It's true. I've never heard of one legend who's had an easy life. 

Let's take Anne Frank she's a legend. She went through absolute hell! Yet she is a legend. Albeit she didn't live to see it.

There's Rachel joy Scott. Look at what happened to her in her childhood. Yet she albeit is not a well know legend. She looked death in the barrel and still stood by her faith when I know a few Christians who wouldn't.

Big Bad John is another one.
