Never Forgotten
A/N: Someone suggested Saboace and I couldn't let a good opportunity to let it go to waste. Also. I'm sorry.
Ace hopped off his boat and onto a small island. He stood on the dock and held his hat keeping it on his head. The town was small, mostly friendly to pirates. Ace walked into the town whistling softy. One hand stuffed in his pocket while the other held his bag. As he was waking down the path to the town many of the people greeted him. He would respond with a tilt of his hat before continuing on. Ace went into a tavern and took a seat then dropped his bag.
"Good day sir, what can I get for you?" He asked.
"One of everything." Ace said.
The man furrowed, "On the menu?"
"Is that a problem?"
"N-No sir."
Then the man disappeared behind the double swinging doors. Ace rummaged in his pocket pulling out a bounty poster. He unfolded it to find Luffy's smiling face. He flattened it against the bar smoothing it out before smiling. Once the bartender came back Ace flashed the bounty to him.
"Has this pirate come here?" Ace asked.
The man hummed furrowing at the poster before looking up to Ace and shrugged.
"Not that I know of, who is he?" He asked.
Ace gave a small gasp, "You don't know who this is?!"
He drew attention to himself by slamming his hands on the table. The man backed up slowly.
"This is Monkey D. Luffy! The man who will be the new pirate king." Ace said.
He earned the attention from the man sitting in the back. He was gnawing on a bone of some animal.
"Pirate king? Yeah right."
Ace leaned against the counter, holding up his fist. In an instant his fist caught fire having the man gulp and back up against the liquor cabinet.
"What was that?" Ace asked.
"Oh I think your food is done."
Then the man dashed to the kitchen as Ace sat back shaking the flame off. He pushed back his hat to his back. He hummed folding the bounty and put it back in his pocket. He felt eyes on him, Ace glanced over his shoulder to the only man inside of the tavern. Then turned back to the bar, where he was served about seven to eight dishes. Within seconds. It was gone, and Ace's face was planted into a half eaten dish. The man snorted a laugh before he left. Earning Ace to snap awake. He grumbled wiping off his face before finishing the meal and paid. Ace then left to find some hotel or an inn or something. He yawned heading back to his ship when he heard a tapping of feet. He turned when something fluttered past him. Then Ace watched the top hat get stuck in a tree. A blonde stepped up to the tree and groaned. He wore a black trench coat, wavy blonde hair, a lead pipe on his back, black boots and some blue jeans.
"You need some help buddy?" Ace asked.
The blonde turned to him, "No I've got it."
Ace crossed his arms as the blonde took the pipe off his back and reach up to the hat. But he was still too short. Ace chuckled approaching the man, then jumped up into the tree and climbed up into it. The blonde watched as the branches russle before he watched Ace's head poke out from the greenery. He grinned looking down to the blonde and knocked his hat down from the tree. He smiled catching his hat and looked up to Ace.
"Thanks!" He called.
Ace jumped out of the tree and landed before the man.
"Sure anytime."
The blonde chuckled having Ace frown to him. His gloved hand reached over pulling twigs and leaves from Ace's hair. The blonde brushed off his hands before holding his hand out to Ace.
"My name is Sabo. I've heard allot about you Ace." he said.
"Sabo?" Ace furrowed, "Your not Sabo."
"What?! What do you mean I'm not Sabo?"
"Sabo's dead."
"I'm not dead I'm standing right before you."
"Whatever you say Fake Sabo."
Sabo pursed his lips, "I'm Sabo."
"So Fake Sabo, what brings you here?"
"I'm looking for someone."
"Oh? I am too."
"Who?"
"Blackbeard."
Ace glared at the town, his dark eyes glancing around not seeing no hide nor hair or the fat man. He growled turning back to Sabo.
"Blackbeard? What for?"
"He killed a member of my division for a devil fruit. I'm gonna kill him."
"Well at least were not looking for the same person. Cause that would be a problem."
Ace chuckled, "So fake Sabo you wanna go get a drink?"
"Sure."
It took him a minute.
"I'M SABO!"
But the following morning Ace groaned sitting up. He rubbed his head as he glanced around the hotel room. He yawned and stretched and shifted slowly when he furrowed. He lifted the blanket seeing he was naked. That's when he noticed the naked butt under the sheets. He snapped over the so called 'Fake' Sabo sleeping soundly in the bed. Ace pursed his lips lowing the blanket. He debated if he should get up and leave or wake up Sabo. So. He tried to wake up Sabo.
"Hey. Sabo." Ace nudged him.
The blonde grunted tossing over to Ace. Sabo nuzzled closer to Ace wrapping his arms around his torso.
"Five more minutes." Sabo grumbled.
Ace chuckled, "Maybe you are Sabo."
"I told you that."
"Hey get up, your drooling on me."
"Good."
Ace tried to push Sabo away but failed to the blondes tight grip onto him. So. He gave up letting Sabo sleep on his chest. Ace lied on his back stroking Sabo's hair then ran his thumb over his matted scar on his face.
"Sabo, how did you get this scar?" Ace asked.
Sabo kept his eyes shut, his jaw was slacked, and he was completely relaxed.
He shrugged, "I don't remember."
Ace furrowed, "Do you remember anything from your past?"
"No."
That's why Sabo didn't remember Ace. Sabo fluttered open his eyes looking up to Ace. He gave a soft giggle earning Ace's attention.
"What?"
"Your hair looks like a bird's nest."
"Oh yeah!"
Then he ruffled Sabo's hair messing it up having him grumble looking up to Ace. He stuck his tongue out at him.
"Sabo, do you remember what happened last night?" Ace asked.
"Couldn't tell you. I guess we got pretty hammered last night."
Ace chuckled, "Probably."
There was shouting outside the window. Earning Ace and Sabo's attention. They peaked out the window finding people dancing in the street and setting up for what looked to be a festival. Ace grinned and turned to Sabo.
"One more day shouldn't hurt." Ace nudged him.
"I don't know, I really should be going." Sabo said.
"Come on Sabo, you probably work hard and could use some fun."
Sabo sighed, "Why do I feel that I can't win against you."
Ace grinned, "Cause you like me."
Sabo nudged him, "Shut up."
"I have that effect on people."
Sabo turned to him, "How so?"
"I have people fallen for me all the time."
Sabo snorted a laugh having Ace purse his lips.
"Whatever you say 'Fire Fist.'" Sabo said.
Ace chuckled before tackling him to the bed. After they finished playing. Ace and Sabo got dressed and headed out to the town. Streamers, balloons, games, and rides were all being set up. A flyer fluttered into Ace's face earning Sabo's attention. He snickered taking the paper off and examining it. He smiled to the firework show.
"Fireworks, man I haven't seen those in years." Sabo said.
"Then I guess we have to see them." Ace said.
Sabo smiled, "Really?"
Ace smiled back, "Yeah, we will take the Farris wheel and watch them from up there."
They turned to the Farris wheel and smiled. Sabo put the flyer in his pocket before he removed his glove and took Ace's hand. Ace turned to him as he smiled to him.
"You were right, I'm having fun." Sabo said.
Ace smiled back, "I'm glad."
They walked around playing some games and winning little trinket toys. Before they were dragged into some festival dance. Ace and Sabo got mixed up with different dance partners before they were switched out with other partners. Until they got to each other. They grinned and started dancing around together then it got dark.
"The fireworks!" Someone called.
Sabo and Ace grinned before they went over to the Farris wheel. A man opened a door and let the two in before securing the seat and then moved the wheel so the next couple could get on. Ace and Sabo sat at the top for a while waiting for other people to get on. Sabo took off his hat placing it in his lap while Ace's hat was on his back. So, Ace being cliché. He yawned and wrapped his arm behind Sabo earning his attention.
"Your not slick I hope you know that." Sabo said.
"I dont know what your talking about." Ace said.
Ace whistled softly as Sabo smiled and scooted closer to him. He turned to Sabo who rested his head on his shoulder. That's when the first firework went off. They turned there attention to the sparkling colors or gold, white, and red. They lit up the sky as Ace rested his cheek on Sabo's head.
"Ace." Sabo said.
"Yeah?" Ace said.
"I don't want this to end."
"Me too."
Ace pulled Sabo into his side and kissed his cheek. Sabo smiled turning to Ace and cupped his cheeks. He kissed him softly as the last firework went off. They pulled back with cheesy smiles on there faces. Ace gleamed with an idea.
"Do you trust me?" Ace asked.
"Yes?" Sabo furrowed.
Ace stood up taking Sabo's hand and scooped him up. He jumped off the wheel and onto one of the beams. He then jumped over to one of the roofs and went roof jumping until they got to a forest. Ace set Sabo down and took his hand. He grinned before he lead him through the forest and then stopped before a cliff. Ace sat down and patted the spot next to him. Sabo sat down next to him as they looked to the stars and the calm sea. Ace lied down on the grass looking up at the stars and took Sabo's hand.
"What happened to the other Sabo?" Sabo asked.
"He went out to sea, then he was shot down by a celestial dragon. He left a note to watch over our little brother. So I'm looking for him." Ace said.
"Who's your brother?"
"Monkey D. Luffy, the man who will be the next pirate king." He grinned looking up at the stars.
Sabo smiled, "Do you think he will make it?"
Ace nodded, "Luffy can do anything he puts his mind to."
"What did you think of the pirate king? Gold Roger."
Ace's smile faded, "He, was something alright."
"Did you know him?"
Ace chuckled, "No. If I did, I don't know what I would of done."
Sabo hummed, "I heard he had a child, but they say they died or something."
Ace turned to him, "Yeah, I heard that too."
He turned to Ace and lied down in the grass. Ace pulled him close and kissed his forehead.
"Fire fist Ace." A voice growled.
He sat up looking to the dark figure lurking down the path. Ace chuckled getting up as Sabo sat on the grass. With one hit Ace had knocked down the bounty hunter. He chuckled turning to Sabo who clapped softly.
"We better go before we bring more company." Ace grinned.
Sabo got up as they took hands and walked back to the town. The festival was being taken down. Ace and Sabo looked around to them before getting back to the hotel. Where they both slumped against the bed and nuzzled into the comfort.
"Ace." Sabo grumbled.
"Hm?" The ravenette hummed.
"You promise you would be here when I wake up."
"Yeah, I'll be here."
Sabo turned to him brushing away his wavy hair, his chocolate eyes flicked across Ace's face. He chuckled as Sabo smiled and looked him in the eye.
"You have an odd number of freckles. Fifteen."
"Last time I checked I had thirteen."
Sabo chuckled and snuggled closer to him. Within seconds the blonde fell asleep. Ace turned to him and sighed.
"I'm sorry Sabo."
The following morning, Sabo woke up alone. He grumbled seeing none of Ace's belongings in the room. Then got up to leave, when he noticed a piece of paper sitting on the dresser. Sabo went over to it and picked it up. He unfolded it and started to read it. But. It didn't make any since. But he kept it anyway. Good thing he did too. Because. Two months later, Ace was executed and Sabo remembered everything.
He clutched the paper as tears ran down his cheeks. He fell to his knee's reading over the blood thirsty battle over the Whitebeard pirates and the marines. Only to have Whitebeard and Ace fall. Leaving behind, a ban of pirates unsure what to do, islands falling, a brother in traumatic shock, and a lover regretting not being there. Sabo watched as his tears dripped onto the paper having the ink smear. And Ace's smiling face became watered over. Koala put her hand on Sabo's shoulder but he reminded looking at the paper.
"Hey is everything okay? Is there anything I can do for you?" She asked.
Sabo turned to her and grabbed her wrist he gave a shaken breath, "In my room, sitting on my dresser, there's a folded piece of paper. Bring it to me. Please."
She nodded before dashing off, Sabo turned back to the paper and clutched it close. Maybe now, Ace's words would have more understanding. Maybe. Koala came back and handed him the paper. Which he frantically opened. His eyes watered more as he bit his lip keeping his weeping inside. Every word he read, every period, comma, and indentation. All was clear. Sabo then broke down reading the final sentence. He clutched the paper close to his heart as his forehead was pressed to the floor.
"Why didn't you say anything!?" Sabo cried.
Koala knelt down to him as he whimpered into the floor. She reached out and stroked his back.
"Who are you talking about?" She asked.
"Ace." He sniffled, "He, knew but didn't say anything."
"Knew what?"
"That we've known each other for years, then when we reunite, he didn't say anything! Not a word of it. He referred to me in the third person. When he knew, I was standing before him."
Sabo punched the floor, as Koala patted his back.
"I heard that Red Haired Shanks has taken is body to a proper burial. I can get some information about that if you want."
Sabo turned to her, "Please."
She smiled, "Of course."
It didn't take long to find the mysterious island where Portgas D. Ace and Edward Newgate had been buried. Sabo went out alone with some flowers and a bottle of good Sake. Once he arrived to the island he stood on the boat. Then he took a breath before stepping onto the island. Sabo stepped up to the beautiful colors of the hill. Many swords pierced through the grass as Sabo walked up to Ace's grave. He placed his hand on the stone before he smiled.
"Ace, you sure did get a peaceful place to rest." Sabo smiled.
He sat before the stone and looked over to Newgate's stone then turned back to Ace.
"Man, that man is pretty big. Almost as big as Kuma."
Sabo chuckled to himself before he rested back on his hands.
"When you gave me that letter, I didn't understand it then. But. Once I remembered you, and our troublesome brother Luffy. I understood what you meant. Why you left without saying goodbye. Once I leave here I'm going to find Luffy. I'll tell him where this place is, and hopefully he will come to visit you. Him and his friends."
The wind fluttered as Ace's hat shifted, Sabo smiled.
"Ace. I wish you told me. About our childhood. I wish I was there to help. I just wis there was something that I could of done. So that you would be here today. But, I'm glad you did your part to save our little brother. So. Let me do my part."
Sabo pulled out the sake and poured it into the cups and set them down on the box. He nodded taking a drink out of one before getting up.
"Oh. Here's this."
Sabo set down the newspaper about Luffy coming out of hiding and the story about punk hazard. He stepped back getting one last look of the grave.
"I love and miss you Ace." Sabo said.
As Sabo stepped away he felt a small push and a faint whisper, 'I love you too.'
