal. "Oh, you know what? I think I'll turn in." He glanced at the frozen wall and, with a wave of his hand, made it vanish.
"Are you okay?" Anna asked, trying to get closer, but he pulled away.
"Just...just tired," he answered without turning around or stopping. "Goodnight."
Olaf got up with a yawn and stretched. "Yeah, I'm tired too. And Sven promised to read me a bedtime story. Didn't you Sven?"
Behind him, Kristoff tried not to sound too surprised when he answered, "Did I?"
"Oh you do the best voices!" He got on Sven's back and let him carry him out of the room, his voice fading. "Like when you pretend to be Kristoff and you're like, 'I'll just go talk to some rocks about my childhood and stuff...' "
Kristoff, however, was too busy staring at Anna pace to get offended, eyes trailing around with her. Everything is to him was blocked out in favor of what was already standing in front of him. "Um, how about you guys start without me."
Y/n absently pulled Anna into a hug and glided off. "I'm going to check on Elsworth. Goodnight, guys."
Anna only gave her a nod, not noticing Kristoff's mouth drop when he saw that they were alone together and that he had the perfect chance. While she was still turned, he set another log on the fire to cause it to roar, spinning around to chew on one of the mint leaves. He breathed on his hand and smelled it. He grimaced, but shrugged it off before making his way back to his original spot as of he had never moved before she could turn around, ring in hand.
"Did Elsworth seem weird to you?" Anna asked without turning around.
"He...seemed like Elsworth?" He got down on one knee and cleared his throat, but Anna either did not hear it or did not register, because she took a few steps to the window.
"He just seemed...off, you know? Like getting up in the middle of the game?"
"I don't know, I..." He cleared his throat again, his voice higher than usual. "I don't know, but -"
"I'm his sister!" Her hands flung out, smacking the ring right out of Kristoff's hands. "He can't keep shutting me out like this!"
The ring tumbled down and rolled under the couch. Kristoff reached out, clapping a large hand over it before it could get stuck too far down.
"I'm checking on him first thing tomorrow. Thanks, honey." Once he was kneeling again, she just turned to give him a kiss and stood, not noticing the ring. "Love you."
"I love you, too..." He looked at the empty room and gave a sigh. "It's fine."
-
Knock knock knock knock knock
"Come in."
Y/n cracked the door open. Seeing Elsworth, she took a larger step, shutting the door. "Okay, buddy. Something's wrong."
Concerned, he directed his full attention to the door and asked, "With you?"
"No. Look at you." In front of him, she grabbed the scarf that was wrapped around his shoulders, insisting, "You only wear Her Majesty's scarf when something's wrong."
"You've...noticed?" he asked smally, his eyes dropping down.
"Well...yeah? You wore it a lot in here when you were despresso and again whenever we fight." She took the scarf and rearranged it on him like a fretting mother. "Even when the fights are silly, you still worry." She gave the scarf one final smooth and put her hands on his shoulders, forcing his forehead against hers. "Now. What's wrong? Is it about the game?"
He pulled away, insisting, "No, that's not it."
"Elsworth?"
He sat on their bed, looking at her hesitantly. "There's this..." He began and bit his lip. Sighing, he pulled back. "I just don't wanna mess things up and...I'm worried about you."
She sat next to him, the mattress sinking further down. "Me?"
"You saw what having magic did to me...I just don't want the same thing to happen to you."
"Elsworth, it won't." She placed her hand on top of his on reassurance. "I don't want you worrying about me. Or you. You're a great king, you know that?"
His eyes closed, opening on her with a small smile. "What would I do without you?"
"You'll always have me." She squeezed his hand. Letting go, she flopped back on the bed and pat her lap. "Come. I know what you need. Cuddle close. Scooch in. Her Majesty sung this often to Anna and I."
He fell on her instantly, curling up with his head on her chest. One hand stroked his hair and the other began to rub the bridge of his nose to the tip as she began to sing. "Where the north wind meets the sea...there's a river..."
He joined in, his eyes closed. "Full of memory..."
"I know what you're doing," he said, voice still on-key.
Y/n chuckled, but continued with him, holding him close.
"Sleep, my darling, safe and sound...for in this river, all is found..." She finished the last part, Elsworth having drifted off into a sleep. She kissed the top of his head and leaned back on the headboard, closing her eyes and waiting for sleep to come herself. The hand that had stopped stroking his nose went around his shoulder, rubbing it gently until it stopped with the thick blanket of sleep.
