Wondering & Wandering

Our showroom appointment to choose furniture for the nursery proved to be no fun since I had heard the conversation earlier. It was only made worse by the fact that the crib, changing table and matching dresser wouldn't be ready for delivery for six to eight weeks, worrying me even more. I don't have that kind of time being seven months pregnant. I walked out still feeling completely unprepared.

Lindsey has been acting strangely the last few days. He's always on the phone, scrambling to get off when I enter the room. He eyes me, almost wondering if I had heard anything. I try to occupy myself with things around the house. The little shopping I've done, mostly clothes, I've been able to put in the closet, washed and ready for the baby. Looking at all of the tiny clothes makes this feel a lot more real. In a few months, our baby will be wear these items. I cannot wait to meet them.

Friday afternoon, Christine calls, asking to take me out to brunch on Sunday. She says it's her treat and she even has a present for the baby and I. I am so excited at the prospect of seeing my friend and happily agree. After hanging up the phone, I come to realize that Lindsey's plan is being set in motion. Christine is here to distract me from whatever Lindsey is going to be doing. I try not to let this ruin my mood and put a damper on this but I can't help but wonder what my husband is doing while I'm away. I've never had to worry before.

Saturday, Lindsey's mother invites us for dinner and the two barely speak. She keeps giving me looks across the table and it's almost too much to take. She smiles, she's kind but it's as if she knows something. Or maybe I'm just being paranoid. Lindsey loves me, I know he does and I love him but with his behavior lately, wandering off to talk to someone on the phone or meeting someone for a couple hours before I even get out of bed...

Sunday, bunch day. Lindsey kisses me awake and I smile sleepily.

"Good morning, beautiful girl."

"Morning." I sit up, propping myself up with a few thousand pillows. Okay, so maybe that's an exaggeration but having a lot of pillows around is the only way I can get comfortable lately. Lindsey thinks it's cute, I find it terribly annoying.

"How are you feeling?"

"Fat" I reply and he chuckles.

"Shh" he says, kissing me. "You're beautiful and you become more beautiful by the day."

"Thank you, Lindsey." I give him a small smile and he looks at me, through me.

"Is something wrong? Your smile doesn't quite reach your eyes. You're forcing it."

"No, I'm fine. I'm probably just tired."

"Is it me, did I do something?"

"No, you're perfect."

"I know I haven't been that present this week but I promise, you and this baby are my number one priority. I love you so much." He kisses me and I can feel that what he says is true as his lips linger on mine.

"I love you too."

"I don't want to rush you but you might want to start getting ready for Chris soon. She should be here in about an hour."

I look at the clock on the night stand. "Shit"

"Need me to help with anything." His hands begin to explore my body and he has that certain look in his eyes.

"No, because it you 'help' it will only take longer. What has gotten into you?"

"I just can't believe you're mine, that's all. I never thought I'd get this lucky to have you as my wife and the mother of my child." He kisses me again and I almost forget how worried I was before. "Get ready and I will see you downstairs."

"More calls?" I ask and his eyes go wide.

"Uh...no, just giving you space."

"Oh, okay." He leaves the room, jamming his hands in his jeans pockets. I know something is going on. Maybe I can try to get some answers from Christine.

I get up and shower, quickly doing my hair and makeup. Lindsey comes back up and asks me what I'm going to wear. I shrug.

"How about a little color?"

"Black is slimming" I reply and he gives me a look. "Are you saying it's not?"

"No, I'm just saying...how about this?"

From my closet he pulls out a long, pretty pale floral dress with mid length flutter sleeves that cinches in right under the bust. He also goes about choosing my shoes and kisses my cheek before he leaves the room again. I take his suggestion and dress as quickly as I can. I just know she's already here. I give myself the once over in the mirror again. I feel surprisingly attractive today. He made a good choice. I descend the stairs and just as I thought, Christine is standing in a white outfit in the foyer.

"Oh hello, you look lovely!" Christine praises.

"Thank you. Lindsey picked it."

"Hey, good job. Funny you can't dress yourself but you can dress your wife."

"Hardy har-har. It's easy to dress her, she looks good in everything and she's absolutely gorgeous. I think I dress myself just fine, thank you."

"Play nice you two" I say and they stick their tongues out at each other like school children.

"Alright, well, grab your bag, love and we can head off." I nod and go to the hall closet to get my purse, making sure I have everything I need. The two of them walk down the hall a little but I can hear murmurings here and there.

"So I just take her out to brunch and make sure she's back by..."

"Three."

"Right." Christine nods, looking at me then walking farther down the hall. Instantly, I feel like something's wrong.

"I will call the restaurant if I have to stall."

"Great. Do you think she knows?"

"I'm starting to think she's catching on. I don't want her to find out a thing. I don't need her stressing out, not right now."

"It will be over soon though, all out in the open. Today is the last day you have to hide."

"I know, I know. She's acting really weird, distant."

"Well, you're making it so obvious. Running off all the time. You don't know what subtlety is, do you?"

"Apparently it's not my strong suit." He looks at me too then waves awkwardly. I wave back, then he turns his back to me, saying something to Christine.

"Alright, love, so we're ready?" Christine asks.

"Yes, ready as I'll ever be." I look at Lindsey and he hurries over to me, giving me a peck on the lips. "Be a good boy while I'm gone" I tell him and though it's a joke, I mean it. Something is definitely going on and Christine knows about it.

"I will, mom." he jokes back. I kiss him again and give him a look which makes him break eye contact and shove his hands back into the pockets of his jeans.

"I love you"

"I love you too" I hear as he closes the door and I leave for brunch with Christine.
